Online courses provide the flexibility of time and location for both students and educators. From an administration viewpoint, online courses do not require physical classrooms, hence they require less university resources; as such, online courses are often seen as cash cows. Unfortunately, in some cases online courses are still considered second-t...

Amongst these dimensions, we place the ideas of help, difficulty and communication, which is used with the students. One class by Silvia (a secondary teacher) is analyzed in detail in order...

Class attendance is a key consideration when assigning final marks for courses taught, student attendance is a critical issue for higher institutions. Some institutions choose to regulate attendance with paper sheets, while others prefer to verify students' attendance with paper sheets and then manually enter this information into a computer. This mode of taking students attendance delays time and reduces the time needed for the lecture to be delivered. A system that eases the burden of time delay in taking attendance, promotes the universities, and supports parents is presented in this paper. The radio frequency identification and detection (RFID) student monitoring system has been developed to track student’s attendance in the classroom using passive RFID technology. The system uses an RFID reader and a contactless smart card to ensure time management during student’s attendance. A reader at a fixed place delivers a signal to a passive RFID chip for detection and identifies a huge number of chips in a short amount of time. The biometric thumb detection module for security was applied to improve the system. The applied enhanced technology sends a message to the parent of any students that fails to attend lectures.

[70] also designed a biometric-based attendance system for course lecture using a student fingerprint identification method. The system produced approximately 3.8 seconds execution time on the average, while the manual method produced approximately 17.8 seconds execution time on the average. ...

Academic performance of students in most places around the world is determined by their presence in the classroom. Lecture attendance control at a university is a traditional process in which student engagement in classes is fostered by means of an institutional policy. In a conventional way, professors have employed different techniques to monitor the influx of students in the classroom, as well as their punctuality and history log. Nevertheless, conventional (paper-based) and modern attendance registration approaches (some using worksheets and computational information systems) often lack either promptness, non-impersonation ability, simplicity, reliability, effectiveness, scalability, acceptance, mobility, or affordability. The aim of this paper is to present a new proposal based on a common fingerprint process and in a new speaker recognition configuration by using a Raspberry system for student attendance administration purposes in order to provide most of these advantages. Thus, the propounded scheme uses ordinary fingerprint verification (a binarized 8-bit grayscale image processing) and speech recognition in the task of text-independent closed-set speaker identification using convolutional neural networks by means of previous enrollment and training process using as input a new approach of spectrograms images configuration. The presented system obtained an accuracy of 97.5% and 97.49% for the fingerprint and speech-based task respectively. These results are comparable with the corresponding state-of-the-art environments. The main findings obtained show a flexible structure with growth capacity, dynamism and prompt response due to the set of user assistance reports and the student control techniques.

Attendance Management System (AMS) is the easiest way to keep track of students' attendance for lecture classes, for day-today monitoring of attendance and student examination eligibility. In this Paper, we propose a Multimodal Biometric-based Student Attendance Ssystem for course lectures. The proposed system takes students attendance during lecture periods automatically using student authentication, identification and verification method. Efforts in this work recorded 94% success rate forten students who participated in the study. The manual attendance system average execution time for ten students was 17.83 seconds it was 3.79 seconds [1] for the unimodal biometrics automatic attendance management system while it was 4.80seconds for the proposed Asynchronous Multimodal biometrics automatic attendance management system, with 94% increase in efficiency as compared with the unimodal system. The Fingerprint is used to verify the student while herPIN is used to identify, authenticateand update the Student attendance in the database.

Attendance documentation is a crucial metric for determining a student's dedication, qualification, and status. Several types of systems have been developed for automated attendance. The majority of these implementations were built on a single factor template, representing a line of security error. In recent years, rapid development has taken place in several applications such as authorization, data access, and access control by implementing biometrics and radio frequency identification technologies. This research work focuses on designing a smart protocol for RFID authentication in combination with fingerprint biometric information, which guarantees confidentiality, identity verification, and data protection. Reaction time and event performance evaluation were the tests performed on the system. Ten students with unique fingerprints and RFID cards are assessed for the test. The test results show an average duration of 20.61 respective seconds for each student, and zero percent of false refusal rate was recorded in the implementation. Finally, the result shows the system is reliable and efficient. Each result revealed high-speed performance due to software and hardware coordination. Biometric systems provided data integrity and security, RFID provided limited complexity, and the proposed method's technical programming pattern provided an average run time.

This effort presents a developed attendance register module for a smart academic institution. A convenient test on four courses was carried out on the register module for courses A, B, C, and D for five lecture days. A total of twenty students were involved in the test. This module is a careful improvement of the previous SAMSYS module. Manual authentication of attendance of log books have become an arduous task and are also time consuming. The academic attendance policy has continually insisted on the 70/30 % benchmark which has also generated a lot of questions at various quarters. This improvement provides for instant print out of attendance after class lectures and after examination periods. In the design, the PIC18F462 microcontroller has been used to achieve adequate results. Also, the PIC16F88 was used for the keyboard decoder to convert scan codes to ASCII character for the microcontroller. Adequate attendance security measures have also been put in place for effective attendance management. The design presented here showed better performance over the previous design.

Taking students attendance in higher institutions using the paper based method is a difficult task especially when the number of students are much. In view of this, an embedded fingerprint based attendance system has become inexpedient to make the job easier and efficient. Attendance management system was developed using Arduino 1.8.7 IDE, C# programming language, PHP Scripting, MySQL database and SFGDemo software, and was tested using electronic fingerprint scanner which was connected to a computer system for verifying student identity. The fingerprint of the students of Ondo State University of Science and Technology Okitipupa, Nigeria were captured during the 2017/2018 academic session. The system comprises of five different modules which includes the fingerprint capture, fingerprint processing (enrollment or authentication), pattern matching, microcontroller, GSM modem and database. The fingerprint method uses distinct finger features to identify individuals. When this system was compared with the manual method, the result shows that the average time taken per student using an embedded fingerprint-based attendance management system using microcontroller and manual attendance register were 6.57 and 19.17 seconds respectively. The embedded fingerprint based system proved to be more efficient, secure and durable when compared to the manual paper based method.

QRdice is a web based tool that allows educators and course creators to quickly create learning quizzes for any learning module and level of students. Various question types such as multiple- choice questions, true or false, match-the-following, and fill-in-the-blanks can be created and stored in the question bank. Imitating the dice games concept, the students need to toss the QRdice, scan the QR Code on the dice by using the smart phone and answer the random quiz question appearing on the phone screen. A live scoreboard is available to motivate student to achieve high scores during the quiz games session.
