This study demonstrates the power of DNA barcoding to detect overlooked and newly arrived taxa. Sixty-three species of Coleoptera representing 25 families are studied based on DNA barcode data and morphological analysis of the barcoded specimens. Three of the species involve synonymies or previous taxonomic confusion in North America, while the first Canadian records are published for 60 species. Forty-two species are adventive in North America, and 40 of these adventive species originate from the Palaearctic region. Three genera are recorded from the Nearctic region for the first time: Coelostoma Brullé, 1835 (Hydrophilidae), Scydmoraphes Reitter, 1891 (Staphylinidae), and Lythraria Bedel, 1897 (Chrysomelidae). Two new synonymies are established: Mycetoporus triangulatus Campbell, 1991 (Staphylinidae) is a junior synonym of Mycetoporus reichei Pandellé, 1869, syn. nov. while Bledius philadelphicus Fall, 1919 (Staphyli-nidae) is a junior synonym of Bledius gallicus (Gravenhorst, 1806), syn. nov. The previously suggested move of Ctenicera tigrina (Fall, 1901) to the genus Pseudanostirus Dolin, 1964 (Elateridae) is formalized, resulting in Pseudanostirus tigrinus (Fall, 1901), comb. nov.

This paper treats 134 new records of Coleoptera for the province of New Brunswick, Canada from the following 41 families: Gyrinidae, Carabidae, Dytiscidae, Histeridae, Leiodidae, Scarabaeidae, Scirtidae, Buprestidae, Elmidae, Limnichidae, Heteroceridae, Ptilodactylidae, Eucnemidae, Throscidae, Elateridae, Lampyridae, Cantharidae, Dermestidae, Bostrichidae, Ptinidae, Cleridae, Melyridae, Monotomidae, Cryptophagidae, Silvanidae, Laemophloeidae, Nitidulidae, Endomychidae, Coccinellidae, Corylophidae, Latridiidae, Tetratomidae, Melandryidae, Mordellidae, Tenebrionidae, Mycteridae, Pyrochroidae, Aderidae, Scraptiidae, Megalopodidae, and Chrysomelidae. Among these, the following four species are newly recorded from Canada: Dirrhagofarsus ernae Otto, Muona & McClarin (Eucnemidae), Athous equestris (LeConte) (Elateridae), Ernobius opicus Fall (Ptinidae), and Stelidota coenosa Erichson (Nitidulidae). The Family Limnichidae is newly reported for New Brunswick, and one species is added to the fauna of Nova Scotia. Lindgren funnel traps provided specimens for 104 (78%) of the species and were the sole source of specimens for 89 (66%) of the species reported here, suggesting they are a very useful tool for sampling Coleoptera fauna in the forests of New Brunswick.

The aim of this study is the quantitative assessment of temporal variations in the composition and structure of a nocturnal flying beetle community in northeastern North America. In southern Québec (Canada), we collected by blacklight trapping a total of 33,382 individuals representing 625 Coleoptera species or morphospecies belonging to 63 families from a grassland at Scotstown during six years (2007–2012). Carabidae and Staphylinidae were the most abundant families and had the highest species richness. This blacklight trapping throughout the April–September period over many years provides critical information for assessments of beetle diversity in southern Québec, based on 1) the large proportion of species collected in small numbers (1–2 adults), 2) nearly 60% of species flying for only 1–3 months over six years, and 3) the large proportion of dominant/subdominant species in spite of strong year-to-year fluctuations in the relative abundance of species. Consequently, light trapping investigations in the future should be extended across many years to improve the inventory of species in a region, aid in the evaluation of the rarity of some Nearctic species, and study long-term effects of certain environmental factors (e.g., anthropogenic disturbance, climatic changes). We also studied the seasonal flight pattern for the 57 most abundant species (at least 100 individuals) including two eudominant species, Bembidion versicolor (LeConte) (Carabidae) (7.5% of the total catches) and Ectopria nervosa (Melsheimer) (Psephenidae) (6.8%); the flight peak of many species was during mid-summer. We determined the sex ratio for 23 abundant species; 12 species presented a female-biased sex ratio.
