Polyporus has traditionally been treated at a generic status, but currently, it is considered as a polyphyletic assemblage of some poroid stipitate genera and morphological groups of fungi to be better understood. Ten species of Polyporus sensu lato and one species of Echinochaete (Polyporales, Basidiomycota) were identified to the region of Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul State, southern Brazil. Fresh basidiomes were collected and analyzed in order to present their illustrated morphological redescriptions. Polyporus subpurpurascens is recorded for the first time from Brazil.
... COMMENTS: This species is recognized by the scaly pileus surface, ciliate margin, yellowish to brown, centrally stipitate basidiomata, and the large, hexagonal pores (1–2 per mm). According with Louza & Gugliotta (2007), the ciliate margin and the eschweizerbart_xxx scaly pileus surface are variable characteristics. Polyporus arcularius is similar to P. tricholoma, but the colour of the basidiomata (pale brown and white to cream, respectively), pores size (1–2 per mm and 4–6 per mm, respectively) and stipe morphology (velutine and glabrous, respectively) distinguish these species. ...

In the last decades, several phylogenetic studies have shown that Polyporus is polyphyletic; accordingly, several genera have been newly described or reinstated. Nevertheless, the phylogenetic position of many species in the genus remains highly contentious, particularly those traditionally included in the Polyporus infrageneric group Polyporus s.s., i.e.,P. austroafricanus, P. craterellus, P. radicatus, P. squamosus, P. tuberaster, andP. udus. Recently, based on morphological characteristics, P. udus, described from Indonesia, was synonymized with Bresadolia paradoxa, described from Paraguay, resurrecting Bresadolia as a good genus. In this study, the phylogenetic relationship of P. udus and its purported taxonomic synonym in South America was investigated.Inaddition,thephylogeneticpositioningofBresadoliawithinPolyporuss.l.andrelatedgenerawasassessed,based onITSandnLSUrDNAloci.MorphologicalrevisionofcollectionsfromtheAtlanticForestofArgentina,Brazil, andParaguay; revision of type specimens; and the phylogenetic results showed that B. paradoxa and P. udus are not conspecific. Both species form independent lineages that cluster together within a monophyletic genus recognized here as Bresadolia. In this study, a complete description of B. paradoxa incorporating data of type specimens previously overlooked and characters from sequenced fresh specimens is provided, as well as comments on all species described or combined in Bresadolia.
