Hydnopolyporus fimbriatus is a species of mushroom of the Meripilaceae Jülich family found in some regions of Central and South America. This study aimed to evaluate the qualitative phytochemical composition, the antioxidant activity in the reduction of DPPH and hydroxyl free radicals and to determine the flavonoid contents and total phenolics in the ethanolic extract of the mushroom H. fimbriatus. The ethanolic extract was prepared and lyophilized. Qualitative phytochemical prospection assays were performed for different groups of organic compounds. The antioxidant assay was carried out in the reduction of the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhy-drazyl free radical and in the reduction of the hydroxyl free radical by colorimetric methods. The ethanolic extract of H. fimbriatus positively exhibited several phytochemical groups, moderate antioxidant activity in reducing free radical DPPH 101.09 µ mL-1, high hydroxyl radical reducing activity 87.51% and potential total phenolic content 20.15 mg GAE 100 g-1 of dry extract. Flavonoids content was not observed possibly due to the colorimetric method using aluminum chloride. With these results, it was possible to characterize the ethanolic extract of the vegetative part of Hydnopolyporus fimbriatus. New studies should be carried out in an attempt to develop a quantitative method of total flavonoids as well as test the extract in other biological models, thus being able to develop new drugs or products for agricultural use.

White root disease is a significant disease of cashew in Indonesia. However, the identity of the causal agent of the disease remains unclear. The objective of the research was to determine the pathogen causing cashew white root disease. Procedures undertaken in this research were (1) field observation in cashew plantations in Karangasem, Bali; (2) isolation and characterization of the suspected fungus and (3) Koch’s postulate on cashew saplings in the greenhouse. Field observation showed that white root disease occurs in cashew plantations with trees prevalently at the age of 8-23 years, with the primary symptom wilting and the presence of rhizomorph on the basal stem. Morphologically, Rigidoporus sp. fungus was consistently isolated from the root of infected plants. An artificial inoculation on nine-month-old saplings showed that wilting symptoms and the presence of rhizomorph on the basal stem developed at 51-76 days after inoculation. The inoculated saplings finally died. Root colonization by Rigidoporus sp. ranged from 35-90%. Rigidoporus sp. as the causal agent of white root disease of cashew was confirmed.

Hydnopolyporus fimbriatus is a lignicolous fungus reported in Colombia for the first and last time in 1930 for the department of Valle del Cauca. During the collection at the campus of Universidad Nacional de Colombia, in Bogotá, the presence of the species was recorded with which its distribution for the department of Cundinamarca expands. During the revision of the Antrodia species from the Atlantic Forest in southern Brazil, some specimens collected on dead branches of Baccharis (Asteraceae) were found to represent an undescribed species,Antrodia neotropica sp. nov. Morphologically, this new species is characterized by resupinate to effused-reflexed basidiomata with a cream to brown pore surface,a dimitic hyphal system and basidiospores that are cylindrical to subcylindrical,in dorsi-ventral view with an obovoid aspect, and from the side-view present a sigmoid ventral side. Molecular phylogeny inferred from nrITS and nrLSU sequence data confirmed that this species belongs to the Antrodia s.s. clade, closely related to European and North American species,A. serpens and A. heteromorpha. Its relationships within Antrodia s.s. as well as biological and morphological characters of Antrodia s.s. are discussed.
