Objectives: This study evaluated the bone quality of the maxilla and mandible by using the classification proposed by Lekholm and Zarb (L & Z) and histomorphometry. Methods: Sixty edentulous areas were evaluated. The classification by L & Z was obtained through the evaluation of periapical and panoramic radiographs associated with the surgeon's tactile perception during milling and implant installation. Before implant installation, bone biopsies of standardized sizes were performed for histological evaluation. Results: Type III bone quality was more frequent in the posterior (73.33%) and anterior (73.33%) maxilla, whereas type II bone quality was more frequent in the posterior (53.33%) and anterior (60.00%) mandible. Through histometry, statistical difference was observed for the amount of bone tissue of the posterior region of the maxilla in relation to the anterior and posterior regions of the mandible (P ≤ 0.043). However, there was no difference in osteocyte counts between alveolar regions (P = 0.2946). In the female gender, the age showed a low positive correlation with the L & Z classification (rho = 0.398; P = 0.006) and in the male gender, a moderate negative correlation was observed (rho = -0.650, P = 0.016). Conclusions: Both methods detected differences in the bone quality of the alveolar regions of the maxilla/mandible and that the classification by L & Z is a reliable method, since it was consistent with histomorphometry, considered the "gold standard" method for the evaluation of bone quality and greater bone density was observed in older men.

Objectives Metoprolol is a cardioselective competitive beta-1 adrenergic receptor antagonist with antihypertensive properties, devoid of intrinsic sympathomimetic activity. Various studies have suggested the effect of beta-blockers on bone remodeling. We aimed to investigate whether metoprolol affects bone remodeling by altering anti-inflammatory and pro-inflammatory cytokines. Materials and methods Surgical defects of 3 mm diameter were created in tibiae of 72 Sprague-Dawley rats. Rats were randomly assigned to a control group without metoprolol treatment (n = 36), and a test group treated with 0.1 mg/kg/day metoprolol (n = 36). Six rats from each group were sacrificed at days 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, and 14. The percentages of cells, which showed positive immunohistochemical staining for IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, and RANKL, were assessed in the defect area. Differences in percentages of stained cells within each of the test and control groups over various time intervals were tested using one-way ANOVA test. A P value of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results No significant differences in IL-1β, IL-10, IL-6, and RANKL expressions were found between test and control groups at the same interval. Significant reduction was observed at different time intervals in the same group (P < 0.05). Conclusion Metoprolol did not reduce bone-active cytokine: IL-1β, IL-6, and RANKL. It also did not elevate IL-10 expression levels. Thus, it does not appear to decrease osteoclastogenesis. Clinical relevance Results from this animal model help us understand any effect of metoprolol on bone healing by potential contribution to different real-world clinical research.

The aim of this study was to monitor the changes of viscoelastic properties at bone-implant interface via resonance frequency analysis (RFA) and the Periotest device during the healing process in an experimental rabbit model. Twenty-four dental implants were inserted into the femoral condyles of rabbits. The animals were sacrificed immediately after implant installation or on day 14, 28, or 56 after surgery. Viscoelastic properties at bone-implant interface were evaluated by measuring the implant stability quotient (ISQ) using RFA and by measuring the Periotest values (PTVs) using the Periotest device. The bone/implant specimens were evaluated histopathologically and histomorphometrically to determine the degree of osseointegration (BIC%). The BIC% values at different time points were then compared with the corresponding ISQ values and PTVs. The mean ISQ value increased gradually and reached 81±1.7 on day 56, whereas the mean PTV decreased over time, finally reaching − 0.7±0.5 on day 56. Significant correlations were found between ISQ and BIC% ( r=0.701 , p<0.001 ), PTV and BIC% ( r=-0.637 , p<0.05 ), and ISQ and PTV ( r=-0.68 , p<0.05 ). These results show that there is a positive correlation between implant stability parameters and peri-implant-bone healing, indicating that the RFA and Periotest are useful for measuring changes of viscoelastic properties at bone-implant interface and are reliable for indirectly predicting the degree of osseointegration.

BACKGROUND: There is a need for studying bone characteristics systematically for a better understanding of planning (i.e., timing of placement and loading) and outcomes of implant therapy. Therefore, the aim of the present review is to evaluate alveolar bone microarchitecture and its modifiers. METHODS: Two independent reviewers conducted electronic and manual literature searches in several databases, including MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Cochrane Oral Health Group Trials Register, for articles published up to February 2015 reporting alveolar bone microstructure. The random-effect model was applied to calculate the weighted mean (WM) of total bone volume (TBV), which has a range from 0 to 1. TBV was stratified by anatomic locations, atrophic status, and types of specimens. Correlations between TBV and other bone-related parameters were also analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 800 articles were initially identified. After abstract/full-text review, 24 articles were included in the systematic review, of which 23 were also included in the quantitative analysis. The WM TBV was 0.365 (95% confidence interval = 0.278 to 0.452), higher in the maxillary/mandibular anterior sites than the maxillary/mandibular posterior sites. However, great variations existed within each anatomic location. Additionally, WM TBV was lower in atrophic sites than non-atrophic sites. TBV was correlated negatively with trabecular spacing (R(2) = 0.11). CONCLUSIONS: The present systematic review suggests that the TBV might not be different between the defined anatomic locations. However, the atrophy status might influence TBV.

Introduction Digitalization has revolutionized dentistry in the last decade. Current application in digitization has increased which includes use of various systems such as cone-beam computed tomography for implant purpose, temporomandibular joint disease diagnosis, utilization of computer-aided design–computer-aided manufacturing system (CAD-CAM system) for prosthodontics. The usage of digital dentistry is made right from diagnosis to treatment planning which reduces the time consumption & human efforts to a great extent & increases accuracy for treatment planning. Therefore, this review focuses on analysis of implementation of digitization in dentistry from 2011 to 2021. Objectives This study aims to analyze the scientific literature on digitization in dentistry by examining the origin of manuscripts, study types, and levels of evidence. Materials and Methods The study retrieved data from journals indexed in Scopus. Subsequently, a descriptive analysis was conducted on bibliographic data, collaboration network, and keyword co-occurrence. The articles were then classified based on their field of interest, main research question, study type, and level of evidence. Results The study has identified 203 original papers on digital dentistry, published in 112 journals, and co-authored by 1436 individuals affiliated with 89 institutions from 45 countries. While the majority (81.4%) of these papers were from a single country, we observed high collaboration among institutions from the United States, Britain, and Brazil. The primary focus of these papers was on the potential uses of digital technology in dentistry. Regarding study type, most articles were systematic reviews, cross-sectional studies, and original research papers. Conclusion Integrating digital technology in dentistry has brought numerous benefits, including a more organized and streamlined approach to medical records and thorough investigation and treatment planning within a shorter timeframe. Furthermore, digital technology enables the accurate detection of even the minutest details, minimizing errors and eliminating human bias. The use of three-dimensional imaging techniques allows for the precise determination of objects’ geometrical characteristics and spatial orientation, resulting in the accurate placement of implants and prosthetics. Clinical Relevance Digitization in dentistry has opened a whole new world for practitioners to focus on the patient satisfaction approach. Digital platforms can help optimize diagnosis and consulting and provide an excellent base for treatment planning.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the influence of different frontal bone defect localizations on primary stability values of 2 different implant designs. Materials and methods: Eight cow rib segments were prepared before implant installation, as 2 segments with coronal, 2 with middle, and 2 with apical defects and 2 with control. Thirty-two cylindrical and 32 tapered implants were placed in the remaining 4 segments. Implant stability measurements were performed using electronic percussive testing and resonance frequency analysis. Results: No significance was detected between the stability values of the 2 implant designs except the implant stability quotient (ISQ) of control groups. The tapered implants control group showed significantly higher lateral ISQs compared with cylindrical implants (P = 0.033). For both implant types, stability values were significantly lower in coronal defects (P < 0.01). No significant differences were detected in other defect types. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, it may be concluded that coronal defects may influence primary stability negatively, compared with middle and apical defects. Although statistically not significant, coronal defects caused lower primary stability values with the tapered design compared with parallel design.

The aim of this study was to review the literature on factors that may affect dental implant stability as measured with the Ostell mentor device. A systematic search of the literature was performed in Pubmed, Scopus, and Cochrane databases using dental implants, stability, and resonance frequency analysis as key words. The most relevant randomized controlled trials and clinical trials (n = 39) were selected from among 264 articles. Many factors can affect dental implant stability as measured with the Ostell mentor device. This may be a useful instrument for deciding the timing of implant loading, but additional research is required to establish the reliability and predictability of resonance frequency analysis for the future osseointegration of dental implants, which remains controversial.
