Polypropylene (PP) was melt blended with Vectra B-950 [a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP)], in a single screw extruder in presence of different doses of ethylene acrylic acid (EAA) copolymer, as modifier. The effect of incorporation in different proportions of EAA at a fixed dose of 5% LCP, on mechanical, thermal, morphological, and rh...

... spectra of PP, LCP (Vectra-B950) and the blends of PP-LCP (VectraB950), PP-EAA and PP- EAA-Vectra-B950 are shown in Figure 4. PP shows its characteristic absorption peaks for the deforma- tion vibration of methyl (ACH 3 ) and methylene (ACH 2 A) groups at 1473 cm À1 and 1382 cm À1 , respectively, 24 and they get much subdued and shift to somewhat lower frequency regions, at 1453 cm À1 and 1370 cm À1 , respectively, in the PP-EAA-Vectra- B950 blends as a result of structural modification. ...

The aim of this work was to verify the influence of graphite on the flammability of ureaurethane elastomers (PURM). Expandable graphite (EG) fillers were added to PURM to improve its thermal stability and reduce its flammability. Three types of elastomers were compared: unmodified PURM and PURM with the addition of two types of expandable graphite...

... [AQ4] [19][20][21] East et al. have tried to improve the processability of HNA/TA/AAP by introducing more nonlinear monomer HNA (up to 85 mol%), but the resulting polymers show an even higher melting temperature (T K-N ¼ 385 C). This can be explained by the fact that a too high molar percentage of HNA leads to the formation of intractable homopolymer of HNA (poly-HNA). ...

We have synthesized and characterized a new family of nematic all-aromatic polyesteramide thermosets based on 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (HNA), terephthalic acid (TA), and 4-acetamidophenol (AAP). In order to incorporate a high concentration of the amide-based monomer (AAP), the melt transition (TK-N) and melt viscosity had to be lowered in order to maintain melt processable intermediates. Precursor thermoplastic reactive oligomers, end-capped with phenylethynyl functionalities, were prepared using standard melt condensation techniques with a target Mn of 1000–9000 g mol⁻¹. The reactive oligomers with 20–30 mol% AAP could easily be processed into films, and the films exhibit good tensile properties in terms of tensile strength (70–80 MPa) and elongation at break (7–10%). A glass transition of 191°C could be obtained when a 1000 g mol⁻¹ oligomer (HNA/TA/AAP(20)–1 K) was thermally cross-linked. When the AAP concentration reaches 35 mol%, the rigidity of the backbone and the hydrogen bonding interactions are enhanced, which make HNA/TA/AAP(35) polymers difficult to process.

A commercial liquid crystalline polymer(LCP) was used to blend with polypropylene(PP), and a PP-g-MAH was used to improve the compatibilization of PP and LCP. The structure-properties of PP/LCP and PP/LCP/PP-g-MAH composites were studied with DSC and SEM. The results showed that the addition of a little LCP is beneficial for strengthening and reinforcing PP/LCP blends. Compared with pure PP, the impact strength and tensile strength of PP/LCP(100/10) is increased by 21.3% and 5.4%, respectively. With the addition of LCP, the melt temperature of PP component is increased while its crystallinity decreased. Compared with PP/LCP(100/10) blend, the addition of PP-g-MAH, increases the tensile strength and impact strength of PP/LCP/PP-g-MAH(100/10/3) blend. SEM photos showed that, with the addition of LCP component the preferred orientation structure is formed for PP/LCP blends, and the preferred orientation of LCP microfiber is formed with the addition of PP-g-MAH, which are beneficial for enhancing article's over-all properties.

This work aimed to study, for the first time, the melt blending of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and ethylene acrylic acid (EAA) copolymer by a novel vane extruder to toughen PLA. The phase morphologies, mechanical, and rheological properties of the PLA/EAA blends of three weight ratios (90/10, 80/20, and 70/30) were investigated. The results showed that the addition of EAA improves the toughness of PLA at the expense of the tensile strength to a certain degree and leads the transition from brittle fracture of PLA into ductile fracture. The 80/20 (w/w) PLA/EAA blend presents the maximum elongation at break (13.93%) and impact strength (3.18 kJ/m2), which is 2.2 and 1.2 times as large as those of PLA, respectively. The 90/10 and 80/20 PLA/EAA blends exhibit droplet-matrix morphologies with number average radii of 0.30–0.73 μm, whereas the 70/30 PLA/EAA blend presents an elongated co-continuous structure with large radius (2.61 μm) of EAA phase and there exists PLA droplets in EAA phase. These three blends with different phase morphologies display different characteristic linear viscoelastic properties in the low frequency region, which were investigated in terms of their complex viscosity, storage modulus, loss tangent, and Cole-Cole plots. Specially, the 80/20 PLA/EAA blend presents two circular arcs on its Cole-Cole plot. So, the longest relaxation time of the 80/20 blend was obtained from its complex viscosity imaginary part plot, and the interfacial tension between PLA and EAA, which is 4.4 mN/m, was calculated using the Palierne model. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
