Subtractive machining is required for laser cladded coatings to improve surface quality. However, cutting force performs distinctively due to the coarse profile and structural properties of the laser cladded coatings. The coarse profile of the laser cladded coatings resulted in variable depth of cut in rough turning, while the vibration caused the...

Large-area high-quality thick Al coating is one of the most important factor which always acts as a ruling substrate in realizing high-performance large-size echelle grating ruling process. Based on our previous work, we proposed use of precise mechanical polishing methods to further reduce surface roughness of thick Al films. Surface roughness Rq...

Optic processing advances have shifted system limitations, with current constraints consisting of antireflective (AR) coatings applied to optics and the inability to reduce size, weight, and price. Metasurfaces, and more broadly metaoptics, provide an avenue to overcome these limitations. The ability to generate substrate‐engraved metasurfaces that...

Extreme-high-speed laser cladding (EHLA), as a novel surface treatment technique, has attracted great attention because of its high cladding rate and good performance of cladding coatings. However, when depositing coatings with high cracking susceptibility, such as Ni60 coatings, cracks are difficult to avoid. Therefore, an extreme-high-speed laser...

... Cutting force characteristics in laser-coated remanufactured turning were investigated. Uneven contours tend to lead to tool breakage during rough turning, while cutting vibration has a significant effect on the radial force component during finishing turning [10]. The anti-friction properties of the bionic microstructure rake surface tools were investigated in dry cutting of Ti6Al4V. ...

In the manufacturing industry, many studies have been conducted on the features of cutting force, temperature and chip that are directly related to tool wear and cutting performance. However, most of the leading investigations have focused on unidirectional cutting and relatively few on multidirectional turning. This study proposes a new approach of forward-and-reverse multidirectional turning (MDT) to overcome deficiencies of tool wear, low processing efficiency and chip breakage using conventional turning. The mechanism and fundamentals of MDT are illustrated through dynamics analysis. A thermomechanical coupling simulation model is established in ABAQUS to analyze the mechanical properties of MDT. Three machining schemes are created with tool cutting edge angles as variables, and the optimal machining scheme is selected by analyzing features of cutting force, temperature, stress and chip morphology. Furthermore, the smaller-the-better characteristic of Taguchi's method and signal-to-noise ratio are used to analyze the effect of cutting parameters on the MDT performance. Finally, a case study illustrates practicability of the proposed approach is verified by the experimental studies.
