Highway passenger transport based express parcel service (HPTB-EPS) is an emerging business that uses unutilised room of coach trunk to ship parcels between major cities. While it is reaping more and more express market, the managers are facing difficult decisions to design the service network. This paper investigates the HPTB-EPS network design pr...

... Another model that incorporates direct shipment is presented in [17], which uses an e cient metaheuristic to solve the model proposed in [18]. In [19], a mixed network is introduced to take advantage of the economies of scale of intermodal transport and short travel times of direct shipments. ...

Hub location problems (HLPs) support decision making on multimodal transport strategic planning. It is related to the location of hubs and the allocation of origin/destination (O/D) flow in a system. Classical formulations assume that these flows are predefined paths and direct delivery is not available. This applied research presents a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model for a capacitated multimodal, multi-commodity HLP. Furthermore, an application on the export process in a Latin American country is detailed. The new proposed model, unlike the traditional HLP, allows direct shipment, and its O/D flows are part of the decision model. Situations with up to 100 nodes, six products, and two transport modes are used, working with initial and projected flows. All instances can be solved optimally using the commercial solver, Gurobi 7.5.0, in computational times less than a minute. Results indicate that only one hub is profitable for the case study, both for the initial and projected scenarios. The installation of a hub generates transport savings over 1% per year. Two factors affect the location decision: low concentration and distance between the hubs and destinations. Long distances involve an exhaustive use of trains instead of trucks, which leads to lower transport cost per unit.

Freight transport based on public transport is an indication of integration of passenger and freight transportation. Relative problem and practical applications of freight transport based on public transit were studied and four operating modes of freight transport by rail were summarized in this paper. Additionally, parcel transport capacity of a single subway line in different modes and parcels demand in main urban areas were estimated. For freight transport through subway network, the appropriate operating modes of freight transport under three different demand scenarios were analyzed as well, and corresponding environmental benefits under these three modes were evaluated separately. The result shows that using the subway to transport goods can efficiently reduce carbon emissions by 20–50%. Furthermore, when the demand is low and dispersed, the trolley and roller container can be used to load the goods. When the demand is relatively high or when dispersed demand can be merged, the single freight train or mixed train with passengers and freight in different carriages need to be used.

Transportation Network Design Problem (TNDP) includes making the right choices possible when deciding a collection of design criteria to develop a current transportation network in response to rising traffic demand. Traffic congestion, higher maintenance and fuel prices, delays, accidents, and air emissions stem from the general rise in flow volume. Because of the NP-hard nature of this problem, a hidden Markov model and an Equilibrium Optimizer (EO) are employed in this paper to solve it. Each particle (solution) behaves as a search agent in EO, with its position. To reach the equilibrium condition, the search agents change their focus at random regarding the best-so-far approaches, including equilibrium candidates. A well-defined "generation rate" concept has been shown to elevate EO's capacity in avoiding local minima. This article provides a new method to lower the feasible travel time and the public travel cost using the hidden Markov model and EO algorithm. The suggested method's performance was compared to the performance of other algorithms on a test network. The related numerical outcomes show that it is more effective.

Traffic congestion, dominated by private mobility, reveals not only negative impacts on road safety and the environment, but also on community cohesion. With the global COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2COVID-19 (COVID-19) epidemic, there is an urgent need for social isolation and the use of individual private transport as per the approved health guidelines. Urban transport, especially public transportation (PT), is among the primary sectors affected due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, novel alternatives for competitive PT services still have to be provided to remain meeting the socio-economic and ecological PT challenges. In this respect, sharing PT vehicles carrying passengers (shared freight-PT) could exploit a significant residual capacity as absorptive capacity is actually reduced. However, such use is based on a large-scale mutualization. The idea of integrating freight in passenger transit networks could be efficient within a Physical Internet (PI or π) framework for improving system monitoring, operational performance and, user comfort. This paper explores the major trends in the theory and practice of shared transport systems, in terms of passengers and freight, and suggests a PI conceptual framework to check if we could promote such logistics. In exploring the PI approach, a number of proposals appear providing answers and advance researches towards shared freight-PT.
