Psychosexual therapy has undergone numerous developments since the introduction of behavioural therapy for sexual difficulties by Masters and Johnson in the 1960s. We argue that theory and practice from Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) offers a novel and relevant development to existing approaches to psychosexual theory and practice. CFT presents a...

... above, the theory would argue that the Drive system would potentially be activated once the Threat system is less active. A new brain-old brain loop can also be used to illustrate how worries of future pain, memories of previous pain and the inner sex-critic contribute together to activate the Threat system, which impacts on pain sensations (see Figure 4). Alongside the standard psychosexual interventions, compassion-based interventions of challenging self-criticism and shame, understanding the role and function sex might have at different times in life, in addition to fostering self-compassion may be useful. ...

... Anecdotally, mindfulness and sensate focus have been discussed in reducing symptoms of anodyspareunia in regard to relaxation. More generally, mindful compassion activities are gaining popularity in health care in the United Kingdom and the United States as they target anxiety and improve well-being and self-acceptance with compassion (Vosper et al., 2021). Mindful compassion consists of using mindfulness, humanity, and self-kindness to attend to the inner critical voice (Neff, 2003). ...

This systematic review aims to provide an up-to-date evaluation of the available literature on anodyspareunia and treatment interventions. It aims to identify research gaps and to evaluate treatment methods in psychosexual healthcare services. Electronic searches including PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and registered clinical trials yielded 8 studies. Research centered on men who have sex with men (MSM) and cisgender women with a 3:1 ratio. In terms of causes of anodyspareunia, correlates among both MSM and cisgender women included generalized anxiety, performance anxiety, compromised well-being, lack of stimulation, lack of lubrication, and lack of sexual arousal. While research has focused on anodyspareunia among cisgender gay men, limited research has targeted other genders or sexualities including heterosexual men and lesbian and bisexual women. No research was found on intersex, transgender, and gender nonconforming people. Similarly, there were no articles that discussed or evaluated treatment strategies. The findings of this review demonstrate the paucity of research on both the condition of anodyspareunia and its treatment across genders and sexually diverse groups. Both quantitative and qualitative research would not only develop our understanding of anodyspareunia but also contribute to public health through the development of suitable treatment interventions.
... Regarding the associations with the sociodemographic variables, older age, being in a relationship, having children, and higher levels of education seem to be protective factors for the negative emotions related to erotic fantasies. In this sense, it should be recognized how personal experience and a partners' presence and support may improve the personal attitudes towards one's fantasies in a more compassionate way [24,[54][55][56]. People expressing more conservative political and religious attitudes seem to report a lower frequency of erotic fantasies and more negative attitudes towards them. ...

Background: The investigation of sexual fantasies is a delicate issue within sex research. Most studies have focused on the content of these fantasies, rather than on use, experiences, attitudes, and sharing issues, which are fundamental aspects within sexual therapy. The main aim of the present study was to develop and validate the "Sexual Desire and Erotic Fantasies questionnaire-Part 2. Use of Erotic Fantasies (SDEF2)". Methods: The SDEF2 was completed by 1773 Italian participants (1105 women, 645 men, and 23 other genders). Results: The final 21-item version presented a five-factor structure (fantasies frequency, fantasies normality, fantasies importance, negative emotions, and sharing and experiencing). The SDEF2 showed good psychometric properties, internal reliability, construct, and discriminant validity, appearing to be able to differentiate between sexually clinical and functional women and men (based on the FSFI and IIEF cut-off scores). Conclusions: The possibility of assessing fantasies frequency, attitudes, and emotions may be extremely useful both for research and clinical purposes. The current study seems to validate that the SDEF2 is a useful measure of assessing the different aspects related to a fantasizing activity, which was shown to be associated with sexual functioning and satisfaction.
... CFT helps individuals develop compassion for themselves and others (18). It refers to the theory and process underlying the use of the compassion model in psychotherapy (19). This therapy enables people to use their supportive inner voice to respond to self-criticism and shame with kindness (20). ...

Introduction: Mental problems caused by opioid addiction or drug withdrawal can increase the risk of relapse in methadone maintenance treatment. The present study was conducted to compare the efficacy of acceptance and commitment therapy enriched with compassion-focused therapy on the effect of sertraline and venlafaxine on patients' psychological distress under methadone maintenance treatment. Method: This study was a clinical trial with a pre-test and post-test design. Forty patients under methadone maintenance treatment were selected by voluntary sampling and randomly divided into two groups. The first group received acceptance and commitment therapy enriched with compassion-focused therapy and venlafaxine, and the second group received acceptance and commitment therapy enriched with compassion-focused therapy and sertraline for intervention days. The patients were evaluated based on the anxiety, stress, and depression questionnaire. The data were analyzed using the paired t-test and analysis of covariance at a significance level of 0.01. Results: Both venlafaxine, and sertraline plus acceptance and commitment therapy enriched with compassion-focused therapy, were influential on psychological distress and its dimensions (depression, anxiety, and stress) (P<0.001). Sertraline had a more significant effect on psychological distress, and anxiety than venlafaxine (P<0.01). No significant difference was observed between them on depression and stress (p>0.05). Conclusion: Sertraline is more effective than Venlafaxine in controlling psychological symptoms in methadone maintenance treatment.

The positive impact of artificial medical intelligence includes invention of sex robot machines and assisted reproductive technology to enhance sexual pleasure and help combat issues associated with rape, high sex drive, sexual incompatibility, infertility and reproductive alterations. It was hypothesized that the inventions of artificial medical intelligence such as sex robot machines and assisted reproductive technology may potentiate depletion of human reproductive functionality and the prospective predicts extinction of certain human reproductive ability. Thus, the study explored the potential adverse impact of sex robot machines and assisted reproductive technology on human reproduction using various scientific literatures. This review did not undermine or discourage the stated inventions as its significance cannot be overemphasized; but it provided evidence that showed certain adverse role of these inventions on human reproductive system, thus forming basis for development of preventions and/or measures that will aid reduce the prospective adverse impacts suggested.
