Warning symbols communicate hazard information pictorially to supplement or even replace text. During symbol refinement, many similar candidate pictograms may be shown simultaneously to participant evaluators. There is concern when too many pictograms are displayed at once, participants may not always evaluate adequately each candidate before moving to the next set. This is of special concern for symbol design using interactive evolutionary computation because, as the duration of the evaluation period increases, candidate pictograms grow more similar while the recognition of small differences between candidates becomes increasingly important. This study uses eye tracking to evaluate 3x3, 3x4, 3x5, 4x5, and 5x5 display grids of symbol candidates for fixation duration and gaze pattern. Position of pictogram candidates was selected at random, and the order in which evaluators viewed the sets of candidates was randomized between each of the 27 participants. Results revealed that as the number of symbols displayed increases, so also does the number of symbols completely overlooked by the participant evaluators. Symbol grid sizes of 3x4, 3x5 or 4x5 (12-20 symbols) appear to balance the trade-off between speed and accuracy the best.
