The blogging phenomenon has caught the on-line world by surprise; the number of blogs doubles regularly and the number of daily blog entries seems to also continuously increase. Even more interestingly, blogs seem to compete with authoritative media outlets as a means for delivering news and opinions. The perceived power of blogs to inform and form...

... also considered each blog individually to determine if they are good indicators of movie success on their own. Figure 2 shows the number of entries on each blog posted about each movie before its release versus its opening weekend gross. From the graph, we can see that Cinematical is the best blog to use as an indicator of opening gross as the number of entries increases with gross. ...

It can be highly meaningful for individuals, institutions and even governments to extract reliable and insightful trends, opinions or particular pieces of information out of the network single web logs are embedded in - the blogo sphere. However, there has been virtually little in the way of user interfaces designed for the exploration and information gathering from the blogo sphere as a whole to allow for an integrated knowledge collection and information extraction tool. Users have to rely on their own capability to find, select or filter entries and navigate through this complex network, a task that can easily become tedious. An approach to solve this problem could be BLOGCONNECT presented in the following, a tool to visualize the inherent network characteristics of and the aggregated knowledge pool of the blogosphere.

There has been virtually little in the way of user interfaces designed for the exploration and information gathering from large weblog datasets to allow for an integrated and aggregated knowledge collection and information analysis tool. Users have to rely on their own capability to find, select or filter entries and navigate through a blog archive. For weblogs with a large collection of entries this task easily becomes tedious, since current blog interfaces lack fundamental support for facilitating the exploration of their archives. A solution to this problem could be POSTCONNECT, a mature blog-archive visualization tool presented in this paper.

Accordingly, users easily find information on the topic of interest in a short amount of time (Tirapat, Espiritu, & Stroulia, 2006). For instance, Takama and his colleagues (2005) attempted to develop a visualization map that contributes to interactive blog search. ...

Many educators have attempted to implement a blog in educational contexts to enhance the communication environment among students and teachers. However, it is uncertain as to why traditional computer-mediated communication (CMC) applications should be replaced with blogs. It is time to comprehensively explore the effects of educational blogs by considering the CMC tools. This paper reviews prior studies and develops a model for the use of blogs in educational contexts by taking into account socio-technical systems theory. The model contributes to interactivity, an open system, a visualization tool, and a decentralized environment of online communication circumstance.

Browsing a blog archive is currently not well supported. Users cannot gain an overview of a blog easily, nor do they receive adequate support for finding potentially interesting entries in the blog. To overcome these problems, we developed a visualization tool that offers a new way to browse a blog archive. The main design principles of the tool are twofold. First, a blog should provide a rich overview to help users reason about the blog at a glance. Second, a blog should utilize social interaction history preserved in the archive to ease exploration and navigation. The tool was evaluated using a tool-specific questionnaire and the Questionnaire for User Interaction Satisfaction. Responses from the participants confirmed the utility of the design principles: the user satisfaction was high, supported by a low error rate of the given tasks. Qualitative feedback revealed that the decision to select which entry to read was multidimensional, involving factors such as the topic, the posting time, the length, and the number of comments on an entry. We discuss the implications of these findings for the design of navigational support for blogs, in particular to facilitate exploratory tasks.

With the ever-growing popularity of online media such as blogs and social networking sites, the Internet is a valuable source of information for product and service reviews. Attempting to classify a subset of these documents using polarity metrics can be a daunting task. After a survey of previous research on sentiment polarity, we propose a novel approach based on Support Vector Machines. We compare our method to previously proposed lexical-based and machine learning (ML) approaches by applying it to a publicly available set of movie reviews. Our algorithm will be integrated within a blog visualization tool.

This chapter focuses on the discussion about how the data collected by the crawler (refer to Chap. 11) can and should be analyzed to extract, exploit and represent meaningful knowledge and to leverage content- and context-related structures and dynamics of partial blogospheres. There is a multitude of data analyzers that could process the information as collected by the crawler (refer to Extraction in Fig. 10. 1). Our research supports the overall subdivision of this multitude into two general categories, namely content analyses and network analyses (refer to Analysis in Fig. 10. 1).

Social networks, especially weblogs, have been growing dramatically over the past years in the World Wide Web, making them a valuable source of information. As the amount of information exponentially grows, current research focuses on the meaningful and easy-to-use presentation of this massive amount of interconnected data, making it feasible to navigate, explore, and monitor the public knowledge and emotions of the complex social networks.

With the rapid growth of data on World Wide Web, this paper presents researchers with an analysis that summarizes data collection and evolution features in the World Wide Web. We have reviewed a large corpus of published work to extract the research features supported by advanced Web features, i.e., blogs, microblogging services, video-on-demand web sites and social networks. We have presented summary of our review and analysis. This will help in further analysis of the evolution of communities using and supporting the features of the continuously evolving World Wide Web.
