There is much information about odonates in lakes in the whole Europe. The lack of data about this group of invertebrates in the Lake Ohrid -the UNESCO natural and cultural heritage is unusual. Data related to the 41 species of the dragonfly fauna of central and southwestern Republic of North Macedonia and nearby Albania, gathered during the post European Congress on Odonatology 2012 fieldtrip on July 6-13th, 2012 are presented. The Ohrid-Prespa region was particularly investigated. The majority of previous data available for this area is old and outdated. Additionally, recent degradation of habitats, combined with sporadic records of some patrimonial species made new surveys necessary. The presence of Gomphus schneiderii Selys, 1850 and S. flavomaculata in the region was confirmed whereas L. pectoralis was not found again. Conversely, Coenagrion scitulum (Rambur, 1842) was observed in Albania for the first time. The national Odonata checklists contain now 63 species in Republic of North Macedonia and 59 in Albania.

Dragonfly research in the West Balkans experienced significant boost in recent years, also due to the establishment of the Balkan OdonatOlogical Meetings (BOOM) in 2011. The main goal of BOOM is to contribute to research and protection of dragonflies of the Balkan Peninsula. This paper presents the faunistic results of the 5 th BOOM, held in Republic of Macedonia. Between 7 and 15 August 2015, 46 sites were surveyed and 41 dragonfly species found. This represents more than half of the hitherto recorded dragonfly species for the country. This paper includes data for localities and habitats from central and southern part of R. Macedonia, which was less investigated in the past. Significant results include the first documented report of Selysiothemis nigra for the country. New data on several species with a comparably low number of previously published records for R. Macedonia, i.e. Chalcolestes parvidens, Caliaeschna microstigma, Lindenia tetraphylla, Cordule-gaster heros, C. bidentata, C. insignis, Somatochlora meridionalis, S. flavomaculata, Sympetrum vulgatum and S. flaveolum, are also presented and brief discussion is provided. Izvleček – FAVNISTIČNI REZULTATI 5. MEDNARODNEGA SREČANJA ODO-NATOLOGOV BALKANA – BOOM 2015, REPUBLIKA MAKEDONIJA Raziskovanje kačjih pastirjev je na zahodnem Balkanu v zadnjih letih doživelo velik napredek. Slednje je tudi rezultat vzpostavitve širšega balkanskega odonatolo-škega sodelovanja v okviru Mednarodnih srečanj odonatologov Balkana (BOOM), ki potekajo od leta 2011 dalje. Glavni cilj srečanj je prispevati k raziskavam in varstvu kačjih pastirjev balkanskega polotoka. Ta prispevek predstavlja favnistične rezultate 5. BOOM, ki je potekal v Republiki Makedoniji. Na 46 pregledanih lokalitetah smo med 7. in 15. avgustom 2015 popisali 41 vrst kačjih pastirjev, kar je več kot polovica vseh znanih vrst kačjih pastirjev Republike Makedonije. Članek vključuje podatke za lokalitete in habitate osrednjega in južnega dela države, ki je bil v preteklosti slabo raziskan. Pomembnejši rezultati vključujejo prvo dokumentirano poročanje o poja-vljanju temnega slaniščarja (Selysiothemis nigra) za državo. Zabeležena so tudi nova nahajališča v R. Makedoniji redkih vrst kačjih pastirjev. Ti so: presenetljiva pazverca (Chalcolestes parvidens), bledi vetrnjak (Caliaeschna microstigma), velika peščenka (Lindenia tetraphylla), veliki, povirni in modrooki studenčar (Cordulegaster heros, C. bidentata, C. insignis), sredozemski in pegasti lesketnik (Somatochlora meridio-nalis, S. flavomaculata) ter navadni in rumeni kamenjak (Sympetrum vulgatum, S. flaveolum).

The assessment of the diversity of invertebrates in Macedonia was based on previous assess-ments and analyses of new published data in the period 2003-2013 (after the first country study on biodiversity). The total number of species was estimated at almost 13400 that represents an increase of more than 3700 species. The largest number of species is in the phyllum Arthropoda (over 11800 species) i.e. the class Insecta with more than 10000 species. In this 10-years period (2003-2013) 64 new invertebrate species have been described for science with its locus typicus in Macedonia or at least part of the type series originates from Macedonia. The highest number of endemic and relict species can be found in the lakes of Ohrid and Prespa as well as the mountainous areas, especially in western Macedonia. Although less known, endogean habitats in Macedonia (including caves) hold significant diversity of species. This paper also deals with the conservation of invertebrates. According to the national legislation there are 35 invertebrates listed as strictly protected and 513 species as protected, however the criteria for selection are vague and taxonomic status of many of these species is doubtful. This situation might be overcome by elaboration of national red list assessment. So far, only daily butterflies were subject to an attempt for assessment according to the IUCN red list criteria. Furthermore, eight Prime Butterfly Areas were designated in Macedonia on the basis of five target species. The information on allochtonous and invasive species of invertebrates in Macedonia is very scarce. The presented list includes about 50 species.

The status of a West European endemic species, namely Gomphus pulchellus, is unclear on the Balkan Peninsula. The authors report G. pulchellus from Lake Skadar (one site in Montenegro and one in Albania), among others based on exuviae, definitely evidencing the autochthonic occurrence of the species in the western part of the Peninsula. A strongly isolated but stable island of the distribution area probably exists here. It is the first record of G. pulchellus in Albania.
