A study to determine the surface body parasites of domesticated dogs and goats was conducted in selected communities within the Emughan clan of Abua/Odual Local Government Area, Rivers State, Nigeria. A total 150 domesticated animals compress of 75 dogs and 75 goats were samples and investigated using force, combing and brushing of the animal skin. The overall infestation was 81.3%, showing high prevalence of surface body parasites in the study area. High rate of infestation was recorded in animals from Egunughan 23.0%, Aminiboko 22.0%, Owerewere 19.0% while Obragh 8.0% was least infested. While the commonly infective animal was Dog which harbor 43.3% of total infestation. However, the most prevalence surface body parasite observed in this study was Tick 49.2%, followed by Flea, 38.0% and Lice, 12.0%. Although the rate of infestation was not statistically significant per parasite but was significant against animal and community investigated. From the result of this study, it can be stated that lack of awareness on infection pathway between human and domesticated animals account for about 85% zoonosis in the study area.

Background: Skin diseases are usually chronic in nature but not life-threatening. They affect the well-being and pose a threat to the general health of the affected animals. Aim: This study aimed to investigate epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic aspects of ectoparasitic infestations in dogs in a number of Egyptian governorates. Methods: Ninety dogs (58 males and 32 females) aged from one month to eleven years from six Egyptian governorates were clinically examined during the years 2022 and 2023. Skin scraping samples were taken from all examined dogs, and deep ear swab specimens from five dogs suspected to have ear mites were obtained and parasitologically examined. Different ectoparasites were classified according to their morphological features. Twenty dogs were treated in four different patterns of administration of local, systemic, and supportive medications. Results: The prevalence of ectoparasite infestation in examined dogs was 64% (58/90). The majority of ectoparasitic infestations (50/58) were single, while the rest (8/58) were mixed. Ninespecies of ectoparasites of fourtaxa were identified: a tick species (Rhipicephalus sanguineus); which had the highest prevalence among isolated ectoparasites from dogs (29%, 26/90), three flea species (Ctenocephalides canis, Ctenocephalides orientis and Ctenocephalides felis) isolated from 18 out of 90 cases (20%), two types of dog chewing louse species (Trichodectes canis and Heterodoxus spiniger) isolated from 2/90 (2.2%) and three mite species: Demodex canis (18/90, 20%), Sarcoptes scabei var. canis (5/90, 6%) and Otodectes cynotis (2/90, 2.2%). The logistic regression analysis of the potential risk factors associated with the prevalence of ectoparasites in dogs revealed that the age, breed, housing environment, habitat, and season were the significant factors affecting the prevalence of ectoparasites (p<0.05 in contrast dog gender did not have a significant effect. Treated dogs showed variations in recovery times and dogs received ancillary treatment showed rapid skin improvement and hair regrowth. Doramectin was effective against ticks and fleas, but Fluralaner was more effective against Demodex mites. Conclusion: The prevalence of ectoparasites in dogs in Egypt could be considered as high and necessitates efforts toward accurate diagnosis, treatment, and control to reduce their impact on animal and public health.

Following previous detection of Hepatozoon canis and Cercopithifilaria bainae in dogs from Iran, this study aimed to identify potential tick vectors collected from dogs from five provinces of Iran. From October 2018 to September 2021, a total of 222 owned and 541 sheltered dogs from Hamedan (n=305), Kermanshah (n = 227), Yazd (n =80), Khouzestan (n =71), and Mazandaran (n =80) were examined for ticks. Collected ticks (n =3339) were identified morphologically, and adults were screened for the detection of Hepatozoon and Cercopithifilaria either with conventional PCR (n=119 ticks), tick dissection (n=106), or microscopical examination after fixation in formalin (n =102). A total of 169 dogs (22.1%) were infested with ticks. Tick infestation rate varied in different provinces (i.e., 32.4% in Hamedan, 27.3% in Kermanshah, 10.0% in Yazd), but no ticks were collected from dogs in Mazandaran and Khouzestan. The majority of male ticks were identified as Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (89.3%) and Rhipicephalus turanicus, but one dog from Hamedan was infested with Hyalomma asiaticum (1 male and 1 female) and Hyalomma excavatum (1 male). At the molecular examination, Cercopithifilaria was detected in 14.28%, Hepatozoon in 6.7% ticks, and both parasites in 1.68% of Rhipicephalus ticks. Parasites were not observed at tick dissection and histological examinations. Nucleotide sequencing and phylogenetic analyses revealed C. bainae and H. canis in R. sanguineus sensu lato and R. turanicus ticks. Data suggests that both tick species above may play a role in the epidemiology of Cercopithifilaria and Hepatozoon in Iran.

Background: The painful bite of Pulex irritans; causes wound on the host body and is a vector for Bartonella bacteria species, which can cause trench fever, Rickettsia species, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Mediterranean spotted fever. We conducted a study to find out the hosts, abundance, as well as the molecular characteristics of this flea species in Meshkin-Shahr County, Ardabil Province, northwest of Iran. Methods: After collecting fleas from different reservoir hosts and transferring them to the laboratory, identification was done using different morphological characters as well as the internal transcribed spacer1 (ITS1) molecular marker. Results: This morphological study indicated that from the 1053 fleas, which were collected from 162 different animals, including cats and dogs, 74 specimens belonged to human flea, Pulex irritans. In addition, in molecular analysis showed a high sequence similarity (99.5%) with the P. irritans counterparts from Spain country and Zanjan of Iran available in GenBank. Conclusion: Pulex irritans species is an obligatory hematophagous ectoparasite of human and animals. Therefore, considering the relatively high frequency of this species on the body of cats and dogs, it is suggested to conduct more studies on its distribution and the possibility of being a vector of pathogens among these animals and human. The results of these studies will be used to compile and review the control programs of this vector.

ARTICLE INFO ABSTRACT Keywords The present study aimed to identify ectoparasites species infesting dogs in Qalyubia governorate, Egypt during the period extended from June 2021 to May 202. For this purpose, 271 dogs belonged to nine species were examined to detect ectoparasites. The results showed that prevalence of ticks species was 98.2% and 1.8% for Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Hyalomma dormedari, respectively. The incidence of fleas species was 48.24% and 51.76% for Ctenocephalides felis and Ctenocephalides canis, respectively. Lice species distribution was 84.46% and 14.5% for Heterodoxus spriniger and Haematopinus species, respectively. The infestation by ticks, fleas, and lice was the highest (40.34, 33.89, and 31.08 %, respectively) in summer season, while the winter season showed the lowest infestation of 7.31, 17.37 and 19.52% for ticks, fleas and lice respectively. Stray dogs had the highest infestation rate (62.5%), and male dogs were slightly higher than females without significance (27.9, and 25.4, respectively). All ages are infested, and the highest age of infestation was 7 month to 1 year (15.86%) while young dogs less than 6 months showed less infestation. Dogs weighed (≥ 25kg) showed higher infestation (24.35%) than other weights. Ectoparasites infestation was (57.57%) in pregnant bitches and (31.25%) in lactating bitches. Also, single and mixed infestation between male and female dogs, fur color, and place where ectoparasites distributed on dogs were calculated. It could be conclud that stray dogs were more susceptible to ectoparasites infestation than dog breeds. Dogs can be affected by several species of the genus Babesia causing important diseases in different regions of the world. Among these species are Babesia canis, B. vogeli, B. rossi, B. gibsoni, and B. vulves. The aim of this study was to detect the presence of Babesia spp. in stray dogs from Havana province. Sixty dogs were studied and subjected to haematological examination, blood smear and PCR, which amplified 18S rRNA. Three animals (5 %) showed hematocrit values higher than reference values while 23 (38.3 %) showed lower hematocrit values, indicating the presence of an anemic syndrome in those dogs. According to the leukogram analysis, five dogs (8.3 %) had leukocytosis and 7 (11.6 %) had leukopenia. Thirty-one animals were infested with Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato ticks and 10 were co-infested with Rhipicepahalus microplus ticks. Twenty percent of the samples tested positive by PCR, while microscopic examination revealed Babesia spp. merozoites in only 13.3 % of the samples. A relationship was observed between PCR-positive animals and the decrease in hematocrit value. There was no association between the presence of ticks and sex in animals positive to Babesia spp. The present study demonstrates the presence of Babesia spp. in stray dogs from Havana province.

The raccoon, Procyon lotor, is native to North and Central America but has been introduced to several Old Word countries including Iran. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of ectoparasites of raccoons in Iran. During 2015–2017, a total of 30 feral raccoons were collected from Guilan Province, northern Iran. The fur of raccoons was examined for the presence of ectoparasites. The collected ectoparasites were preserved in 70% ethanol and microscopically and morphologically identified. In total, 11 fleas and 244 ixodid ticks were collected from 18 (60%) raccoons for the first time in Iran. Two raccoons (6.7%) harbored just fleas, five raccoons (16.7%) both fleas and ticks and 11 raccoons (36.7%) just ticks. Two species of fleas: Ctenocephalides felis (cat flea) and Pulex irritans (human flea) were collected from seven raccoons (23.3%). Four species of ixodid ticks: Haemaphysalis concinna, Ixodes ricinus, Rhipicephalus sanguineus and R. turanicus were collected from 16 raccoons (53.3%). All ectoparasites, except for cat flea, were found on raccoons for the first time. The prevalence, mean abundance and mean intensity of ectoparasites and the indices of affinity, association and diversity were calculated. The pair of species H. concinna/ I. ricinus showed significant association and the infestation with I. ricinus in cubs was significantly higher than in adults (P ˂ 0.05). The medical importance of zoonotic infections transmittable by raccoons and their ectoparasites is discussed. The investigation of different possible vector-borne infections in raccoons and their ectoparasites in the study area is suggested.

The study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of clinical conditions in dogs and cats admitted at Teaching Veterinary Hospital (TVH) in Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU) during the period of January to December 2012. A total of 424 clinical cases, 324 (76.42%) dogs and 100 (23.58%) cats were observed with different clinical conditions. These conditions were primarily categorized as medicinal cases, surgical cases and vaccination and health check up. Medicinal cases occupied highest number in dogs 167 (51.54%) and cats 54 (54%) followed by surgical cases 77(23.76%) in dogs and 29 (29%) in cats and vaccination and health check up 80 (24.69%) in dogs and 17(17%) in cats. Among of the medicinal cases parasitic diseases occupied highest prevalence 51 (15.74%) in dogs. Prevalence of clinical conditions was analyzed on the basis of age, sex, breed and season. Prevalence of ectoparasitic and infectious diseases in dogs was higher in winter with significant P-value (P ≤ 0.05). Prevalence of clinical conditions in response to age, sex and breed were not significant (P > 0.05). Keeping in view these findings, an appropriate control strategy could be designed and applied, which helps to prevent of these disease conditions in study area. Canine vector-borne diseases are caused by a wide range of pathogens transmitted by arthropods. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of Dirofilaria immitis antigen and Ehrlichia canis, Leishmania infantum, and Anaplasma phagocytophilum/platys antibodies using a Rapid test (Anigen Rapid Caniv-4 Leish, Bionote, South Korea). The study was conducted with a total of 50 mixed-breed dogs (26 males and 24 females). Anaplasma phagocytophilum/platys antibodies were detected in 5 of the dogs (10%). None of the tested dogs were positive for D. immitis antigen or L. infantum and E.canis antibodies. As a result; it was concluded that protection and control measures regarding anaplasmosis should be taken. Köpeklerin vektör kaynaklı hastalıklarına arthropodlar tarafından nakledilen oldukça geniş çeşitlilikte patojenler neden olmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı Siirt ili köpeklerinde Dirofilaria immitis antijeni ile Ehrlichia canis, Leishmania infantum ve Anaplasma phagocytophilum/platys antikorlarının hızlı tanı testi (Anigen Rapid Caniv-4 Leish, Bionote, Güney Kore) kullanılarak belirlenmesiydi. Çalışmanın materyalini farklı ırklardan 26 erkek ve 24 dişi olmak üzere toplam 50 köpek oluşturdu. Çalışma sonucunda örneklerin 5 (%10)'inde Anaplasma phagocytophilum/platys antikorları tespit edilirken D. immitis antijeni, L. infantum ve E.canis antikorları tespit edilemedi. Sonuç olarak; anaplazmozis ile ilgili koruma ve kontrol tedbirlerinin alınması gerektiği kanısına varılmıştır.
