This work sought to examine the impact of physical exercise, and mental exertion prior to launch on lifeboat search effectiveness. Four three-person volunteer crews from the United Kingdom’s Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), were exposed to combinations of physical and mental exertion tasks before launch and performance measured during riverine scenario-based search and rescue training. Two unchallenged groups (control) were deployed for comparison. Half the deployed crews were subjected to a distraction exercise completed during the search to simulate real-world conditions to place demands upon the attention of the crew (such as passing radio traffic, navigating or planning search tactics). Heart rate, GPS tracking and search success were monitored, with success defined as the location and transmission of an identifying code of each placed target. Heart rate monitoring showed clear association between measured psychological stress and the physical challenges presented to the crews and demonstrated that the exertion and distracting elements of the experiment had a measurable effect on the participants, where lower heart rates corresponded to greater success in searching. Overall, results showed that exercise and mental activity generally improved perceptual performance of the crew in the pre-scenario-based training, whilst the distracting element (alone and in combination with exertion) diminished performance during the scenario-based training. Increases in alertness and search performance have significant implications for those involved in search and rescue. This study contributes to an increasing body of cross-disciplinary work exploring team performance in high-pressure situations.

A company’s productivity and success measure its effectiveness. This article presents the problem of economic efficiency and aspects related to environmental protection. The basic parameters analysed were the engine type and how it affects the environment. Over three months, the analysis was carried out and used the data envelopment analysis. As a result of the research carried out, the comparison of the amount of fuel used with the amount of transported goods should answer the following questions: What type of engine should be ordered for new trucks to show the best efficiency during operation? What is the efficiency of the currently used engines? How do they affect the environment? The method proposed in the article makes it possible to define the initial requirements for the definition of truck units, which is included in the conclusions of this paper.

New information technologies are beneficial for ship operations in terms of safety and utilisation of company resources. However, new cybercrime threats have emergedaffecting, both ship safety and security that need to be assessed and evaluated. At the moment, actions of the maritime industry to keep pace dealing with such threats are slow when compared with other business sectors. As a high concern, maritime pirates could take advantage of cybersecurity breaches to monitor ship activity and gain information for potential protective failures. In 2021 companies and seafarers should be able to demonstrate knowledge and safeguard policies of their companies. Nevertheless, there is limited discussion on how companies will educate seafarers for existing threats. Therefore, in this study, a risk-based methodology is proposed for evaluation of cybersecurity threats in the context of a piracy attack. STPA-SafeSec’s analysis is used to identify security threats, and FAHP is utilised for evaluating the severity of each security constraint. Audits on 15 ships with 315 seafarers indicated that there are significant security gaps mainly due to lack of awareness from operators and seafarers. Despite the apprehension of certain parties, the demand for maritime emergency logistics has emerged following the occurrence of maritime accidents around the world while trading activities are performed. The requirement of Emergency Logistics Centre (ELC) is crucial as part of the maritime disaster preparedness at the Straits of Malacca (SOM). The ELC prevents massive losses, should any disaster occur in the rough ocean. Based on unforeseen situations at sea, this paper explores the contributing factors of the ELC in proposing and improving strategies for Kuala Linggi seaport as an ELC. The Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) has been employed to achieve the objectives of this paper. The outcome of this paper indicates that resource availability, risk management, and geographical factors are the three key attributes that are substantially required to transform Kuala Linggi seaport into an ELC. Furthermore, disaster preparedness, ELC supply-chain management system, and safety procedures are the crucial components to enhance the operational efficacy at this seaport as an ELC. The findings of this research may contribute to the safety of the maritime route and disaster preparedness at the SOM.
