In this paper, an IEEE 802.11-based wireless mesh network testbed is developed to evaluate the performance of wireless mesh networks in real environment. The proposed testbed consists of mesh routers and mesh clients, where the mesh routers have minimal mobility and form the backbone of the wireless mesh network In order to build the proposed 802.1...

Mechanism for determining and selecting the best data traffic path for a data packet to pass during the process of exchanging information and data communication. One mechanism for determining and selecting the data traffic path is to apply rules on the router device. The optimization model carried out in this study will provide an initial description of how an OSPF routing protocol works by implementing traffic engineering technology on wireless mesh networks (WMN) using a multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) model. Then analysis and assessment of the factors related to the optimization of the OSPF routing protocol is carried out by making a topological design on the wireless mesh network using MPLS network models using simulator tools.

Many commercial wireless mesh network (WMN) products are available in the marketplace with their own proprietary standards, but interoperability among the different vendors is not possible. Open source communities have their own WMN implementation in accordance with the IEEE 802.11s draft standard, Linux open80211s project and FreeBSD WMN implementation. While some studies have focused on the test bed of WMNs based on the open80211s project, none are based on the FreeBSD. In this paper, we built an embedded system using the FreeBSD WMN implementation that utilizes two channels and evaluated its performance. This implementation allows the legacy system to connect to the WMN independent of the type of platform and distributes the load between the two non-overlapping channels. One channel is used for the backhaul connection and the other one is used to connect to the stations to wireless mesh network. By using the power efficient 802.11 technology, this device can also be used as a gateway for the wireless sensor network (WSN).

Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) is a new emerging technology in wireless networks. WMNs are flexible, cost -effective and light infrastructure based wireless technology. The IEEE has set off the task group for 802.11s to reconcile about the WMNs development. The WMNS draft still far from its final version but major characteristic are defined and work is still in progress. Many researchers had done their wireless mesh network experiments through simulations. The simulation results and real world implementation results have big differences. In this paper, we have set up the testbed in our lab. We have used some different windows size for TCP and UDP transmission and analyze those throughput results.

This thesis presents the lessons learned from building an IEEE 802.11 wireless mesh network (WMN) test-bed. Each network node consists of a Linux processor with multiple IEEE 802.11b/g transceivers operating in the 2.4 GHz band. Each transceiver consists of a medium access control (MAC) and base-band processor (BBP) in addition to a radio. A device driver was modified to control some of the key transceiver functions. The test-bed's Wi-Fi interfaces can be programmed to implement any mesh communication topology. All Wi-Fi interfaces use omni-directional antennas and the IEEE 802.11b operation mode. The test-bed design is easily extendable to incorporate newer Wi-Fi technologies. Measurements of co-channel interference in each Wi-Fi channel including received signal strength (RSS) and signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) are presented. The AutoMin algorithm was developed in order to use the captured physical layer (PHY) metrics to avoid Wi-Fi congestion during test-bed operation. A comparison of a software-based spectrum analyzer to a commercial one is described. Key Wi-Fi functions in the Ralink driver source code are explored in depth. The compliance of the Ralink chip-set to the IEEE 802.11b spectral mask was verified. The maximum driver-induced retuning rate for the popular Ralink radio was found experimentally. This data can be used to optimize the performance of IEEE 802.11 WMNs.

This paper has discussed some of the common Mobility Models and few uncommon ones and their impact on various networks and routing parameters. In the past, mobility models were rather casually used to evaluate network performance under different routing protocols. Therefore, the network performance will be strongly influenced by the nature of the mobility pattern. The mobility model plays an essential role especially in routing on mobile ad-hoc networks. Mobility management in ad hoc wireless networks faces many challenges. Mobility constantly causes the network topology to change. In order to keep accurate routes, the routing protocols must dynamically readjust to such changes. Thus, routing update traffic overhead is significantly high. Different mobility patterns have in general different impact on a specific network protocol or application.
