The depth of sowing is important in maximizing the potential of seedling emergence and crop growth. Too shallow sowing results in poor germination due to inadequate soil moisture at the top soil layer. On the other hand, deep sowing can also significantly reduce crop emergence and growth. It would create the emergence seedling had less performance...

Main conclusion Salinity induced metabolite responses resulted in differential accumulation of flavonoids and antioxidant metabolites in shoots and roots suggesting improved antioxidant capacity in providing salt-adaptive phenotype of tef seedling. Abstract Tef [(Eragrostis tef) (Zucc.) Trotter] is an important ‘cash crop’ of Ethiopia grown mainly...

... Optimal seed depth is considered a desirable goal in all crop establishment systems [Karayel and Özmerzi 2008]. The appropriate depth of sowing depends on the type, mechanical composition of the soil, and the weather conditions of the region where production is leading [Baye et al. 2020]. The depth of sowing is crucial to achieve an effective and higher crop yield through the potential for seedling emergence. ...
... According to Baye et al. [2020], depth of sowing has a significant impact on the growth, yield, and germination of faba bean. In their study, the shallower depth of sowing caused better above-mentioned traits, minimizing competition between plants for available light, water, and nutrients compared to the deeper depth of sowing. ...

Effect of the depth and rate of sowing on the yield and yield components of determinate and indeterminate faba beans (Vicia faba var. minor L.) cultivars under conditions of Southwestern Poland Wpływ głębokości i gęstości siewu na plon i jego komponenty w uprawie samokończącej i niesamokończącej odmiany bobiku (Vicia faba var. minor L.) w warunkach Polski południowo-zachodniej Summary. Sowing depth and sowing density are considered important factors that affect the yield and profitability of crop cultivation. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of differentiated sowing depths and rates on the yield components and seed yield of two faba bean morphotypes: Bobas-indeterminate growth habit and Granit-determinate growth habit, grown in Southwestern Poland in the years 2011-2013. The course of weather in the years of research had the strongest impact on the studied yield components and yield. The indeterminate Bobas cultivar was characterized by the most beneficial morphological traits, compared to the determinate Granit cultivar. Among the tested sowing rates, 60 and 75 seeds per 1 m 2 caused the highest yield. The depth of sowing had only a significant effect on seed yield; the highest yield was found at 5 cm compared to deeper sowing.

Another factor effect on yield is sowing depth, something which has a significant effect on the ability of plants to emerge and allows to create an appropriate environmental place for the plant [17]. Another factor effect on yield is sowing depth, something which has a significant effect on the ability of plants to emerge and allows to create an appropriate environmental place for the plant [17]. It is an essential issue to plant at the appropriate depth to receive good percentage germination, satisfying emergence and high plant population [17]. Emergence of faba beans is hypogeal, meaning that the cotyledons are in the soil while only the shoot emerges from the soil surface [16,18]. ...
... Germination starts in 4-12 days after sowing with an optimum temperature around 20 °C [13,15]. According to Baye et al. [17], sowing Faba beans with a depth 8 cm positively impacted germination and growth, including height, compared to deeper depth of 12 cm. ...

Sowing depth and density are factors which affect development and yielding due to their influence on plants’ competition for water, light and nutrients. The aim of the present research was to evaluate the effect of sowing depth (5 and 8 cm) and density (45, 60, 75 seeds m2) on the development and yield of two morphotypes of faba bean. Higher plants were found at 8 cm sowing depth in 2011 and 2013, in turn, plant density before harvest, at 5 cm in 2011 and 8 cm in 2013. The greatest seed yield was observed while sowing shallower in 2011 (4.50 t ha−1) and 2012 (6.62 t ha−1), and deeper in 2013 (3.53 t ha−1). Cultivar played in important role in shaping plant height and seed yield in all years of the experiment, as well as in straw yield in 2012. Bobas characterized by the greatest seed productivity in all years of experiment compared to Granit, as well as quantity of straw yield in 2011 and 2012 (3.51 and 4.88 t ha−1, respectively) and therefore can be recommended for cultivation. Taking into account plant density before harvest in 2011–2013 as well as straw yield in 2011 and 2013, the most favorable sowing density is 75 seeds per m2.
