This checklist is the fifth and last compilation on the decapod crustaceans reported to São Paulo (Brazil) coastal area, resulting from long-term multidisciplinary projects, which combined morphological analyses and molecular techniques. The current research includes 75 decapod species, herein referred as shrimps/lobsters-like (shrimps, ghost-shrimps, lobsters, and related groups), reported to São Paulo coastal area. These species occur in marine, estuarine, and amphidromous habitats and are classified into 21 families as follow: Aristeidae (2 spp., 2 genera), Atyidae (4 spp., 2 genera), Axianassidae (1 sp., 1 genus), Callianassidae (1 sp., 1 genus), Callichiridae (6 spp., 4 genera), Crangonidae (1 sp., 1 genus), Glyphocrangonidae (1 sp., 1 genus), Luciferidae (2 spp., 2 genera), Nephropidae (4 spp., 2 genera), Palaemonidae (15 spp., 9 genera), Palinuridae (2 spp., 1 genus), Pandalidae (1 sp., 1 genus), Pasiphaeidae (1 sp., 1 genus), Penaeidae (10 spp., 6 genera), Sergestidae (3 spp., 3 genera), Sicyoniidae (4 spp., 1 genus), Scyllaridae (5 spp., 3 genera), Solenoceridae (4 spp., 3 genera), Stenopodidae (2 spp., 1 genus), and Upogebiidae (6 spp., 1 genus). We generated new sequences of cytochrome oxidase subunit I (barcode region) and 16S genes (51 and 54, respectively) of 54 species. Updated information on pelagic shrimps collected in the southeast Pacific is provided. The study is based on recent expeditions during the last decade off the Chilean coast and on the material of the 1962 Eltanin expedition to Peru and Chile (cruises 3–5). This material was deposited in the Museum Support Center of the Smithsonian Institution but have so far not been studied. The study area was from 07°S to 62°S, from Punta Chicama, Peru, to Drake Passage, and from the continental slope of southeast of South America to Chilean Island (Desventuradas Islands, Easter Island and Juan Fernandez Archipelago). Samples were taken from the epipelagic to the bathypelagic zones. The information obtained is compared with a previous review published by G. Guzman in 2008. A total of 78 species were registered, and the differences with the 79 species reported earlier are discussed. It is concluded that some of the inconsistencies between both values correspond to species that were collected only once due to their low abundance and characterized as rare species, probably due to sampling methods. This is the case of Glyphus marsupialis, collected only once off Peru. Biogeographical connections between the shrimp fauna of the study area and other zones of the Pacific Ocean are discussed. Two distributional patterns were observed, one related with the circum-Antarctic waters and another related with the West Pacific. Despite these recent efforts, the pelagic fauna occurring in large zones of the Southeast Pacific remains unknown. Surveys in the area have been episodic, thus impeding the possibility to establish accurate biogeographical patterns and relationships with other regions and to increase our knowledge on the biology of the shrimp pelagic fauna.

This paper reports the occurrence of four deep waters shrimps of the family Solenoceridae in the southwestern Atlantic, Brazil. The rare Hadropenaeus modestus is collected for the second time from Brazilian waters after 138 years, filling the gaps on its distributional pattern. Mesopenaeus tropicalis is a new register for Potiguar basin, although it is common along Brazilian coast. Hymenopenaeus chacei and H. laevis are recorded for the first time in southwestern Atlantic. The records of these species in the southwestern Atlantic are an important advancement to raise the knowledge of the deep-sea shrimps.

The current biogeographic and taxonomic knowledge on decapod larvae in tropical oceans is still very incomplete, in spite of their huge ecological and socio-economic importance. The present study reports two new records for decapod larval forms in pelagic environments off oceanic islands in the western tropical Atlantic, and provides detailed diagnoses and images of these larvae. Samples were taken from July 2010 to November 2014 using neuston, bongo and WP-2 nets at three localities: St. Peter and St. Paul’s Archipelago (SPSP), Rocas Atoll (RA) and Fernando de Noronha Archipelago (FN). The larval forms Cerataspis monstrosa (Gray, 1828) and Amphionides reynaudii (H. Milne Edwards, 1832) were recorded around these areas, constituting the first record for these oceanic islands. This paper reports two deep-sea shrimps, Acanthephyra acanthitelsonis and A. armata from southwestern Atlantic waters. The samples were collected in two different moments, the first in the Potiguar Basin, northeast of Brazil (03/05° S; 38/35° W), covering the states of Rio Grande do Norte (RN) and Ceará (CE) in the year of 2011, and afterward on Rocas Atoll, located in the state of Rio Grande do Norte (RN) (3° 51’ S, 033° 49’ W; 3° 52' S, 033° 47' W) in the year of 2015. The occurrence of A. acanthitelsonis on Rocas Atoll and A. armata found along the continental slope in the Potiguar Basin, comprising both species, which were recorded for the first time in the southwestern Atlantic. This paper increases the number of Acanthephyra species recorded in Brazilian waters up to six and adds to our knowledge and distribution of deep-sea fauna in the south Atlantic.

Deep-sea pelagic habitats include the dark ocean (>200 m depth) beneath the epipelagic (0–200 m depth) layer as well as the mesopelagic (200–1000 m) and bathypelagic (water column >1000 m) zones. Except for limited areas of hydrothermal vents and seeps, life patterns in deep-sea pelagic habitats along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) depend on biological production exported from the sunlit epipelagic layers. In this section, we will describe individual components of the pelagic environment in the MAR region, following the size categories of biota.

The deep sea is one of the last frontiers to biodiversity knowledge mainly due to the difficulties to access this environment. Additionally, the deep sea is constantly suffering anthropogenic impact (fishery activities, mininger exploration, and pollution). Recent efforts have contributed to knowledge on deep-sea Decapoda in Brazilian waters. However, these inventories are still far from complete. The main goal of this work is to compile the existing information, including these recent inventories of typically deep-sea species from Brazilian waters, >500 m depth (also including the Rio Grande Rise area). We herein list a total of 181 species of the two decapod suborders: Dendrobranchiata (32 species) and Pleocyemata (149 species). From the Pleocyemata eight out of the ten decapod infraorders were represented: 68 species of carideans; 31 of anomurans, 36 of brachyurans, 5 species of Astacidea and Polychelidae, 2 species of Achelata, and 1 of Stenopodidea and Axiidea each. As expected, the shrimp fauna was more diverse than the crab and lobster fauna. This is in contrast with the global diversity which is highest in the Brachyura.

In this paper, we provide some available information about the occurrence and some taxonomic aspects of 19 species from the Superfamily Oplophoroidea in the southwestern Atlantic (Brazilian waters), with the update to 22 species of Oplophoroidea occurring in Brazilian waters. Samples were collected during two sets of surveys. The first was performed in 2009 and 2011 in the Potiguar Basin in northeast of Brazil (03-05°S; 38-35°W; between the States of Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte) under the framework of the project "Avaliação da biota bentônica e planctônica da Bacia Potiguar e Ceará (Bpot)", with samples collected from bottom trawls in the continental slope at depth ranging from 150-2068 m. Second, under the in the framework of the ABRACOS (Acoustic along the Brazilian coast), performed in 2015 and 2017 on seamounts and offshore areas in Northeast Brazil (Ceará Chain, Rio Grande do Norte and Rocas Atoll, Fernando de Noronha Archipelago and Pernambuco State), with samples with pelagic micronekton and mesopelagic nets, in depths ranging from 50-1260 m. We highlight the occurrence of 14 species of the family Acanthephyridae and 5 species of the family Oplophoridae, including the first occurrences of five species to Brazilian deep waters: Acanthephyra kingsleyi Spence Bate, 1888, Ephyrina ombango Crosnier & Forest, 1973, Meningodora compsa (Chace, 1940), M. longisulca Kikuchi, 1985 and Systellapsis curvispina Crosnier, 1987. These records increase the knowledge on deep-sea shrimps occurring in Southwestern Atlantic.
