The emergency excavation at Els Alters (L’Enova, Valencia) was carried out between the months of March through to June 2004, due to the planned construction of a stretch of the Madrid to Valencia high speed railway line. Thanks to the archaeological dig, a Roman villa constructed in the 1st century AD was unearthed. Inhabited without interruption until the 12th century AD, it was named Villa Cornelius because Publius Cornelius Iunianus was its proprietor. This rustic villa, concentrated on the exploitation and processing of flax, was found within the territorium of the city of Saetabis (Xativa) in the province of Tarraconensis. It was built on an alluvial plain intersected by the Via Augusta between the Sucro (Xuquer) river and its tributary, the Magre. The archaeological findings in this villa and its state of conservation make it one of the best examples of Roman era villas found in Valencia. Interdisciplinary studies have helped in interpreting the history of the site and its surrounding area. The results of studying these remains have been presented at various national and international conferences and have been published in articles and scientific monographs.
