Development and implementation of an off-line catalog card production system and an online shared cataloging system are described. In off-line production, average cost per card for 529, 893 catalog cards in finished form and alphabetized for filing was 6.57 cents. An account is given of system design and equipment selection for the online system. F...

Technical debt (TD) is an emergent area that has stimulated academic concern. Managers must have information about debt in order to balance time-to-market advantages and issues of TD. In addition, managers must have information about TD to plan payments. Development tasks such as designing, coding, and testing generate different sorts of TD, each o...

The focus of this report is to outline the current status of the multi-energy cataloging of solar energetic protons from the SOHO/ERNE instrument in solar cycles 23 and 24. Half of the energy channels provided by the high energy detector (HED) have been analyzed and the first results are presented here. The finalized event list (1996-2018) is plann...

Palavras-Chave: Indexação por assuntos; Catálogos coletivos; Controlo do vocabulário; Catálogos bibliográficos; OPAC; Sistemas de organização da informação Abstract This paper investigates the problem of subject indexing at the creation of integrated union library catalogs, more precisely, what happens in an electronic merging process with the terms entered in the content description fields. It seeks to acknowledge the state-of-the-art concerning the solutions found in the context of the information organization systems to value the investment in the use of subject terms in local catalogs at the creation/merger of union catalogs. We conclude that, in the absence of a model that can be applied uniformly to all projects, different solutions should be the result of a collective planning effort to implement an adequate set of measures. It is proposed a recommendation to the networks that will promote the creation of integrated union catalogs in Portugal.

This investigation shows that search keys derived from personal author names possess a sufficient degree of distinctness to be employed in an efficient computerized interactive index to a file of MARC II catalog records having 167,745 personal author entries.

INTRODUCTION Many words have been written on the subject of the Machine-Readable Cataloging (MARC) Program: the events that led to the pilot project, the development of the format, the operational Distribution Service, the influence of MARC on standardization, and the impetus it gave to library automation projects and to the creation of networks here and abroad. This article serves to gather together all aspects of the national and international MARC system. Much of what follows has been fairly well documented in many published reports, journal articles, etc., and therefore this article relies heavily on that material. A Bibliography based on the article's main headings has been included for those readers who wish to explore any aspect of MARC in greater depth.

A survey of current work on database systems is presented. The area is divided into three main sectors: data models, data languages and support for database operations. Data models are presented as the link between the database and the real world. Languages range from formal algebraic languages to attempts to use a dialogue in English to formulate queries. The support includes hardware for content addressing, database machines and software techniques for optimizing and evaluating group expressions. Mathematical models are used to organize this support. Throughout there is a tutorial component and evaluation, which in both cases is related to the application of database ideas to documentation.

Conventional approaches to processing records of linguistic origin for storage and retrieval tend to regard the data as immutable. The data generally exhibit great variety and disparate frequency distributions, which are largely ignored and which entail either the storage of extensive lists of items or the use of complex numerical algorithms such as hash coding. The results in each case are far from ideal. The variety-generator approach seeks to reflect the microstructure of data elements in their description for storage and search, and takes advantage of the consistency of statistical characteristics of data elements in homogeneous data bases. In this paper, the application of the variety-generator approach to the description of personal author names from the INSPEC data base by means of small sets of keys is detailed. It is shown that high degrees of partitioning of names can be obtained by key-sets generated from the initial characters of surnames, fmm the terminal characters of surnames, and from the initials. The implications of the findings for computer-based bibliographical informationsystems are discussed.

Two models of retrieval behavior of name/title-derived search keys in a large on-line library network system were studied. The results predicted by the two models were compared with results obtained from actual retrieval behavior of keys entered by users of the system. The findings of the study form the basis of recommendations to improve overall efficiency of the on-line system for its users.

A study was undertaken to determine the effectiveness of certain truncated-key structures in retrieving sets of bibliographic records that represent works authored by a single individual. The results show that a key of the form 4,3,1 retrieved one personal author name 98% of the time. A key of the same form retrieved one corporate author name 82% of the time. A stop-list is necessary to eliminate certain troublesome words in corporate names.

Emerging networks are classified in a variety of ways in current literature. The proposed framework distinguishes between computer, communication, and information networks and indicates how these three network types can be used to augment each other.

A brief profile of Janet Doe is given. Twenty-five years of library automation are reviewed from the author's point of view. Major projects such as the SUNY Biomedical Communication Network and the Regional Online Union Catalog of the Greater Midwest Regional Medical Library Network are discussed. Important figures in medical library automation are considered, as is the major role played by the National Library of Medicine.
