This series of papers addresses, for the first time, the synthesis, optimization, simulation and analysis of a controllable circuit breaker mechanism. The result of this design is a controllable residential circuit breaker that can be used in a residential load management scheme. This paper presents the motivation and background for this research,...

... The Computer Aided Home Energy Management System (CAHEMS) funded at West Virginia University by the Allegheny Power System implements this type of control scheme. The CAHEMS involves the control and sensing of the existing branch circuits in the house connected to the breaker panel (see Figure 1). The ability to control and sense these circuits was most easily accomplished by the use of controllable circuit breakers (CCBs) incorporating current sensors such as those developed by CAHEMS [16]. ...

The analysis of degrees of freedom(DOF) of a moving platform is the fundamental problem in kinematics of parallel mechanism. However, many problems should be considered to correctly perform the DOF calculation by using the traditional DOF criterion, and it is difficult to find a DOF criterion suitable for all kinds of mechanisms. A rule that can be...

The goal of this article is to present a number synthesis method for the self-adapting upper-limb rehabilitation exoskeletons. The human joint kinematics and the variability of joint axes around their supposed locations were analyzed; the axes misalignments caused by the wearing error and the movement coupling between joint rotations and axes motio...

... Dimensional synthesis and optimization seek to determine the significant dimensions and the starting position of a mechanism of preconceived type and prescribed performance [2]. The mechanism's 'prescribed performance defined in the problem definition and its preconceived type determined through type synthesis were presented in part I [8] of this study. ...

This paper is the second of a series of three papers which addresses the synthesis of a controllable circuit breaker. It presents the dimensional synthesis and optimization phase of the synthesis problem. In the dimensional synthesis, the equality and inequality constraints were determined and the variable types assigned. The specified design space was then searched to see if any solutions existed. Once a mechanism: was found to have a solution in the design space, an optimization was performed to determine which of the mechanism configurations was optimal with respect to the criteria of desirability using a modified McArthur's exploratory Monte Carlo method.
