Renal stones are solid deposits formed from minerals and salts that develop within the kidneys and urinary tract. While the condition is more common among adults, children and even infants can also be affected. There is an increasing incidence of paediatric renal stones in Africa alongside multiple challenges faced in managing the condition. This scoping review aimed to provide an overview of the management modalities of paediatric renal stones in Africa. This study utilised Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) checklist. A systematic search was conducted in three electronic databases: PubMed, African Journal Online (AJOL), and Google Scholar, with 1,180 articles curated. After extensive examination, 10 articles satisfied the inclusion criteria. The review found that calcium oxalate stones were the most prevalent type, accounting for 34.03% of cases, followed by whewellite stones and ammonium urate stones. The most frequent location for stones was the kidney, and the most common symptom was pain. Abdominopelvic ultrasound was the most frequently utilised investigation. Of the 886 patients managed for renal stones, 75.4% were managed surgically, 2.9% medically, and 21.7% spontaneously resolved without intervention. This review identifies opportunities for improving the management of paediatric renal stones in Africa, including the need for standardised diagnostic and treatment protocols and the development of evidence-based guidelines tailored to the African context. Overall, this scoping review provides valuable insights into the patterns and management of paediatric renal stones in Africa and highlights the need for further research to improve the management of this condition in the region.

Objectives: Urinary tract stones are less common in children than in adults. Determining the etiology is the most important step to achieve successful treatment and prevent future recurrence. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical characteristics and possible risk factors for urinary stone disease in pediatric patients. Methods: The data of 126 patients with urinary stone disease who were treated in a pediatric nephrology clinic between 2000 and 2014 were analyzed retrospectively. A total 126 patients were enrolled in the study: 70 (55%) male and 56 (45%) female patients were included. The complaints, age of diagnosis, family histories, and stone location were examined. Direct urine microscopic examination, complete urinalysis, and urine culture were performed for all of the patients. Calcium, uric acid, oxalate, citrate, magnesium, and cystine levels were measured in urine collected in a 24-hour period. Serum electrolyte, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, calcium, phosphorus, uric acid, and albumin levels were measured. Urinary ultrasound was performed. Stone analysis was conducted using the X-ray diffraction method. The mean age of the patients was 55 months (range: 1-162 months) at presentation. Results: In all, 34% of the patients had a family history of urinary stone disease. The rate of previous urinary tract infection was 26%. It was determined that 34% of the patients had been taking vitamin D and 5% had been taking a high dose. Metabolic risk factors determined were: hypercalciuria in 41%, hypocitraturia in 30%, hyperoxaluria in 14%, hyperuricosuria in 10%, and cystinuria in 5%. Among the group, 81% of the patients had kidney stones, 6.5% had ureter stones, and 2.5% had bladder stones. Furthermore, it was determined that 45% of the stones were composed of calcium oxalate, 35% had calcium phosphate stones, 14.2% had uric acid stones, and 13.3% had cystine stones. In 52% of the cases, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy was performed, and 71% underwent surgical treatment. Conclusion: Metabolic evaluation and stone analysis should be performed to prevent future recurrences in children with urinary stone disease and lifelong follow-up should be emphasized.

Objectives Urolithiasis is rare in children, but the incidence has increased over the past few decades. This study aims at describing the clinical and biochemical characteristics, etiology, and treatment of urolithiasis in children. Methods This was a retrospective study of all children under 16 years of age seen at the Bordeaux University Children's Hospital with a diagnosis of urolithiasis. The diagnosis was confirmed either radiologically or clinically by the expulsion of the stone. Results A total of 186 children with a diagnosis of urolithiasis between 1994 and 2012 were included. The median age at diagnosis was 7.4 years. The male-to-female ratio was 1.9. The estimated annual incidence was around 5.5/100,000 children under 15 years of age in the past 5 years. The main presenting feature was nonspecific abdominal pain (71%). Metabolic calculi accounted for 48% of the patients with idiopathic hypercalciuria as the main cause. Genetic diseases accounted for 15% of cases. The proportion of infectious calculi was estimated at 33% and decreased in the past two decades. Stone fragments were sent for analysis in 86 children, and calcium oxalate was the major component (37%), followed by calcium phosphate (33%), purine (9%), and struvite (8%). At least 26% of patients experienced recurrence of stone passage. Conclusion This retrospective study highlighted changes in characteristics of pediatric urolithiasis over time. Childhood-onset urolithiasis requires complete etiological work-up so that a metabolic cause with a high risk of recurrence does not go unrecognized.

The aim of this study is to test the efficacy of different fractions of Aerva lanata extract for their antimicrobial activity and analyze the influence of fractions on the virulent factors of microorganisms. The whole plant Aerva lanata (L) Juss.Ex. Schlt, commonly known as Pashanabheda used by various Ayurvedic physicians for various diseased conditions traditionally. As this plant is widely available in Western Ghats and no scientific reports on the antimicrobial potency of the plant fraction/s reported till date, we have conducted this study with an objective that the results will enlarge the existing knowledge. In this study the whole plant was subjected for extraction with hydroalcohol followed by fractionation with different solvents based on their polarities. Urolithiasis is found to be one among the top five critical conditions responsible for urinary tract infections worldwide and as this plant is used as Pashanabheda traditionally, we are aimed at identifying the antimicrobial potency of this plant which shall help to substantiate the traditional claims of this plant in nurolithiasis treatment. In this present study Aerva lanata (L), the whole plant commonly known as Pashanabheda, which is used by various Ayurvedic physicians traditionally for various diseases and widely available in Western Ghat is selected. The whole plant is subjected to extraction with hydro alcohol (ethanol 90%) followed by fractionation with different solvents based on their polarities such as Petroleum ether, Dichloromethane, Ethyl acetate and n-Butanol. Background Recent studies have reported an increasing prevalence of stone diseases (urolithiasis and cholelithiasis) worldwide. However, studies that evaluate the occurrence of stone diseases in Ethiopia are scarce. The objective of this study was to determine trends in the incidence of stone diseases, and the associated comorbidities in Ethiopia during the last 13 years. Methods Thirteen years retrospective data were collected from medical records (Log Books and Electronic Databases) at St. Paulos Tertiary Referral Hospital, September 2005/2006 to 2017/2018. A total of 32,370 surgically treated patients were included in the study. Open surgical treatments related to stone diseases were identified via a thorough review of patient medical records.
