... and simulation tools are extensively used in optical component design, telecommunication applications and system study. Their use often helps in better understanding of system operation, reduced system realisation time and low cost of manufacturing. Optical sensors such as fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) consists of discrete optical components with each component working in certain way that affects the overall performance of the system. The FOG is a Sagnac interferometer [ 1] consisting of light source, detector, coupler, polariser, phase modulator and fiber optic sensor coil as shown in fig. 1. The commercially available FOG comes with varying specifications determined by its application. The development of FOG for a specific application requires system study including the functioning of each component and their integration. A simulation tool has been developed for FOG using the MATLAB software. It can be used for designing a gyroscope and also for conversion of gyro output into rotation rate information. In the simulation model, each optical component is treated as a black box having N input and M output ports [2], mathematically represented by a transfer function connecting output with its input. The wavelength of light, its initial phase, amplitude and refractive index of transmission medium etc. are the initial simulation parameters. The black box of all the optical components are interconnected in the same way as Sagnac interferometer shown in ...
