Classification of Lexical Processing Strategies Based on Top-down and Bottom-up Cognitive Processes Based on Figure 1, the different lexical processing strategies can be categorized into two groups according to the cognitive approach involved. Bottom-up lexical processing strategies consist of two parts: consulting a dictionary or other people, and inferring word meanings based on the linguistic features of the word. Inferring word meanings based on non-linguistic factors and ignoring neologisms belong to the top-down lexical processing strategies.
