The evergreen carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua) is considered one of the oldest trees in the world, cultivated since ancient times in the Mediterranean Basin, for its edible and high nutritional fruits, adapted to human and animal consumption. Spain is the main producer, followed by Italy, Portugal, Greece, Morocco, and Turkey. In Italy, the cultivation of carob is concentrated in a few provinces and insists on an area of more than 5,500 hectares. In this work 19 accessions, showing interesting fruit traits were analysed morphologically and genetically. Overall, 13 quantitative characters were considered regarding leaf (5 characters), pod (5) and seed (3). To investigate the genetic diversity 8 fluorescently labelled SSR primers were used, indicated as polymorphic in the literature. A UPGMA dendrogram was constructed to depict identity cases and relationships among the accessions. Clustering showed discrimination among accessions from Eastern and Western Sicily. The morphological characterisation does not clearly discriminate any of the cultivars recognized by the growers, similarly, the molecular analysis showed a reduced level of diversity. Since most of these local accessions are of unknown origin and that they are representative of the local germplasm they still warrant protection for their economic and environmental value.
... The Centaurea busambarensis group as delimited by Domina et al. (2017) is made up by eight species endemic to Sicily (central Mediterranean). It is included in what has been called the C. cineraria aggregate, a group of perennial herbs characterised by a white or grey indumentum, pinnatisect leaves, phyllaries with a decurrent scarious appendage and flexible fimbriae and pink tubular florets. ...

... The studied material and its collection localities are reported in Table 1 and Fig. 1. For the statistical analysis, specimens of the population of Centaurea from Rocche del Crasto were newly collected, voucher specimens being deposited in PAL and PAL-Gr; data published in Domina et al. (2017) for the other specimens of the Centaurea busambarensis complex were used. The methodology is the same as in Domina et al. (2017): 10 measurements were taken for each quantitative character of at least 10 different plants and five from Pizzolungo, given the small population (Suppl. ...

The Centaurea busambarensis group is made up by eight species endemic to Sicily. We statistically evaluated a population found on the Nebrodi Mountain (NE Sicily) to verify if the observed morphological differences with the already known taxa justified the description of a new one. It resulted in being sufficiently distinct to deserve recognition at the species level. Centaurea valdemonensis , a new species endemic to Sicily is described and illustrated here. It is confined to the Nebrodi Mountains (NE Sicily). The distinction of this taxon from the others belonging to the C. busambarensis complex has been supported with the aid of statistical analyses on morphological characters. The differences with the related taxa are discussed.

(10,779 total CWR and/or WHP taxa belonging to 7,128 species) (Landucci et al. 2014) when looking at the taxa, but higher when considering the species. This is due to the new and different species delimitation adopted in the updated checklist of Italy Galasso et al. 2018) and to the increased knowledge of plant taxonomy in recent years (e.g., Astuti et al. 2017;Domina, Greuter, and Raimondo 2017;Giovino et al. 2020). ...

Wild harvested plants (WHP) and crop wild relatives (CWR), part of the segment of natural diversity that is collectively known as ‘Plant Genetic Resources’, have great socioeconomic importance for humans because they are used either directly or in crop breeding. In order to lay down a solid base for constructing conservation strategies for Italy, an updated annotated list of CWR and WHP was produced for the country including information on known uses. Taxa included in the list were then prioritized using a pragmatic approach based on their value, native status, and need of protection or monitoring.

Each character was also subjected to univariate analysis (analysis of variance or Kruskal-Wallis test with corrections for multiple comparisons, Pearson correlation coefficients, Tukey's HSD, honestly significant difference, test and Bonferroni, respectively), using PAST version 4.03 (Hammer et al. 2001;Hammer 2020). ...

Morphological and genetic variation of Chamaerops humilis (Arecaceae) in relation to the altitude. Caryologia, Just Accepted. Morphological and genetic variation of Chamaerops humilis (Arecaceae) in relation to the altitude Abstract The Mediterranean dwarf palm (Chamaerops humilis L.) is native to Western and Central Mediterranean. Since classical times this species has been cultivated and several varieties have been described on material of unknown origins. In this study, plants grown from seeds collected in the wild from seven populations spread along the Mediterranean basin were cultivated under the same environmental conditions, investigated morphologically and genetically by screening the polymorphism of ten SSR loci. Two groups are clearly separated, the populations growing at low altitudes and those living above a thousand meters of altitude. Due to morphological, geographic and environmental isolation, here it is proposed to discriminate the populations growing at high altitude on the Moroccan High Atlas and Anti-Atlas as a distinct subspecies.
... Centaurea, a section widespread in the Mediterranean area, a quite critical group distributed mainly in the Tyrrhenian territories (Central Mediterranean) corresponding to the C. cineraria Linnaeus species complex is studied here. This group was previously investigated by several authors (Sommier 1894, Béguinot 1905, Lacaita 1915, Cela Renzoni & Viegi 1982, Palla et al. 2005, Bancheva et al. 2006, Hilpold et al. 2011, Guarino et al. 2013, Domina et al. 2015, 2016, 2017 due to its complexity. Currently, the following species are included in this group: C. cineraria Linnaeus (1753: 912), C. gymnocarpa Moris & De Notaris (1839: 132), C. busambarensis Gussone (1845: 873), C. papposa (Cosson, 1851: 136) Greuter (2003: 55), C. aeolica Gussone ex Lojacono (1903: 136), C. veneris (Sommier 1894: 88) Béguinot in Béguinot & Landi (1931: 90), C. leucadea Lacaita (1925: 105), C. panormitana Lojacono (1903: 137) (= C. ucriae Lacaita 1915: 244), C. pandataria (Fiori & Béguinot in Fiori 1904a: 334) Béguinot (1905: 443), C. todaroi Lacaita (1915: 245), C. tyrrhena Brullo et al. In the course of a taxonomical revision of Centaurea aeolica and the closely related C. pandataria, species confined to the Aeolian Archipelago (N Sicily) and Ventotene island (Pontian Archipelago, Latium) respectively, we describe a new species, named C. phalacrica, occurring on coastal metamorphic rocks near Messina (NE Sicily). These three species, well differentiated in several features, are examined from morphological, nomenclatural, chorological, and ecological points of view. For each species, a detailed iconography, consideration on their conservation status and identification keys are provided too. The lectotype of C. pandataria kept in the Florence Herbarium (FI) is designated.

The conservation, fruition and management of landscape and natural resources is one of the most important topic of the moment. Here we presented a study on naturalistic hotspots that can be found along the Itinerarium Rosaliae, a naturalistic and religious route in Sicily that crosses three natural reserves and one natural regional park connecting Mount Pellegrino with the Hermitage of Santo Stefano di Quisquina. On the whole 7 semi-natural woods, 13 monumental trees, 8 geosites, and 4 areas of high naturalistic interest were identified. This initiative can be of example for other territories where human and natural heritage can be connected for an organic network of fruition.

A multidisciplinary approach for the assessment of the environmental quality of the Sicilian coast is presented. This approach can be adopted for any Mediterranean coastline. The territory was divided into elementary areas and for each of them we reported the most important taxa, belonging to fauna and vascular, bryophytic and algal flora, from a biogeographic point of view in order to evaluate punctual and general levels of biodiversity conservation. The comparative analysis showed that the main ircumsicilian islands and the carbonate promontories of the Tyrrhenian coast present the highest degree of biodiversity. The coastal lagoons located in the south-eastern Sicily, even though characterized by a lower number of taxa, are also interesting areas deserving top priority in conservation plans.

Critical species inventories provide primary biodiversity data crucial for biogeographical, ecological, and conservation studies. After six years, a second update to the inventory of the vascular flora native to Italy is presented. It provides details on the occurrence at regional level and, for the first time, floristic data for San Marino. The checklist includes 8,241 species and subspecies, distributed in 1,111 genera and 153 families; 23 taxa are lycophytes, 108 ferns and fern allies, 30 gymnosperms, and 8,080 angiosperms. The species/subspecies endemic to Italy are 1,702, grouped in 71 families and 312 genera. The taxa currently occurring in Italy are 7,591, while 545 taxa have not been confirmed in recent times, 94 are doubtfully occurring in the country, 11 are data deficient, and 236 are reported by mistake and to be excluded at national level. Out of the 545 not confirmed taxa, 28 are considered extinct or possibly extinct.
