Presently, there are a lot of observations on the significant impact of strong remote earthquakes on underground water and local seismicity. Teleseismic wave trains of strong earthquakes give rise to several hydraulic effects in boreholes, namely permanent water level changes and water level oscillations, which closely mimic the seismograms (hydros...

... Nowadays, the probabilistic method to assess slope stability is not applied in Russian codes, but only used in research work. For the studied slope, the following probabilistic analyses were achieved: 1) without seismic effect; 2) with seismic effect based on pseudostatic analysis; 3) with seismic effect considering earthquake ground motion (8 intensity point − acceleration 200 cm/s 2 , selecting motion data of the Racha (1991) and Sochi (2004) earthquakes [16,17]). ...

This study sought to assess the probabilistic stability of slope analysis under seismic conditions in the middle of the Mzymta River Valley in Russia's Greater Sochi. In probabilistic analysis, almost all input parameters can be assigned a probability distribution; however, the seismic coefficient probability distribution has been difficult to define in previous studies. This study aims to assign a probability distribution to the seismic coefficient based on seismogram acceleration distribution. The study showed that seismogram-based probabilistic analysis is a feasible way to assess slope stability.

As regards the regions selected for analysis, despite continuous studies of the characteristics of the strong ground motions at the North Caucasus (Pavlenko 2008(Pavlenko , 2009(Pavlenko , 2016Pavlenko and Pavlenko 2016) and at the Kamchatka Peninsula (Gusev et al. 1997;Petukhin et al. 1999;Chubarova et al. 2010), regional GMPEs have not been developed yet. In such instances, a common practice is to adopt the GMPEs developed for other regions with similar tectonic properties (e.g. ...

This study examines the effect of the procedures used in three different probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) methods for estimating the rates of exceedance of ground motion. To evaluate the effect of these procedures, the Cornell–McGuire and Parametric-Historic methods, and the method based on Monte Carlo simulations are employed, and the seismic source model, based on spatially smoothed seismicity, is used in the calculations. Two regions in Russia were selected for comparison, and seismic hazard maps were prepared for return periods of 475 and 2475 years. The results indicate that the choice of a particular method for conducting PSHA has relatively little effect on the hazard estimates. The Cornell–McGuire method yielded the highest estimates, with the two other methods producing slightly lower estimates. The variation among the results based on the three methods appeared to be virtually independent of the return period. The variation in the results for the Sochi region was within 6%, and that for the Kamchatka region was within 10%. Accordingly, the considered PSHA methods would provide closely related results for areas of moderate seismic activity; however, the difference among the results would apparently increase with an increase in seismic activity.

A very strong difference in accelerograms is dem onstrated for the typical earthquakes in Kamchatka and the Northern Caucasus related to the differences in the regional characteristics of emission and propa gation of seismic waves. The strong scatter of peak accelerations and the parameters of oscillation dura tion does not allow us to apply the simple relations of the correlation between the seismic intensity and peak acceleration over the entire territory of Russia. The duration of oscillations should also be taken into account. Mapping of the seismic intensity in the form of the seismic intensity numbers chart realized in the OSR97 charts is correct, but in order to construct the zoning charts in peak accelerations, it is necessary to study in detail the regional peculiarities of the emis sion and propagation of the seismic waves over the entire territory of Russia. The account for the regional peculiarities of the emission and propagation of seismic waves is neces sary for the construction industry in seismic regions and the study of these peculiarities is important for such a big country as Russia. Accelerograms of earth quakes can also be different in seismic regions located far from each other, which differ in their geological and tectonic structure. The level of seismic hazard on the territory of the Russian Federation is characterized in the charts of seismic zoning OSR97A, B, and C. The charts reflect the seismic intensity, and the probability that it can be exceeded within 50 years is 10% (OSR97A), 5% (OSR97B), and 1% (OSR97C). According to the OSR97 charts, the main seismic regions in Russia

The dynamic parameters of the sources of 44 earthquakes in the North Caucasus were determined from the amplitude spectra of S-waves for the period 2018–2019 with an energy class according to T.G. Rautian scale KR=9.1–14.1. Earthquake records from regional digital seismic stations of the North Caucasus network, with epicentral distances of no more than 300 km were used for the calculation. The source spectra were calculated based on the frequency-dependent quality factor Q(f) for earthquakes in the North Caucasus western zone – Q(f)=90f 1.02 – and eastern zone – Q(f)=97f 0.89 . The SEISAN program was used for the spectral analysis of 31 earthquakes. The following values were obtained: 0 – spectral density, f0 – corner frequency, M0 – scalar seismic moment, Mw – moment magnitude, L – length of the rupture at the source of an earthquake, or r – radius of the circular area,  – stress drop. Relationships between lgM0 and KR and Mw and KR are obtained.

The source spectral and dynamic parameters for 39 earthquakes with KR=10.0–13.8 occurred in the North Caucasus for 2016–2017 are given. The parameters were determined from S-wave amplitude spectra. Records of four regional digital seismic stations («Anapa», «Kislovodsk», «Makhachkala» and «Sochi») located no more than 300 km from the sources were used. The values of the frequency-dependent quality factor Q(f) for the environment near these stations were obtained earlier. This is necessary to take into account the attenuation of S-wave energy in the Earth's crust and upper mantle in order to recalculate the station spectra into the source spectra. In 2016–2017, most of the studied earthquakes were located in the Eastern Caucasus. For the first time, for western zone earthquakes recorded by a network of stations (N=4–7), the SEISAN program was applied and satisfactory results were obtained when compared with the Crimean data for the Kerch-Kuban zone.

––To obtain realistic and correct estimates of strong ground motion in the area of construction of the second Severomuisk tunnel, the records of local earthquakes obtained by the Severomuisk seismic station (SVKR) in 2005–2010 are studied (magnitudes Mb of ~4.2–5.5, hypocentral distances r of ~15–220 km). Stochastic-simulation methods are used to estimate the regional parameters of radiation and propagation of seismic waves in northeastern Buryatia: the stress parameter Δσ, shapes of source spectra, wave attenuation at high frequencies (k), parameters defining the shape and duration of the acceleration time history, etc. Beforehand, the duration of strong motion as a function of the hypocentral distance was evaluated from the records; the local site amplification A(f) was estimated based on the velocity structure of the region; and the envelope method was applied to estimate the quality function Q(f). The following data were obtained: Δσ ≈ 100 bars; k ≈ 0.012 s; Q(f) as ~60 f1.05 for r of ~15–30 km, ~80 f1.0 for r of ~40–60 km, ~90 f0.9 for r of ~100–110 km, and ~150 f0.7 for r of ~160–220 km; geometris spreading as 1/r for r <50 km, 1/50 for 50 < r <150 km, and 1/r0.5 for r >150 km; and duration as 0 for 0 < r < 5 km, 0.222r for 5 < r < 50 km, and 10 + 0.015r for r > 50 km. These estimates can be used to predict ground motion parameters during future strong earthquakes in the region.

The dynamic sources parameters of 29 earthquakes of the North Caucasus for 2015 with KR=9.5–11.4, determined from 38 S-wave amplitude spectra are analyzed. Records of four regional digital seismic stations, “Anapa”, “Kislovodsk”, “Makhachkala” and “Sochi”, located no more than 300 km from the sources are used. For the environment near these stations, the values of the frequency-dependent Q-factor, necessary for recalculating the station spectra to the focal ones. In 2015, the majority of earthquakes studied were located in the Eastern Caucasus. The dependence between log M0 and KR for this zone was constructed using together with the data for 2010–2014.

Dynamic sources parameters of 21 earthquakes of the North Caucasus for 2014 with КР=9.5–11.5, determined from 44 S-wave amplitude spectra are analyzed. Records of three regional digital seismic stations, “Anapa”, “Kislovodsk” and “Sochi”, located no more than 300 km from the sources are used. For the environment near these stations, the values of the frequency-dependent Q-factor, necessary for recalculating the station spectra to the focal ones, were obtained earlier by O.V. Pavlenko. In 2014, the majority of earthquakes studied were located in the Eastern Caucasus. The dependence between log M0 and КР for this zone was constructed using the data for 2010–2013. Compared to the similar equation for the entire Caucasus (Riznichenko et all., 1976), this dependence is in a good agreement with respect to the free term, but differs by the slope.

The dynamic parameters of of 18 earthquakes sources in the North Caucasus for 2013 with КР=10.0–12.9, determined from 64 amplitude spectra of S-waves are given. Records of three regional digital seismic sta-tions, “Anapa”, “Kislovodsk” and “Sochi” are used. They are located no more than 300 km from the sources. The records of the “Makhachkala” station were used in a test mode. For the environment near these stations, the values of the frequency-dependent Q-factor, necessary for recalculating the station spectra to the focal ones, were obtained earlier. In 2013, the largest number of studied earthquakes was located in the Eastern Caucasus. The dependence of log M0 and КР for this zone was established with use of the data ob-tained in 2010–2013. Compared to the similar equation of world average dependence (Riznichenko, 1976), our dependence is in a good agreement with it by the slope, but the free term exceeds the same in the world average dependence by almost two units.
