... initially straight thin-walled beam with an open cross-section, arbitrary restrained at the ends, is considered ( Fig.1). A model is developed which is accurate enough to describe the behavior of a slender channel section beam undergoing large motions, but at the same time, rather simple to make it possible a mechanical interpretation of the main contributions in the equations of motion. ...

Aim of the present paper is to study the effects of nonlinear warping and torsional elongation on the nonlinear response of a channel section cantilever beam. A model is developed under the condition that torsional curvature is greater of flexural curvatures and a great simplification is obtained with respect to a previous model of the same Authors. Through Hamilton principle, three equations of motion are derived describing dynamics of inextensional and shear undeformable nonlinear 3D beam. A Galerkin discretization is performed by using the first three eigenfunctions. Comparison between the analytical model and a nonlinear FE model, based on shell elements, is carried out to validate the mechanical model. An experimental test is also expected in the next future.
