... inornata is similar to B. coprodes in the pigmentation of the proper exciple and hypothecium as well as conidium shape. B. inornata can be distinguished, however, on account of the tuberculate apothecia (Fig. 3C), thinner hymenium, more red-brown and less green pigment in the epihymenium (Fig. 4D), narrower ascospores, and (when present) sessile to stipitate pycnidia. Ascospores are poorly developed in the type material, which is probably why Nylander (1874) incorrectly described the ascospores as acicular and 32-36 × 1-1.5 μm. In the ...

We present taxonomic, distributional and ecological notes on Fennoscandian crustose lichens and lichenicolous fungi, based on new collections as well as revision of herbarium material. Two new combinations are proposed: Frutidella furfuracea comb. nov. for F. pullata and Puttea duplex comb. nov. for Fellhanera duplex. Lecidea byssoboliza, L. carneoglauca and Variolaria torta are all reduced to synonymy with Bacidia antricola, Bacidia invertens is synonymized with B. igniarii, B. atrolivida with Mycobilimbia tetramera, and Gyalidea fruticola with Thelenella pertusariella. A new description is provided for Micarea hylocomii. 25 species of lichens and lichenicolous fungi are reported as new to Finland, Norway and/or Sweden: Absconditella lignicola (Norway), Bacidia antricola (Norway), B. polychroa (Norway), B. pycnidata (Sweden), Bacidina adastra (Sweden), Biatora veteranorum (Norway), Briancoppinsia cytospora (Finland), Catillaria scotinodes (Norway), Cliostomum subtenerum (Norway), Dirina fallax (Sweden), Fellhaneropsis almquistiorum (Norway), Gyalidea subscutellaris (Sweden), Lecania inundata (Norway), L. suavis (Norway), Micarea capitata (Norway), M. deminuta (Norway), M. hylocomii (Sweden), M. lynceola (Sweden), M. soralifera (Sweden), M. subconfusa (Sweden), Mycoblastus sanguinarioides (Finland, Sweden), Paralecia pratorum (Sweden), Puttea duplex (Sweden), Sarcogyne algoviae (Finland) and Toninia subnitida (Norway). Lectotypes are designated for Bacidia antricola, Lecidea byssoboliza, Lecidea carneoglauca, Lecidea subconfusa and Lecidea submoestula.

It appears to be the common member of the B. coprodes group in eastern North America, although B. coprodes (Körber) Lettau is known from the Black Hills (Ekman 2014 . Specimens are referred here somewhat tentatively and based largely on morphology-particularly by the presence of immersed, rounded to somewhat irregularly shaped apothecia with colorless hypothecia-, as diagnostic tests for elachista-brown and cinereorufa-green discussed for the species by Bungartz et al. (2007) frequently yield inconclusive results for our material, and norstictic acid is recovered only sporadically. ...

A total of 154 lichens, four lichenicolous fungi, and one allied fungus were collected by the authors from 2004 to 2015 from Pipestone National Monument (PNM), in Pipestone County, on the Prairie Coteau of southwestern Minnesota. Twelve additional species collected by previous researchers, but not found by the authors, bring the total number of taxa known for PNM to 171. This represents a substantial increase over previous reports for PNM, likely due to increased intensity of field work, and also to the marked expansion of corticolous and anthropogenic substrates since the site was first surveyed in 1899. Reexamination of 116 vouchers deposited in MIN and the PNM herbarium led to the exclusion of 48 species previously reported from the site. Crustose lichens are the most common growth form, comprising 65% of the lichen diversity. Sioux Quartzite provided substrate for 43% of the lichen taxa collected. Saxicolous lichen communities were characterized by sampling four transects on cliff faces and low outcrops. An annotated checklist of the lichens of the site is provided, as well as a list of excluded taxa. We report 24 species (including 22 lichens and two lichenicolous fungi) new for Minnesota: Acarospora boulderensis, A. contigua, A. erythrophora, A. strigata, Agonimia opuntiella, Arthonia clemens, A. muscigena, Aspicilia americana, Bacidina delicata, Buellia tyrolensis, Caloplaca flavocitrina, C. lobulata, C. soralifera, Candelariella antennaria, Dermatocarpon arenosaxi, Diplotomma subdispersa, Endocarpon pallidulum, Enterographa osagensis, Pseudosagedia chlorotica, Psoroglaena dictyospora, Punctelia missouriensis, Verrucaria calkinsiana, V. furfuracea, and V. sphaerospora. In addition, we report Acarospora erythrophora new for Kansas and Oklahoma, Enterographa osagensis new for Nebraska and South Dakota, and Pseudosagedia chlorotica new for Oklahoma.

... Fellhaneropsis almquistiorum can, however, be confused with members of the Bacidia coprodes group, Micarea marginata Coppins & Muhr, and possibly members of the Fellhanera silicis group. The B. coprodes group (Ekman 2014) belongs in the Ramalinaceae and its members possess an ascus with a conical axial body surrounded by a diffuse, somewhat darker amyloid zone. Green pigment is usually abundant in the apothecia (except in B. inornata), and this pigment corresponds to Bagliettoanagreen (purplish reaction with HCl). ...

Fellhaneropsis almquistiorum S. Ekman, a lichenized ascomycete in the family Pilocarpaceae (Lecanorales, Lecanoromycetes) is described as new to science. It is characterized by the thin and filmy crustose thallus, small photobiont, apothecia with a yellowish to black disk and well developed black margin that becomes excluded with age, dark green and brown pigmentation in the proper exciple and hypothecium, a hymenium without pigment or with some green and brown pigment, more or less fusiform and 3-septate ascospores, abundant black pycnidia, and long and filiform conidia. The species is currently known from central Sweden and central Germany, where it inhabits shaded and acid to neutral rocks with few competing lichens. Historical records were all misidentified as Bacidia coprodes or any of its synonyms or misapplied names. Some specimens of F. almquistiorum contain a previously unrecorded pigment, tentatively named here Almquistiorum-yellow. This pigment is intensely golden yellow in water, does not react with KOH and fades with the addition of HCl or HNO3. A key to all known, pycnidiate members of Fellhaneropsis is provided.

During a study of the incompletely known lichen flora of the Caucasus, we analyzed 237 specimens of corticolous Bacidia s. str. collected in the Northern and Southern Caucasus, including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Russia. Of these, 54 specimens belonging to 11 species of Bacidia s. str. were selected for molecular studies, representing the observed morphological variability of the genus. We obtained 142 sequences from three RNA-coding genes (nrITS, nrLSU, and mtSSU) and two protein-coding genes ( RPB 1 and RPB 2). The single and concatenated datasets were complemented with Bacidia s. str. sequences from GenBank and subjected to Bayesian inference and two maximum likelihood analyses (RAxML and IQ-TREE). The resulting trees yielded highly concordant topologies of the groups and corresponded with previous results, supporting two main clades correlating with apothecia pigmentation. Our analyses are the first to reveal the presence of Bacidia heterochroa in the Caucasus. An exceptionally high degree of morphological plasticity was found in the Rubella and Suffusa groups. As a result of morphological examination and phylogenetic results, B. caucasica (Suffusa group) was described as new to science. Furthermore, two putative taxa in the Rubella group, Bacidia inconspicua ined. and B. maritima ined., were introduced. This study furthers our understanding and documentation of the understudied lichen flora of the Caucasus, bringing the total number of Bacidia species for the region to 13.

Bilimbia fuscoviridis (≡ Bacidia fuscoviridis) is newly reported from North America where it is shown to be widespread in the temperate eastern United States and adjacent Canada, frequently occurring on shaded calcareous rocks and siliceous rocks in humid habitats near waterways. A detailed description on the basis of North American material is provided, the distribution is mapped, and color photographs are provided. The species is likely common but overlooked because of its inconspicuous appearance and the absence of diagnostic secondary metabolites.

The monograph presents the results of generalization and critical analysis of data accumulated over the 240-year history of lichen studies on the territory of modern Belarus, including the author's original materials. As a result of the work, 722 species of lichens and lichenicolous fungi are accepted for the territory of the country, of which two species are described by the author as new to science, 78 species are reported for the first time for Belarus. 99 species are excluded from the list of lichen biota. Taxonomical, geographical, biomorphological and ecological-substrate analyzes of the lichen biota of Belarus were carried out for the first time. All the main features and trends in the dynamics of lichen species diversity are identified and characterized. A system of life forms of lichens of forest communities is proposed.
