Three new species of the amphipod family Aoridae Stebbing, 1899 were collected from the bottom of a 40400 m depth in Sagami Bay, central Japan. Aora biarticulata sp. nov. is characterized by the accessory flagellum with 2 articles, the weakly setose male gnathopod 1 and the male gnathopod 2 with setose carpus and propodus. Aoroides sagamiensis sp. nov. has a distinctive male gnathopod 1 with poorly setose basis and heavily setose merus. Grandidierella gracilis sp. nov. has stridulating ridges on the carpus of the male gnathopod 1. This new species can be distinguished from its related congeners by the teeth arrangement on the male gnathopod 1 carpus, the poorly setose antennae, the sparsely setose posterior margins of the pereopods 6, 7 bases, and the ordinary form of the male gnathopod 2.

Two new species of the aorid Amphipoda are described from Chichijima Island, the Ogasawara Islands in Japan. Aoroides macrops sp. nov. from shallow water is characterized by the heavily setose male gnathopod 1, the coxa of which bears several plumose setae anteriorly, and the uropod 2 with a short inter-ramal process. This species is very similar to A. longimerus Ren and Zheng, 1996; however, this new species can be distinguished from A. longimerus by the larger eyes, the shorter carpus of the male gnathopod 1, and the shorter carpi of the pereopods 3 and 4. Grandidierella ogasawarensis sp. nov. from river mouth has the male gnathopod 1 with two teeth on the carpus and an anterodistal projection on the propodus, the male gnathopod 2 with an elongate carpus, and the uropod 1 bearing an inter-ramal process. This new species is different from its closely related congeners (G. koa Barnard, 1977; G. insulae Myers, 1981; and G. rubroantennata Ariyama and Taru, 2017) in the separated teeth on the carpus of the male gnathopod 1.

On 9 October 2020 the Pacific amphipod Aoroides longimerus was collected in the Veerse Meer in the southwestern delta area of the Netherlands. On 23 October 2020 more specimens were collected, together with the Pacific amphipod Ericthonius didymus. These are the first records of these species from Europe north of France. Both species were identified using morphological characters as well as molecular methods. The Oosterschelde is an area with shellfish culture and recreational boating. As the specimens were collected of a pontoon in a marina, recreational vessels may have been the introduction vector. Ecological effects of the introductions are not obvious. A phenomenon that does become more and more obvious is the large and quickly growing proportion of exotic species in the delta area of the Netherlands.

Among these crustaceans, seven were amphipods: Caprella mutica Shurin, 1935, Cryptorchestia cavimana (Heller, 1865, Dikerogammarus villosus (Sowinsky, 1894), Grandidierella japonica (Stephensen, 1938), Monocorophium acherusicum (Costa, 1853), Monocorophium sextonae (Crawford, 1937), and Platorchestia platensis (Krøyer, 1845). A further eight more species had the potential to be recorded in the future in Normandy waters, viz., Aoroides curvipes Ariyama, 2004, Aoroides longimerus Ren and Zheng, 1996, Aoroides semicurvatus Ariyama, 2004, Chelicorophium curvispinum (G.O. Two Pacific amphipod species, Aoroides longimerus (94 individuals) and A. semicurvatus (three individuals), were recorded for the first time in 2019 in the English Channel. Aoroides longimerus was found in four sites along the Normandy coast (Granville, Cherbourg, Saint-Vaast-La-Hougue, and Le Havre) while A. semicurvatus was found only in two sites (Granville and Saint-Vaast-La-Hougue). Because both species were recorded (2009-2014) from the French Atlantic coast, they have probably been introduced to the English Channel through the accumulated fouling of the hulls of ships used primarily for recreational purposes or by transfer of the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas between oyster farms along the French oyster production intertidal zones.

On 11 November 2017 one specimen of the Pacific amphipod Aoroides semicurvatus was collected in the southwestern delta area of the Netherlands. This is the first record from Europe outside France. Subsequently, on 18 and 23 November, tens of specimens were collected from about half a liter of red seaweeds from two locations in the Oosterschelde, near Goes and Colijnsplaat. On 9 December red seaweeds from Gorishoek yielded less than ten specimens. The Oosterschelde is an area with shellfish culture and recreational boating. Shellfish imports, or less likely transport with recreational vessels, may have been the introduction vector. Aoroides semicurvatus was mainly collected from the Pacific red seaweed Caulacanthus okamurae on Pacific oysters and boulders in the lower part of the intertidal zone. This microhabitat harbours few native amphipods in the Netherlands. Ecological effects of the introduction are not obvious. An effect that does become more and more obvious is the large and quickly growing proportion of exotic species in the delta area of the Netherlands.
... For instance, about 32 species belonging to Lembos Bate, 1857 have been transferred to other taxa. Identification is usually complicated, as many genera differ from each other in features such as the molar processes (Myers 1988), or the shape and length of the peduncle article 3 of the mandible (Ariyama 2004); these amphipods are usually quite fragile and during collection and sorting tend to lose the antennae and pereopods, making identification very difficult. ...

This paper reports the southernmost record of Camacho faroensis Myers, 1998 (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Aoridae) from samples collected at the continental slope (Ferrol Canyon) off the NW Iberian Peninsula during the DIVA-Artabria I expeditions. This species was initially described from the Faroe Islands but type specimens are incomplete and lack relevant features (e.g., antenna 1, pereopod 5). Therefore, a detailed redescription and drawings are provided based on examination of the type series and the new material collected. To date, the genus Camacho Stebbing, 1888 is composed of three species being C. faroensis as the only one reported so far from the Northern Hemisphere. This species is characterized by the following characters: absence of eyes, cephalic lobes reduced, presence of two ventral spines on peduncle article 1 distal margin of antenna 1, presence of spines (stout setae) on pereopods 5–7, reduced inner rami of uropod 3, and lacking distal setae. A key for all recognized species of the genus is also included. Keywords: Crustacea - Amphipoda - Camacho faroensis - NE Atlantic - Continental slope - Hard bottoms

The Mediterranean Sea is home to over 2/3 of the world's charter boat traffic and hosts an estimated 1.5 million recreational boats. Studies elsewhere have demonstrated marinas as important hubs for the stepping-stone transfer of non-indigenous species (NIS), but these unique anthropogenic, and typically artificial habitats have largely gone overlooked in the Mediterranean as sources of NIS hot-spots. From April 2015 to November 2016, 34 marinas were sampled across the following Mediterranean countries: Spain, France, Italy, Malta, Greece, Turkey and Cyprus to investigate the NIS presence and richness in the specialized hard substrate material of these marina habitats. All macroinvertebrate taxa were collected and identified. Additionally, fouling samples were collected from approximately 600 boat-hulls from 25 of these marinas to determine if boats host diverse NIS not present in the marina. Here, we present data revealing that Mediterranean marinas indeed act as major hubs for the transfer of marine NIS, and we also provide evidence that recreational boats act as effective vectors of spread. From this wide-ranging geographical study, we report here numerous new NIS records at the basin, subregional, country and locality level. At the basin level, we report three NIS new to the Mediterranean Sea (Achelia sawayai sensu lato, Aorides longimerus, Cymodoce aff. fuscina), and the reappearance of two NIS previously known but currently considered extinct in the Mediterranean (Bemlos leptocheirus, Saccostrea glomerata). We also compellingly update the distributions of many NIS in the Mediterranean Sea showing some recent spreading; we provide details for 11 new subregional records for NIS (Watersipora arcuata, Hydroides brachyacantha sensu How to cite this article Ulman et al. (2017), A massive update of non-indigenous species records in Mediterranean marinas. PeerJ 5: e3954; lato and Saccostrea glomerata now present in the Western Mediterranean; Symplegma brakenhielmi, Stenothoe georgiana, Spirobranchus tertaceros sensu lato, Dendostrea folium sensu lato and Parasmittina egyptiaca now present in the Central Mediterranean, and W. arcuata, Bemlos leptocheirus and Dyspanopeus sayi in the Eastern Mediterranean). We also report 51 new NIS country records from recreational marinas: 12 for Malta, 10 for Cyprus, nine for Greece, six for Spain and France, five for Turkey and three for Italy, representing 32 species. Finally, we report 20 new NIS records (representing 17 species) found on recreational boat-hulls (mobile habitats), not yet found in the same marina, or in most cases, even the country. For each new NIS record, their native origin and global and Mediterranean distributions are provided, along with details of the new record. Additionally, taxonomic characters used for identification and photos of the specimens are also provided. These new NIS records should now be added to the relevant NIS databases compiled by several entities. Records of uncertain identity are also discussed, to assess the probability of valid non-indigenous status.

The relationship between amphipod community and environmental factors was studied on a spatial scale along the Persian Gulf. Seven stations and four environmental factors were considered (seawater temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH). Ten amphipod species were recorded during this study. Based on the quantitative results Melita persia Momtazi, Sari et Maghsoudlou, 2014 and Parhyale darvishi Momtazi et Maghsoudlou., 2016 were the most abundant species in the studied area and the highest diversity was seen in the northwestern part of Qeshm island. Results of Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) showed that salinity is an effective factor among the amphipod assemblages in the Persian Gulf.

Gammaridea (Amphipoda) comprises approximately 7900 species. To date, 37 freshwater species from 8 families and 21 terrestrial species from 1 family have been recorded in Japan. The Japanese freshwater amphipod fauna is characterized by high endemism at the species level. Among the 36 native species, 32 (~89 %) are endemic. However, at the family level, endemism is quite low, and commonality with China, Russia, and North America is high. It is generally accepted that freshwater amphipods evolved from marine ancestors. As inferred from molecular data, amphipods have repeatedly switched between marine and freshwater habitats during their evolutionary history. Similarly, invasions of groundwater habitats have occurred independently in different lineages. In general, troglobitic amphipods are characterized by either the loss or rudimentation of eyes and pigment, attenuation of the body or appendages, and development of surface setae. These morphological features are probably an adaptation to life in subterranean environments. Talitridae is the only amphipod group that invades terrestrial environments. The following six types of distribution are recognized: (1) widely distributed from Hokkaido to Okinawa across the Tsugaru and Tokara Straits; (2) distributed south of the Tsugaru Strait (across the Tokara Strait); (3) distributed between south of the Tsugaru Strait and north of the Tokara Strait; (4) distributed north of the Tokara Strait (across the Tsugaru Strait); (5) distributed north of the Tsugaru Strait; and (6) species in restricted distributional ranges.

Two aorid amphipods, Aoroides ellipticus Ariyama, 2004 and A. semicurvatus Ariyama, 2004 from shallow waters of South Korea are reported here. Aoroides ellipticus has the characteristic setation of gnathopod 1 and the elliptical shape of basis on pereopod 7, while A. semicurvatus can be easily distinguished from congeners by combined characters of the curved propodus on gnathopod 2 and the absence of marginal spines on outer ramus of uropod 3 in mature males. This paper redescribed these two aorids and provided a key to Korean Aoroides species.
