Coastal elasmobranchs are vulnerable to chemicals mostly due to their k-strategic life history characteristics and high trophic positions. Embryos might be particularly exposed through the maternal offloading of contaminants, possibly leading to disruptions during critical developmental phases. Yet, knowledge on biochemical outcomes of prenatal exposure in elasmobranchs is notably limited. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effects of prenatal exposure to contaminants in embryos of the critically endangered Brazilian guitarfish, Pseudobatos horkelii. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pharmaceuticals and personal care products, and metals were determined in embryos. Additionally, glutathione S-transferase activity (GST), glutathione (GSH), and metallothionein levels (MT) were analyzed. Finally, lipid peroxidation levels (LPO) and protein carbonyl groups (PCO) were assessed. Embryonic exposure depended on yolk consumption, which was conspicuous in earlier development. We observed a dilution effect of contaminants levels, potentially related to biotransformation of these compounds throughout the embryonic development. Nevertheless, GST was not correlated to contaminant concentrations. The multivariate relationship between antioxidant components (GSH and GST) and LPO and PCO was negative, suggesting the lack of efficient defense of these biomarkers in early development, leading to oxidative damage. In this context, our results indicate that prenatal exposure to contaminants might impact the redox status in embryos of P. horkelii, leading to oxidative damage. Furthermore, metal concentrations influenced MT levels, suggesting this as a potential detoxification pathway in this species.

This study aimed to assess the maternal offloading of metals in the Brazilian guitarfishPseudobatos horkelii through determining essential (Cr, Cu, Fe) and non-essential (Cd, Hg, Pb) metal concentrations along two generations of this species: pregnant females and offspring. The maximum transfer capacity (ECER) and offspring/mother ratio were calculated to estimate the extent of offloading, as well as the proportion of contaminants presented in offspring related to the maternal concentrations. Transfer efficiency was element-dependent. Chromium had the highest ECER (99.7%), followed by Hg (67.7%). Other essential metals were less transferred (9.6–35.6%) and Cd and Pb were not detected in uterine content samples. The relationships between maternal length and concentration, as well as transfer capacity were not significant, indicating that females might be continuously exposed, and that offloading might not excrete metals efficiently. On the other hand, embryos are exposed to these elements which could impair embryonic development.

The present study examined the heavy metal contaminants in the muscle tissues of various species of fish including Sarda sarda, Trachurus trachurus, Merlangius merlangus, Mullus barbatus, Sardina pilchardis, Thunus thynnus Belone belone, Engraulis encrasicolus, Scomber scomber purchased from fish markets across Turkey’s Eastern Black Sea region. The contaminants thus found included cobalt (Co): 0.01-0.16, manganese (Mn) 0.11-4.41, chromium (Cr): 0.51-2.30, cadmium (Cd): 0.08-0.10, copper (Cu): 0.26-1.18, lead (Pb): 0.10-0.57, nickel (Ni): 1.07-24.0, and zinc (Zn): 5.46-16.9 ppm. These toxin levels were compared with daily and weekly intake guidelines deemed safe for human consumption, and what was found was that these values were all below outlined levels with the exception of nickel. What can be concluded this that there currently is no hazard to human health with the exception of above normal nickel levels, as found in one species from one station.

In the present study, the heavy metal concentrations in different organs (skin and muscle tissue) were studied in Lessepsian suez puffer (Lagocephalus suezensis Clark and Gohar, 1953) collected from Iskenderun Bay, North-eastern Mediterranean. Heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, Co, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni & Zn) were analyzed in different organs for the above mentioned species. The maximum heavy metals concentrations in muscle tissues of the species were Cu 1.750 mg/kg, Fe 18.096 mg/kg, Mn 0.606 mg/kg, Zn 228.571 mg/kg, Cd 2.00 mg/kg, Co 3.571 mg/kg, Cr 0.952 mg/kg, Ni 1.500 mg/kg and Pb 18.095 mg/kg. Zn was detected higher in all the samples followed by Fe, Pb, Co, Cd, Cu, Ni, Cr and Mn. In the present study, heavy metal concentrations were found high in muscle tissues when compared to skin. The Pb, Cd and Zn concentration over the recommended limits was found in Lagocephalus suezensis. Further, this is the first report on distribution of heavy metals and proximate compositions of commercialized important edible pufferfishes from Iskenderun Bay, Turkey.

In the present study, the heavy metal concentration (Cd, Cu, Pb, Ag, Co, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni & Zn) in skin and muscle were studied in silver-cheeked toadfish Lagocephalus sceleratus collected from Antalya Bay. The heavy metals concentration ranges in muscle tissue were Cu (0.276-0.518 μg/g); Fe (5.996-21.367 μg/g); Mn (0.601-2.633 μg/g); Zn (51.472-86.635 μg/g); Cd (0.045-0.139 μg/g); Co (0.541-0.833 μg/g); Cr (0.205-0.361 μg/g); Ni (0.108-0.765 μg/g) and Pb (1.464-2.560 μg/g). The heavy metal concentration ranges in skin were Cu (0.168-0.209 μg/g); Fe (1.738-4.467 μg/g); Mn (0.012-0.414 μg/g); Zn (3.337-6.451 μg/g); Cd (0.113-0.217 μg/g); Co (0.432-0.739 μg/g); Cr (0.101-0.148 μg/g); Ni (0.038-0.217 μg/g) and Pb (0.342-0.584 μg/g). The concentrations of Zn and Pb in the muscle tissues exceeded the acceptable levels for a food source and are not safe for human consumption. Further, this is the first report on distribution of heavy metals of Lagocephalus sceleratus from Antalya Bay, northern Levantine Sea, in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea south of Antalya Province, Turkey.

This study aimed to investigate the metal concentrations in muscles and livers of commercially important ten fish species from the coastal waters of Southeastern Black Sea. Metal levels in livers of species were greater than those in muscles. This study provides valuable information about metal contents in muscles and livers of the examined fish species and indirectly indicates the environmental contamination of the coast. According to the obtained results, it may be said that consumption of the edible muscle tissues of fish from this region by humans is not a risk.

Present study assessed the heavy metal accumulation in muscle and gill tissues of some fish species from Batlama stream in Giresun Coast. Heavy metal levels in analyzed fish were found as Co: 1.47-1.64 Cr: 0.09-0.36, Cu: 0.92-11.0, Fe: 8.01-17.6, Mn: 1.46-2.20, Ni: 2.69-3.55, Pb: 1.83-2.63, Zn: 9.80-17.0 in ppm for muscles; Co: 2.14-3.99, Cr: 0.20-0.58, Cu: 1.32-22.6, Fe: 52.2-140, Mn: 13.1-20.3, Ni: 7.85-13.6, Pb: 2.75-6.28, Zn: 37.5-80.8 in ppm for gills. Additionally, daily and weekly intakes were estimated for muscle tissue. Because these values were markedly below the limits recommended by different international authorities, it may be said that consumption of these species from the Batlama stream in Giresun Coast is not a problem on human.

The aim of this study was to investigate the metal concentrations in muscle and liver of ten economically important fish species from Antalya Bay. This study provides valuable preliminary information about metal contents in different tissues of the examined fish species from the bay and indirectly indicates the environmental contamination of the Antalya Bay. These results should be confirmed occasionally by conducting more detailed studies in the bay to update our knowledge of metal contaminants in economically important fish species.
