Visual analysis can help researchers to understand information and social relations encoded in images (Kress − Leuween 2006). This paper focuses on the different ways people “read” images in East and West as a result of their diverse cultural, social, gender and religious backgrounds. The main research question is if there is any visual analysis method which may be useful for any researcher regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender, time, and space. The paper presents a quick overview of an interdisciplinary research project: a visual analysis of Japanese and European paintings and woodblock prints between the 16th and 19th centuries, regarding the conceptions of childhood. The analysis method below is based on Panofsky (1984), Bouteaud (1989), and Collier (2010).
