3.: An illustration of the values of the pseudo-rapidity η according to different directions from the coordinate system's origin (lower left corner). The polar angle ϑ would be measured from the horizontal axis, positive upwards. The dark and light blue boxes are the muon spectrometer's barrel and end-cap modules, respectively (see section 3.2.4 for the muon spectrometer). Picture from [24]

Of all detectable Standard Model particles produced through proton-proton collisions at the LHC, muons are the only ones reaching the outermost layers of the ATLAS detector. They are a potent and clean tool to examine known and unknown physics processes as well as to monitor detector effects and performance. Measuring the efficiency of muon reconst...

Hadronization is a non-perturbative process, which theoretical description can not be deduced from first principles. Modeling hadron formation, requires several assumptions and various phenomenological approaches. Utilizing state-of-the-art Computer Vision and Deep Learning algorithms, it is eventually possible to train neural networks to learn non...

A review of the operation and of the performance of the LHCb experiment at the LHC collider is presented, together with highlights of recent physics results based on the data collected in the 2011 run, which correspond to an integrated luminosity of ∼1 fb−1∼1 fb−1. These measurements already have relevant implications on the contributions of New Ph...

The {\tt SANC} computer system is aimed at support of analytic and numeric calculations for experiments at colliders. The system is reviewed briefly. Recent results on high-precision description of the Drell-Yan processes at the LHC are presented. Special attention is paid to the evaluation of higher order final-state QED corrections to the single...

Many of the interesting physics processes to be measured at the LHC have a signature involving one or more isolated electrons. The electron reconstruction and identification efficiencies of the ATLAS detector at the LHC have been evaluated using proton–proton collision data collected in 2011 at s√=7 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity...

We study the top quark pair events production in $pp$ collisions in the $\ell$+jets channel at the LHC energy of $\sqrt{s} = 14$ TeV for Standard Model as well as new physics processes. We explore the usage of semi-boosted topologies where the top quark decays into a boosted hadronic $W$-jet and an isolated $b$-jet and study their performance in th...

One of the main tasks of the ATLAS detector at the LHC accelerator ring in the vicinity of Geneva is the search for the cause of the gauge symmetry breaking of the electroweak force. The minimal super symmetric extension of the standard model of particles (MSSM) explains this symmetry breaking by the existence of Higgs fields, which manifests itself among other by three electrically neutral Higgs bosons. The present thesis deals with the search for these particles in the dimuon channel. This channel has compared to the decay into b-quarks or Tau-leptons a very small branching ratio, but it leaves a very clear signal in the detector and allows therefore, if the searched Higgs bosons exist, a precise measurement of their properties. The aim of this thesis is to optimize the cut selection by which the signal should be separated from the background. Therefore, the predictions of three Monte Carlo generators are compared with the ATLAS data for agreement. Based on the best available simulation of the background, the cut selection is optimized with regard to the determination of limits on the Higgs bosons cross section.
