Military vehicles are exposed to harsh environments such that improved reliability of critical components is necessary to achieve lower fleet costs and satisfy mission objectives. This study investigates the reliability of critical components in a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), which is a widely used tactical vehicle. After a c...

Presented research that examines the impact of operational deployment on military family functioning. The research utilised a cross sectional design looking at group differences between stages of the deployment cycle as well as comparing these findings to a non-military population. Uniquely this research collected data from the mother and children...

... A vehicle alternator's overall function is to charge the vehicle battery as well as power the electrical auxiliaries; an alternator that is degraded or failed will ultimately result in the inability to use these additional auxiliaries and an increased potential for a dead battery and stalled car. Considering the importance of the alternator in the overall functioning of the vehicle and perhaps in particular for military vehicles for which mission success is dependent on the use of surveillance equipment or other features that require a properly functioning vehicle electrical system; knowledge of the health status of the alternator is useful information that can support logistical, tactical and maintenance planning efforts [187]. The vehicle alternator is essentially a rotating machine that generates a 3-phase alternating current that is rectified by a set of diodes in order to produce a DC current with low ripple content; the vehicle alternator shares many similarities with a generator, and to some degree electrical motors, and in turn some of the common health monitoring and prognostic techniques, as well as common failure modes, for motors and generators are applicable. ...

Military troops rely on maintenance management projects and operations to preserve the materials’ ordinary conditions or restore them to combat or military training. Maintenance management in the defense domain has its particularities, such as those related to the type of equipment operated, the environment and operating conditions, the need to maintain equipment readiness in cases of external aggression, and the security of the information. This study aims to understand the challenges, principles, scenarios, techniques, and open questions of predictive maintenance (PdM) in the military domain. We conducted a systematic literature review that resulted in the discussion of 43 articles, leading to the identification of 23 challenges and principles, 4 scenarios where predictive maintenance is crucial, besides discussing techniques used for PdM in the military domain. Our results contribute to understanding the perspective of PdM in the defense context.
