The present study is concerned with social inclusion, seen here as the process by which societies combat poverty and social exclusion. In order for policies for social inclusion to be developed and implemented, the factors working against social inclusion, namely, poverty and social exclusion, have to be understood. The aim of this study is to demo...

The paper is focused on the analysis of the correlation between economic development and poverty across the EU. The “surprise” is that many Member States face to high poverty and social exclusion rates in 2017 and the forecast are not too optimistic. The analysis in the paper follows more steps: a comparative analysis focused on child poverty rate,...

... The quantification and analysis of well-being and poverty have long challenged scholars, policymakers, and social planners, with no consensus on a definitive measurement approach [1]. Contemporary perspectives on poverty have evolved and are now broadly defined by many experts, including sociologists, psychologists, economists, and politicians, as social exclusion, a concept that extends beyond mere income or wealth considerations [2][3][4][5]. This modern interpretation recognizes poverty as a complex phenomenon, leading to an increasing focus in the academic literature on multidimensional measurement approaches. ...
... This modern interpretation recognizes poverty as a complex phenomenon, leading to an increasing focus in the academic literature on multidimensional measurement approaches. Researchers have criticized traditional methods for their disconnect from the real-life experiences of households, as these methods primarily view poverty as a lack of sufficient economic resources or income to meet basic living needs [5,6]. These conventional approaches, emphasizing monetary values and consumption or income data, have guided poverty alleviation efforts towards providing necessary resources [7,8]. ...

Poverty, particularly in developing regions, is a complex, multifaceted issue deeply embedded in various interrelated factors. It extends beyond mere financial insufficiency, encompassing limited access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and overall living standards. This study examines both the unidimensional and multidimensional aspects of rural poverty in Suri Sa-dar SubDivision , located in Eastern India. For the unidimensional aspect, this study employs the poverty headcount ratio and the Poverty Gap Index to gauge the incidence and intensity of poverty. In contrast, the multidimensional approach utilized three dimensions and 12 indicators to assess the incidence, severity, and multidimensional poverty index utilizing the Alkire-Foster (AF) methodology. The unidimensional analysis, focusing on income and consumption, highlights significant economic disparities, particularly in the western Community Development Blocks, namely, Khoy-rasole, Md. Bazar, and Rajnagar. The highest levels of multidimensional poverty are generally consistent with the unidimensional findings, particularly in the western blocks. These results underscore the need for comprehensive poverty reduction strategies that address both economic and broader aspects of poverty. In areas like the western blocks, where both income-based and multidi-mensional poverty rates are high, strategies should integrate economic development, improved healthcare access, enhanced educational quality, and living standards improvement. Therefore, this study serves not only as an academic endeavor but also as a vital tool for informed policymaking in poverty alleviation, providing planners, administrative officials, and researchers with essential insights to develop effective, localized, and sustainable poverty reduction strategies.

Inclusion promotes equal opportunities, and aims to eliminate discrimination, by ensuring full access, participation, and representation for all individuals in society, with music playing a crucial role in addressing this global challenge, and fostering positive and inclusive change. The aim of this study is to identify perceptions of inclusive culture, policies, values, and practices in one specific inclusive choir in Spain. The sample consisted of 135 members, ranging from 18 to 79 years of age, of which 22.2% have recognised disabilities. All of them filled in the adapted Scale for the Assessment of Inclusion (SAI) form. The results show that, regardless of gender, age, and length of participation in the choir, their members share positive perceptions of the inclusiveness of its values, policies, practices, and culture. However, perceptions vary across the groups surveyed, and are generally more favourable among participants with a disability, those without a university education, or those aged 26 or over. It is found that people who participate in an inclusive choir, in which music is the mediating resource, perceive a high level of inclusion that allows them to feel they belong to a group where diversity, equality, and the promotion of people are respected. The findings are analysed, considering the importance of conducting multidimensional evaluations that include all members of an organisation.
... Firstly, preventing social exclusion is essential to ageing in place and a healthy ageing process (Dahlberg, 2020). Secondly, this agenda is prioritised globally, including World Health Organization and United Nations (Atkinson & Marlier, 2010;Popay et al., 2008). Similarly, it is of particular concern to social researchers and policymakers aiming to promote socially sustainable and age-sensitive communities (Clarke & Mary, 1999;Grazuleviciute-Vileniske et al., 2020). ...

Beyond the concerns associated with marginalised groups’ underrepresentation, we posited that socio-demographic aspects and associated stigma provoke gendered social exclusion among older adults. Although these linkages have been frequently acknowledged, concrete evidence remains complicated. In a sample of 384 older adults from various administrative zones of the Lahore metropolitan, we examined that gendered social exclusion is typically connected with socio-demographic stereotypes. Statistics revealed that 72.3% of older adults reported social exclusion. Homemakers and non-workers were more prone to experience social exclusion than employed respondents. Findings further discovered that the social exclusion rates were more significant among older women (93.1%) than older men (47.5%). Among older women, those involved in some employment, having a personal income, living in higher-income households and joint families with their children or peers, and having access to a private car were less possibly socially excluded. The substantial gender aspect of social exclusion appears to be provoked by a gender-based socio-cultural context, limiting older women’s participation in daily socio-economic pursuits. Finally, possible consequences of increased social exclusion among older women and strategies to cater to this emerging issue are discussed.

... Elsewhere, considerable scholarship (Cobigo et al., 2012;Simplican et al., 2015), activism (Wolfensberger, 1983), and policy-making efforts (Atkinson & Marlier, 2010;United Nations, 2006) have been devoted to social inclusion concerns. Despite these efforts (within the IS discipline and beyond), moving toward greater social inclusion of marginalized groups remains a challenge (Pethig & Kroenung, 2019;Serenko & Turel, 2021). ...

We develop principles that facilitate socially inclusive design-oriented research with marginalized groups. Building on the recognition that the research process must be informed by theoretical perspectives about social inclusion, our effort begins with an empirical investigation of a multiyear research project that designed several IT-based solutions for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We treat the efforts to design each solution as a “case,” capture primary data from multiple sources, and analyze it in light of three facets of social inclusion drawn from prior work: self-determination, belongingness, and social capital. The findings are interpreted to derive five principles for a socially inclusive design-oriented research process: (1) respecting multiperspective problem ownership and integrated solution design, (2) surfacing emic contributions to guide artifact design, (3) leveraging the support network to shape artifact design and refine research conduct, (4) customizing design-evaluate cycles with inclusive practices, and (5) pursuing authenticity in research collaborations. We elaborate each principle with connections to different facets of social inclusion, guidelines suggested by our empirical investigation, and a mapping against contemporary design-oriented research approaches. The five principles suggest key directions to facilitate a socially inclusive design-oriented research process when working with marginalized groups. The paper concludes with a discussion of implications for IS scholars, and pointers for using design-oriented approaches for greater social inclusion of marginalized populations.
... However, these arguments contradict involuntary exclusion. Political inclusion, serves as a means to eliminate the obstacles preventing marginalized groups from full participation in social and political institutions (Atkinson & Marlier, 2010). It creates diverse opportunities for engagement in multi-dimensional and cooperative processes, nurtures various capacities among marginalized groups, and fosters collective solidarity while adhering to established standards. ...

Political inclusion refers to political participation, representing voice and agency, and indicating whether a person's voice can be heard while trying to access services. It serves as a means of ensuring full political participation and representation for all based on equal rights. The objective of this study is to compare political inclusion in Nepal between the elections of 2017 and 2022. Secondary data has been analyzed using textual analysis, averages, percentages, and numbers. The Constitution of Nepal grants equal rights to all citizens and provides a special quota for women and other social groups to ensure equal participation. It is observed that these constitutional provisions have been fully implemented in practice when it comes to women. However, women have been allocated only the mandatory seats. Similarly, it is also noted that there is little difference in the political representation of various social groups between the two elections. In national and provincial assemblies, councils of ministries, and the central committees of national political parties, the Khash/Aarya community has a stronger presence compared to other communities, followed by women, then Janajati, and then Terai/Madhesi and Dalits. However, it should be noted that there is a majority of Terai/Madhesi representation in the central committees of the PSPN and JP, as well as in the council of ministries of Madhes Province.
