Landslide is one of the most severe natural disaster has caused huge socioeconomic losses. Statistics from the Centre for Research on Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED) estimates that 17% of fatalities caused from all natural disaster are due to landslides. This paper demonstrate a proposed monitoring and early warning system for landslide utilising Wireless Sensor Networks WSN and Internet of Things IoT technology. The system will include soil moisture sensor as it has been demonstrated by various researcher that rainfall is one of the leading cause of landslide. DHT22 sensor is used to record the air temperature and humidity of the soil surface. MPU6050 gyro-accelerometer which consisted of 3-axis gyroscope and 3-axis accelerometer will be utilized to detect soil movement and vibration with relatively high accuracy and resolution. Arduino Mega 2560 will record the temperature, humidity, vibration and moisture of the soil surface. These real-time data will be transmitted using via ZigBee to a receiver unit which is equipped with ESP8266 Wi-fi module so that the data can be uploaded to the cloud. The data and status of the terrain is assessable to other researchers and public via smart phone application developed using Blynk Internet of Things IoT platform. The landslide alert will be broadcast through smartphone application unlike other proposed system in the literature. Communities can receive the alert in real-time thereby potentially reduce the fatality risk.

There is growing pressure from regulators on operators to adhere to increasingly stricter regulations related to the environment and safety. Hence operators are required to predict and contain risks related to hydrocarbon production and their infrastructure in order to maintain their license to operate. A deeper understanding of production optimization and production-related risk requires strengthened knowledge of reservoir behavior and overburden dynamics. To accomplish this, sufficient temporal and spatial resolution is required as well as an integration of various sources of measurements. At the same time, tremendous developments are taking place in sensors, networks, and data analysis technologies. Sensors and accompanying channels are getting smaller and cheaper and yet they offer high fidelity. New ecosystems of ubiquitous wireless communications including Internet of Things (IoT) nowadays allow anyone to affordably connect to the Internet at any time and anywhere. Recent advances in cloud storage and computing combined with data analytics allow fast and efficient solutions to handle considerable amounts of data. This paper is an effort to pave the way for exploiting these three fundamental advances to create IoT-based wireless networks of seismic sensors.

The system that is proposed is an early warning system that can provide valuable minutes that would help in mitigation of disasters like landslide and flash floods. The system comprises of a wireless sensor network established on slopes of a mountainside which are prone to landslides and flash floods. The network established is based on a zig bee tree topology. For purpose of demonstration, a two node system has been proposed. The nodes will measure precipitation using a tipping rain gauge and landslides using buried microphones or peizo elements that measure pressure changes. These nodes would report to a base station which would have a zig bee coordinator as a receiver. This unit, called the base unit will communicate with a master unit using a long range RF transmitter. This unit will be suitably located at a location, say, for example at the district collector. When rain detected by the nodes is larger in a given time period, so as to produce a flash flood, this information is sent to the base unit which in turn sends it to the master unit. The master unit sounds an alarm and sends SMS to related officials via a GSM module interfaced with it. Keywords—GSM modem, flood alarm ,water level sensor, accelarometer.

Landslides or landslip occurs at the down slopes. Landslides are most common in the Asian countries. The movements of rock mass or soil under the gravity are causes due to both Natural and human activities. Increase in the hydrostatic pressure, by saturation of rain water, melting of snow, increase in groundwater level, increase of pore water pressure, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes are natural causes of the landslip. Human activities include the deforestation, cultivation, machinery vibrations, blasting mining etc. Decrease in the shear stress and increase in the shear strain borne by material cause the change in the stability of the slope. Landslide causes extensive loss to the human lives and properties this makes important to monitor and make early warning systems. An attempt is made to create low cost and effective warning system IOT based landslide detection system. Using Arduino, Wi-Fi module, Moisture Sensors and Vibration sensors. When data is collected it is uploaded by Arduino to the cloud ThingSpeak which help to monitor the real time data and send alert to the end user via SMS on the mobile phone about the Landslide when it happens.
