It has been reported that Sclerotium nivale Elenev causes winter damage (Sclerotium disease) to winter rye and turfgrass in the European part of Russia, Ukraine, and Estonia. This fungal name is invalid, and their biological characteristics are limited. Since all reports on this fungus and their disease are written in Russian and Estonian without our recent review (Tkachenko 2013), few phytopathologists outside the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics know about this fungus. We found symptoms of Sclerotium disease in Moscow, Russia, and we obtained asexual spore-forming ascomycetous (absent clamp connections) and basidiomycetous (had clamp connections) isolates from their white sclerotia. “S. nivale” was composed of several fungal species of ascomycetes and basidiomycetes. The ascomycetous isolate had the ability to grow under the snow cover, and phylogenic analysis suggested that the ascomycetous isolate had high homology (98–99%) with genera of Karstenula and Paraphaeosphaeria. We previously reported sclerotia of Typhula sp. were formed ca. 2 weeks to 1 month after the snow melt, remained immature as mycelial aggregations after snow melt, and matured without snow. In addition, Paraphaeosphaeria included sclerotium parasites such as P. minitans. Several cold-adapted fungi infected basidiomycetous sclerotia of Typhula spp. and others. These findings suggested that ascomycetous S. nivale was the possibility of the mycoparasite under the snow.

A mycological survey from Monti della Tolfa, a volcanic region of central Italy that originated during the Early Pleistocene and remained isolated from the mainland for at least one million years, shows that a thermophilous shrubland dominated by Arbutus unedo preserves fungal species typically associated with conifers. Pinaceae are currently absent from the study area. Palynological data from the same region show a decline of Abies and Picea around 70 ka BP and their complete disappearance during the Holocene. Pinus disappeared during the postglacial. This may have determined first the isolation of the fungal populations in relict conifer woodlands in Monti della Tolfa, and then their adaptation to the current habitat, which was favored by the presence of Arbutus unedo, a broadly receptive species towards fungal associates. Genetic sequences of an isolate of Amanita muscaria (fly agaric) from Monti della Tolfa indicate that our individual is more closely related to North American than to Eurasian populations and add new insights into the phylogeographic processes of this globally distributed species.

The present paper summarizes our knowledge on the distribution of species of the genus Clavulina in Russia. The taxonomic history of the genus is considered and its morphological characteristic is given. The taxonomic position of the genus is accepted in the Hydnaceae family of the order Cantharellales. In total, 7 species of the genus are currently known for Russia. The identification key for species is presented, and original morphological descriptions of species as well as annotated list containing data on substrates, habitat conditions and distribution throughout Russia are given. Annotated list is compiled taking into account the authors’ data, herbarium materials and bibliographic sources.

Ramaria rufescens is a mycorrhizal species associated with Picea abies and (more rarely) Pinus sylvestris, in calcareous, mossy spruce or pine forests of N and C Europe, also found in several regions in Russia (including Asian part). These forest types often occupy small and fragmented areas, and are declining both in N and C Europe, due to area loss and reduced ecological conditions.

A total of 62 species of fungi have been recorded for the first time from 15 administrative regions of Russia: Altai Krai, Altai Republic, Arkhangelsk Oblast, Chelyabinsk Oblast, Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Kirov Oblast, Leningrad Oblast, Magadan Oblast, Novgorod Oblast, Novosibirsk Oblast, Omsk Oblast, Republic of Bashkortostan, Sverdlovsk Oblast, Volgograd Oblast, Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. An annotated species list containing the data on location, substrate, habitat type and voucher numbers is provided. The results of a study of the more than century-long history of taxonomic and ecological structures of basidial macromycete biota in polar deserts of the Northern Hemisphere are discussed. Nowadays, 77 species of macromycetes are known from this region, 40 species of which are agaricoid fungi, 30 are aphyllophoroid, and 7 are gasteromycetes. The highest number of species is known for the Franz Josef Land archipelago and Severanya Zemlya. All the identified species of agaricoid and 86% of gasteroid fungi are native representatives from extremely high latitudes collected under natural conditions, whereas 80% of the aphyllophoroid fungi are alien elements. All alien species are able to exist in the region exclusively in human-modified habitats, colonizing anthropogenic woody and grass substrates, and they disappear with the depletion of these resources. Despite the existence of mycobiota at the limit of the global thermal gradient, a specific species complex of macromycetes that does not occur anywhere in the world is formed here. Symbiotrophic species (basidial lichens and mycorrhiza-formers) are the most adaptable to such extreme conditions. General features of the organization with Antarctic mycobiota are established. The possibility that new species will appear in the region is discussed in connection with the intensification of human economic activity and global climate change.

The results of a 20-year study of the spatial distribution of clavarioid mycobiota in the West Siberian Plain (WSP) are discussed. The species structure has been studied on two scales: regional (an area of 100000 km²) and local (100 km²). In the studied area, 121 species of clavarioid fungi are found. The patterns of spatial variability of species diversity on the plain are revealed. On the regional scale, the maximum species richness of fungi is observed in hemiboreal forests (104 species); on the local scale it ranges from the middle boreal to hemiboreal (54.3–54.5 species). With the increasing pessimality of the hydrothermal regime, the number of species decreases sharply on both scales in the direction of the tundra and steppes. The study of the distribution of diversity among the localities reveals changes not only along the latitudinal gradient, but also in the longitude sectors: in the forest zone, the richest localities are located on the western and eastern edges of the plain, while in the extensive marshy areas in the center the number of species is lower (p < 0.05). A map of the spatial distribution of species diversity for the local scale is constructed. The correspondence of the spatial distribution of the studied fungi group to a global latitudinal gradient is discussed. The main abiotic factors forming a variety of the studied group of fungi in the region are revealed.

In April 2017, the steppes mycobiota of the "Rostov" strict nature reserve and its environs were studied. There are 75 species have been identified, of which 85 % belong to class Basidiomycota, and 15 % to Ascomycota. One species (Cheilymenia dennisii) firstly mentioned for Russia, eight species are first indicated for Rostov province, and 20 are new for the nature reserve. Among Basidiomycota, the largest groups are "aphyllophoroid" (29 species), "agaricoid" (17) and "gasteroid" (14). A number of species have been identified (Polyporus rhizophilus, Gastrosporium simplex, Geastrum campestre, etc.) included in several Red Data Books of the steppe regions of Russia. A large number of rare and indicative species of fungi found in the "Rostov" state nature reserve characterizes this territory as an important site for the conservation of the steppe mycobiota of Eurasia.

The clavarioid fungi are characterized by the basidiome morphology that emulates coral reef, ranging from to the simplest form until the profusely branched. For Tabasco State eight species are known, therefore this study is performed in order to describe the diversity of macro fungi with clavarioid morphology. Twenty visits were done to The Agua Blanca State Park from July 2011 to January 2012. From the analysis of sixty-two specimens, twenty-four morpho species taxa were recognized, corresponding to 7 families, 11 genera and only 11 determined species. The best represented families were Clavariaceae (four genera, nine species), Pterulaceae (two genera, five species), Lentariaceae (one genus, four species) and Gomphaceae (one genus, three species) that represent 88% of all specimens analyzed. The determined taxa are new records for the state of Tabasco, with the exception of Clavulinopsis corniculata previously recorded and 19 taxa are new records for the area.

This paper attempts to compile available data on Estonian clavarioid fungi (Basidiomycota) published between 1856 and 2006 (78 publications) and 986 herbarium specimens studied and observations. 103 species have been reported including 46 species new for Estonia. The most frequent species is Typhula erythropus, followed by Macrotyphula juncea, Typhula setipes, Clavulina cinerea, Clavariadelphus ligula, Ramaria gracilis and Typhula phacorrhiza. These constitute around 28% of all observations, but only 6.8% of all species. Twenty one species (20.6%) were collected only once, fifteen species (14.7%) twice and ten species three times (9.8%). Some species rare for whole Europe, but also for its hemiboreal zone, are also infrequently collected, like Clavaria zollingeri, Clavulina amethystina, Lentaria subcaulescens, Multiclavula mucida, Ramaria botrytis, Ramariopsis crocea, Ramariopsis pulchella and Sparassis crispa. Rare and threatened are the old-growth habitats species like, e.g., Clavaria amoenoides, Clavaria rosea, Clavulinopsis rufipes, Clavulinopsis umbrinella, Multiclavula corynoides, Ramaria broomei and Typhula sphaeroidea.
