The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Al-Khwarizmi College of Engineering at Baghdad University has lately renovated its own research laboratories to comply with international safety measures and conduct undergraduate and postgraduate research. In this regard, the department has harnessed some amenities within the college to establish these laboratories taking into accounts creating a convenient, safe, and developed working environment for both researchers and students. A precise procedure was followed to establish this laboratory which includes providing new bench tops which offer spacious working places for workers. These benches were supplied with power points, gas, water, and compressed air outlets. In addition, the laboratories were provided with fume hoods, fire extinguishers, and other auxiliary safety tools. For all that, an inspection conducted by experts to these laboratories showed some major and minor faults which need to be taken into considerations to ensure safety for all workers within these amenities.

Al-Mishraq sulfur mine (25 miles to the north of Qayyarah in Mosul province, Iraq) has been considered as the largest sulfur mine in the world. The site has caused two catastrophic events in 2003 and 2016 due to combustion of elemental. sulfur. The release of about 600 k tons of sulfur dioxide. (SO2) led to the formation. of the largest. non-volcanic. sulfur cloud ever measured by satellites. Gaseous. sulfur dioxide is. readily. soluble. in water, and reacts with water molecules in the. atmosphere. to produce. sulfuric acid rain which can cause serious damage to environment. We report here the adverse effects upon sulfur dioxide evolution as result of sulfur combustion as. well. as. acid rain. We also highlight some major health problems that people. have. suffered. so far from sulfur dioxide evolution.

... A recent study published in the Middle East region, Iraq at Al-Nahrain University shows that the laboratories never designed based on international standards; almost seven major safety defects emerged within two years post-establishment [7]. Other published studies at the same University, raised the significance of maintenance of the neglected fume cupboard, and the importance of preserving proper ventilation at the undergraduate chemistry laboratories to reduce the accidents [8,9]. ...

Background: Implementing safety procedures and precautions minimize the risk of exposure to toxic chemicals and costs of a consequence of a hazardous work environment. Therefore, the aim of this study is to measure the perception of safety standards implementation at different laboratories at the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional study use questionnaire consists of 25 questions. A total of 73 employees, researchers, and students participate in questionnaires distributed in Riyadh, Dammam and Abha cities on 2016, May 10th to June 5th. Results: The majority of participants is male, living in Riyadh, married and has an education higher than secondary school. The age of participants is 28 ± 5 years. Conclusion: The study shows variations in the implementation of security measures and standards at laboratories in three different cities in Saudi Arabia. The Large-scale longitudinal study is recommended for next research.
... As a general rule, every chemical used in the laboratory must be considered as a hazardous material and safety precautions must be taken into accounts. Additionally, sufficient information must be obtained about all chemicals in the inventory of all laboratories [4][5][6][7][8][9]. However, the story was different in one of our laboratories as there was an accident took place as a result of unknown chemicals were put in a furnace and heated to 400°C upon request from a postgraduate student. ...

There is no doubt that laboratories are extremely dangerous places as many hazardous materials are dealt with. It is mandatory to take safety precautions in laboratories at all times with no excuses. Herein, we report an incident took place in a research laboratory at Department of Chemistry Al-Nahrain University as a result of dealing with some chemicals without knowing their risks in advance. We emphasize the importance of having all necessary information of the chemical that we wish to deal with, including the safety data sheet (SDS) and based on that we can make the risk assessment form. Also, we would like to recommend adding good and functional smoke detectors as well as some oxygen sensors to ensure safe working area.

Teaching and research laboratory staff members are continuously and hardly working to report any incident took place in their facilities. Furthermore, these incidents have been extensively investigated in depth with explicit report of the potential reasons for these incidents as well as suggesting feasible precautions to avoid them in the future. However, it has been realised that raising students as well as personnel in laboratories is important to hider any possibility for having any accident. The objective evaluation of the infrastructure which is necessary for conducting experiments as well as maintaining safety measures at all times and this job can be run by the chemistry safety standards committee (CSSC) within chemistry departments. Herein, we report for the first time a comprehensive evaluation for chemistry laboratories in terms of the infrastructure, incidents, and the renovations occurred at these amenities. Additionally, there is a detailed description for all laboratory staff or students misconducts with a roadmap to offer a better research or teaching laboratory that complies with international safety standards.
