A case of periapical abscess surrounding the roots of the left maxillary medial and lateral incisors with focal bony destruction involving the left incisive bone (premaxilla) as well as the palatine process of the left maxilla resulting in oro-nasal fistula. The incisive canal is still intact. (A) Digital Panorama X-ray view: the lesion is hardly noted as faint lucency surrounding the diseased roots (arrow). (B and C) Axial and reconstructed coronal oblique MDCT images in bone windows. (D–J) The abscess and fistula are demonstrated in 3-D VR images using different angles and software. (I and J) Views from the nasal side of the fistula.

Aim The aim of this study was to assess the role of MDCT and the dedicated dental software in assessment of the periapical abscesses of the maxillary teeth and in detection of abnormal fistula as well as post intervention complications. Materials and methods This study was conducted on 20 patients with periapical abscess of the maxillary teeth. MD...

Aim: This report aims to present the application of partial pulpotomy procedures in fractured maxillary central incisors with immature roots. The application of this treatment approach in fractured immature permanent teeth is advantageous but a number of challenges exist particularly when the affected teeth are severed with complicated fractures Me...

Dental diseases in dogs and cats are of increasing importance in veterinary practice. If not diagnosed and treated on time, they can significantly affect the quality of life and pet health as well. Roentgenography of orofacial system, as a part of veterinary dentistry, is an important diagnostic tool that provides insight into diseases and irregularities of the teeth, shows macrostructure of bone parts, and also may indicate the etiology and genesis of various pathological conditions of the teeth. The objective of this paper is to point out to most common pathologies which small animal veterinary dentistry daily meets, as well as to foster the systematic development in this area in order to find more quality to both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
... In a periodontal abscess, the infection originates from the periodontal tissues or the gingiva. 1 The ED sometimes serves as the primary care setting for the workup of simple DA, instead of outpatient dental clinics. This trend has resulted in an increase in the dental related ED visits, as a percentage of all ED visits. 1 Published literature has advocated the use of the simple, cheap, and familiar technique of panoramic radiographs as the standard radiological technique in evaluating simple DA. 2 However, in most ED settings, facial computed tomography (CT) has superseded the use of panoramic radiographs, because of its availability, easy access, and potential to offer greater anatomic detail. There are, however, issues associated with the routine use of CT in terms of increased turnaround time (TAT), radiation exposure, and technical/professional fees associated with routinely utilizing facial CT in the workup of DA. ...

Facial Computed Tomography (CT) is often performed in the emergency department as a part of the diagnostic workup for patient's presenting with the signs and symptoms of dentoalveolar abscess (DA). This investigation evaluates the diagnostic yield of the facial CT and its effects on management change in patients suspected of DA. Furthermore, we assess secondary consequences of routine facial CT use in this population by using turnaround time (TAT), cost and radiation exposure as the key parameters. We retrospectively reviewed records of suspected DA patients over a five-year period, from June 2008 to June 2013. TAT for patients were calculated from the time the examination was ordered by ED physician, to the time that the report was finalized by the attending radiologist. Effective radiation dose for facial CT was calculated by multiplying DLP by the standard conversion coefficient (K) (k = 0.0021 mSv/mGy × cm). Cost CT was included for reference, but was not analyzed extensively due to the lack of standardization of costs across the various institutions. Our investigation consisted of 117 patients, 75 males of average age 41(±12), and 42 females with average age 44(±17). Out of the total 117 patients that underwent a CT for the suspicion of a simple DA, only a single individual (0.85%) underwent a management change. Mean TAT of facial CT was 110 (±63) minutes, and a median TAT was 87(±71) minutes. Average effective radiation dose for a facial CT was 2.4(±0.4) mSv. Approximate estimated cost of a contrast enhanced facial CT was $253 and non-contrast facial CT was $209. Our study shows that the routine use of Facial CT has a very limited diagnostic value in the workup of simple DA and rarely results in a management change. The overall impact on patient management is miniscule in the context of prolonged TAT, radiation exposure, and adding to the rising medical costs. © 2014 Marshfield Clinic.

Introduction: Intraoral abscesses are mainly odontogenic abscesses which need ambulatory treatment, which often involves the extraction of the causal tooth. This is a clinical analysis of occurrence and treatment of an odontogenic abscess in patients of The Department Oral Surgery at the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin treated between 2010-2016. Material/Methods: The estimate made was based on medical records between the years 2010-2016. Research applied to 327 patients, comprising 183 males and 144 females. The age of the patients ranged from 3 to 87. In the data analysis the patients’ demographic data, treatment, location and causes of abscess were taken into account. Results: The largest age group in which abscesses occurred was comprised of people between the ages of 21-30. Abscess occurrence was more common in males. The molar was the most common causal tooth in permanent as well as primary dentition. The most common abscess location was vestibule of the oral cavity. Conclusions: Due to hygiene negligence, a large amount of odontogenic tissue inflammation and intraoral abscesses have been found to require surgical intervention despite widespread access to dental care. The most important in abscess treatment is surgical incision; pharmacotherapy should be additional treatment. The most common antibiotic used for inflammation treatment was clindamycin.

Background: Dental abscess is frequently miscalculated in terms of its morbidity and mortality. The aim of the present study was to screen for the presence of Staphylococcus aureus in the periodontal abscess. Materials and Method:Twenty five patients participated in the study. The pus was aspirated from the periodontal abscess with 22 gauge sterile needle and transferred into sterile eppendorf tubes. Isolation and identification of S. aureus was performed as per standard protocol. Results: S. aureus was isolated from 11 (44%) of 25 patients. All patients showed symptoms of chronic periodontitis. Conclusion:Periodontal abscess with the presence ofS.aureusmay result in substantial burden on individuals and the health-care system; hence, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are extremely important.
