A: Schematic of the polarizer and analyzer filter exchanger. The arrows indicate the orientation of the polarizing filter. PH = Phase contrast; B: Series of images of same coccolith specimen, Gephyrocapsa oceanica , in five different positions of the crossed polarizing filter (each offset by 9°). — Note that the calcite bridge (distinguishing feature) crossing the central area is only visible in image 5.

Manual collection of a statistically significant quantity of unbiased and reproducible data on microfossil morphology is time consuming. Therefore, fully automated operating robots are needed that recognise and analyse microfossils. Here, a robot is described that autonomously measures the size and shape of randomly oriented planktic foraminifers u...

... order to identify calcareous nannofossils, transmitted light, phase contrast, and crossed polarized light (XPL, crossed nicols) in different orientations, is required. In crossed polarized light, it is desirable to rotate specimens with respect to the direction of the crossed nicols as distinct features, for example the bridge elements of the coccolith genus Gephyrocapsa, are only visible at certain orientations of the crossed nicols (see Figure 8 B). As a high precision rotating motorized stage was considered to be too difficult to build and too slow for collecting images automatically, our microscope was extended by two motorized polarizing filter exchangers, one above and one below the sample stage (see also Fueten (1997)). ...
