Coniferous stands perform environment-forming, protective, indicative, recreational and other functions. The islands in the northern part of the Sea of Japan (Primorsky Region, Russia) are inhabited by eight species of gymnosperms belonging to three families and five genera: Abies holophylla Maxim., Abies nephrolepsis (Trautv.ex Maxim.) Maxim., Picea ajanensis Fisch. ex Carrière, Pinus densiflora Siebold & Zucc., Pinus koraiensis Siebold & Zucc. Juniperus davurica Pall., Juniperus rigida Siebold & Zucc., Taxus cuspidata Siebold & Zucc. Populations of Taxus cuspidata survive under natural conditions on Naumov and Petrov islands; communities of Pinus densiflora – on Vkhodnye, Sibiryakov, and Antipenko islands; natural plantations of Abies holophylla – on Stenin and Sibiryakov islands; elfinwoods of Juniperus davurica – on Skaly Kreyser Islands. Under anthropogenic conditions, coniferous species are rare or sporadic. The islands of the Pacific region from the subtropics to the boreal zone are home to 35 species of conifers, 11 genera and 4 families. The most common coniferous species on the Pacific islands are Taxus cuspidata and Pinus pumila . Two groups of islands: one comprising Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands as well as other embracing islands of the Bering Sea and the northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk, are identified based on similarity in coniferous species composition. For conservation and restoration of communities with the participation of coniferous species, attention should be given to both large tracts of coniferous plantations and small populations.
... The triploid cytotype is completely sterile because flowers do not produce capsules 40 ; however, triploids have vigorous vegetative reproduction through bulbils, which are formed along the whole stem. Although the origin of the triploid cytotype of L. lancifolium has been a matter of debate during the past half century, most of the studies carried out during the last decade strongly support an autopolyploid origin, including classical and modern cytogenetic approaches [45][46][47] and genetic diversity studies 42,48 . The diploid cytotype, despite being locally common, has a very narrow distribution, occurring in western and southern coastal areas of the Korean Peninsula (including Jeju Island and surrounding smaller islands), and in the Japanese islands of Tsushima and Iki 41,43 , although it has also been once cited in Russia, near Vladivostok, in Primorsky Region 49 . ...

One of the topics currently under discussion in biological invasions is whether the species’ climatic niche has been conserved or, alternatively, has diverged during invasions. Here, we explore niche dynamic processes using the complex invasion history model of Lilium lancifolium, which is the first tested case of a native species (Korea) with two hypothesized spatial (regional and intercontinental) and temporal arrivals: (1) as an archaeophyte in East Asia (before AD 1500); and (2) as a neophyte in Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand (after AD 1500). Following a niche examination through both environmental and geographical spaces, the species in the archaeophyte range has apparently filled the ancestral native niche and, rather, would have increased it considerably. The species as a neophyte shows a closer climatic match with the archaeophyte range than with the native one. This pattern of niche similarity suggests that the neophyte range was probably colonized by a subset of archaeophyte propagules adapted to local climate that promoted the species’ establishment. Overall, niche conservatism is proposed at each colonization step, from native to archaeophyte, and from archaeophyte to neophyte ranges. We detected signals of an advanced invasion stage within the archaeophyte range and traces of an early introduction stage in neophyte ranges.

Rorippa indica L. Hiern is a local vegetable that is widely consumed by Dayak’s tribe in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. It is mostly traditionally cultivated without fertilizers, resulting in low productivity. The research aimed to investigate the effect of fertilizers and soil type on the growth characteristics and N uptake of R. indica. The experiment was arranged in a factorial completely randomized design consisting of two factors with four replications. The first factor was fertilizer application (control, 20 t ha-1 of chicken manure, and 600 kg ha-1 of NPK), and the second was soil type (peat and Ultisol). The results revealed that the interaction of fertilizers and soil type gave a non-significant effect on all variables observed, except N uptake. The application of NPK increased the plant height and number of leaves significantly. Compared to control, the increment was 112.50% and 130.32%, respectively, and chicken manure application increased the dry weight (327.87%), N total (310.16%), and N uptake of plants by 478% in peat soil and 228% in Ultisol. This finding concludes that 20 t ha-1 of chicken manure can be applied to increase the productivity of R. indica.

We investigated vascular plants of Bigeumdo and Dochodo Island in Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, Korea. By referring to 2 field surveys between June and September in 2021, a total of 490 taxa were identified and grouped into 113 families, 332 genera, 452 species, 6 subspecies, 27 varieties, and 3 forms. Among those observed, 232 taxa comprising 84 families, 189 genera, 220 species, 4 subspecies, 8 varieties, 4 forms were observed in Bigeumdo, 428 taxa comprising 107 families, 305 genera, 397 species, 5 subspecies, 23 varieties and 3 forms were observed in Dochodo. Among them, 7 taxa were Korean endemic plants. Protected species designated by the Ministry of Environment were 2 taxa of level II. In terms of threated plants according to the IUCN Red List Categoty, there were 5 taxa, consisting of 1 endangered species (EN), 3 vulnerable species (VU), 1 Near Threatened (NT). In total, there are 36 taxa of floristic regional indicator plants, including 1 level V taxa, 5 level IV taxa, 28 level III taxa. In Korea, 4 taxa were the northern distributional limit to Bigeumdo and Dochodo. Alien plants were 58 taxa.

Background: Since 2003, the H5 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) subtype has caused massive economic losses in the poultry industry in South Korea. The role of inland water bodies in avian influenza (AI) outbreaks has not been investigated. Identifying water bodies that facilitate risk pathways leading to the incursion of the HPAI virus (HPAIV) into poultry farms is essential for implementing specific precautionary measures to prevent viral transmission. Objectives: This matched case-control study (1:4) examined whether inland waters were associated with a higher risk of AI outbreaks in the neighboring poultry farms. Methods: Rivers, irrigation canals, lakes, and ponds were considered inland water bodies. The cases and controls were chosen based on the matching criteria. The nearest possible farms located within a radius of 3 km of the case farms were chosen as the control farms. The poultry farms were selected randomly, and two HPAI epidemics (H5N8 [2014-2016] and H5N6 [2016-2017]) were studied. Conditional logistic regression analysis was applied. Results: Statistical analysis revealed that inland waters near poultry farms were significant risk factors for AI outbreaks. The study speculated that freely wandering wild waterfowl and small animals contaminate areas surrounding poultry farms. Conclusions: Pet birds and animals raised alongside poultry birds on farm premises may wander easily to nearby waters, potentially increasing the risk of AI infection in poultry farms. Mechanical transmission of the AI virus occurs when poultry farm workers or visitors come into contact with infected water bodies or their surroundings. To prevent AI outbreaks in the future, poultry farms should adopt strict precautions to avoid contact with nearby water bodies and their surroundings.
