... It is the second largest genus in the family with currently 44 accepted species worldwide (http://www.indexfungorum.org/). The expected number of species in Circinaria is considerably higher, partly because some taxa, if examined with molecular tools, will likely still need to be transferred from Aspicilia (Nordin et al. 2010, Ren & Zhang 2018, Paukov et al. 2019) and based on preliminary reviews of morphological, anatomical, and molecular data new species remain to be discovered (Owe-Larsson et al. 2011, Ismayil et al. 2019, McCarthy & Elix 2020. ...

A crustose species Circinaria semicontorta is described here as new to science. It is characterized by a whitish areolate to subverrucose thallus with a thinning, cracked margin, not forming true lobes, areoles with raised whitish pseudocyphellae containing black ostioles of conidiomata, and long pycnoconidia, 12–25 μm. The phylogenetic analysis based on ITS sequences confirms placing the new species within Circinaria.
... The thallus diameter varies between specimens with lobe length whereas the presence of nearly identical ascospore size in all the specimens along with the other morpho-anatomical characters except the presence of norstictic acid in new collections were found consistent. On the basis of above analysis and previous literature regarding Lobothallia chemotype (Esnault 1985;Roux et al. 2017;Paukov et al. 2019), the authors declared these specimens as L. iqbalii chemotype (Fig. 4), as the above mentioned characters are not much informative to isolate these as a distinct species. ...

Lobothallia pulvinata is described and illustrated here from Pakistan. The species is characterized by a thin thallus, large lecanorine apothecial discs, (0.3–1.2 mm), smaller ascospores, (8–12 × 4–6 µm) and the presence of norstictic acid than the similar L. pakistanica. Both the morphological and molecular characters confirm the novelty of this taxon. The phylogenetic position within the relatively recent genus-level circumscription of the family Megasporaceae is confirmed based on nrITS and mtSSU sequence datasets. Description, phylogenetic analysis and a comparison table with other Lobothallia species are provided. A brief note on L. iqbalii, norstictic acid chemotype is also presented.

This work summarizes the results of the exploration of freshwater lichen biota on the island of Sardinia associated with the regional flagship species Lobothallia hydrocharis, a large-sized crustose lichen from the splash zone along mountain streams, so far known from Sardinia only. Molecular data were used to confirm its distinctiveness from other taxa and its systematic placement and to identify critical taxa among its associated lichen biota. We found 25 species of lichenized fungi, including three species new to science in the genera Verrucaria, Placopyrenium, and Circinaria, and seven species new to Sardinia (Hydropunctaria rheithrophila, Ionaspis chrysophana, I. odora, Verrucaria aquatilis, V. collematodes, V. pseudovirescens), or new to Southern Europe (V. devensis). Specific traits for the freshwater lichen biota of Sardinia were identified and compared to those reported from freshwater sites in the Alps and Carpathian mountains, e.g., a relative scarcity of subgelatinous lichens. Parasitic or epilichenic interactions were found frequently but only in the splash zone and not in the permanently submerged zone, i.e., two parasitic Placopyrenium species, and clearly lichenicolous thalli of Kuettlingeria atroflava and Lobothallia hydrocharis. Due to its specific trait profile and the great potential for the discovery of new species, we recommend the inclusion of Sardinian and further Mediterranean sites in continental-scale monitoring programs for freshwater lichens.

A new species in Megasporaceae, Oxneriaria pakistanica is described and illustrated from Pakistan. A comparative morpho– anatomical study and ITS–based molecular analyses confirmed its position within the recently resurrected genus, Oxneriaria. The taxon has non-zonate thallus, epruinose, distinctly areolate, 0.5–1.8 mm wide areole, grey to whitish grey at upper surface, prothallus absent, 0.1–2 mm in diameter apothecia, taller hymenium 100–155 µm, deeper hypothecium 90–170 µm, broadly ellipsoid to sub-spherical ascospores 10–18 × 7–10 µm size and chemistry unknown substance detected. Its forms a separate branch in the phylogenetic tree and also distinct from the other known taxa of the genus. Oxneriaria pakistanica sp. nov appeared to be a sister specie to Oxneriaria rivulicola. A detailed comparison and a key to all taxa of Oxneriaria is also given.

Three new species Lobothallia elobulata, L. iqbalii, and L. pakistanica from Pakistan are described as new to science and illustrated. Lobothallia elobulata is characterized by the absence of lobes, the presence of a distinct black hypothallus, and small, almost sphaeric ascospores 9–12 × 5–8 μm. Lobothallia iqbalii is characterized by its crustose–placodioid thallus with large appressed apothecia, single on areole, a high hymenium, 100–150 μm tall, and absence of prothallus and secondary metabolites. Lobothallia pakistanica is characterized by its thin, closely adnate, lobate thallus, lecanorine–aspiciloid apothecia, 2–3 on areole, and the absence of secondary metabolites. A comparative morpho-anatomical study and ITS-based molecular analysis confirmed the position of the species within the genus Lobothallia.

a new species in Megasporaceae, Aspiciliella pakistanica is described and illustrated from Pakistan. a comparative morpho-anatomical study and ITS-based molecular analysis confirmed its position within the recently resurrected genus Aspiciliella. Its positioning in a separate branch in the phylogenetic tree also makes it distinct from the other known species of the genus.

A new species in the genus Lobothallia (Megasporaceae, lichenized ascomycetes), from Margalla Hills, Pakistan, is described and illustrated here under the name Lobothallia densipruinosa. It is characterized by contiguous, clustered, densely pruinose dark olive apothecia, conidia 6-10 µm long, and large areoles and lobes. Phylogenetic analysis based on ITS-nrDNA sequencing placed our species relative to L. pruinosa. Descriptions and images of the new species are provided, as well as a key for the 21 species of Lobothallia known to the world. Keywords: Lichenized ascomycetes; Megasporaceae; molecular systematics
