Objectives: This study evaluated the effect of adjacent gingival blood flow on detection of pulpal blood flow (PBF) using ultrasound Doppler flowmetry (UDF) through animal study. Materials and methods: The study included 36 right and left maxillary the third incisors and canines in 9 experimental dogs. The study included 2 main steps: In the first step, the pulse sound level (PSL) was recorded on the cervical part of each tooth without flap elevation (Group 1), with flap elevation (Group 2), and after it was repositioned in place (Group 3). In the second step, the PSL was recorded on the cervical part of each tooth (Group 4), after pulpotomy (Group 5), after partial pulp extirpation (Group 6), after complete extirpation (Group 7), and after canal filling (Group 8). In Groups 5-8, the study was performed with and without flap elevation in the left and right teeth, respectively. The PSL was graded as follows: 0, inaudible; 1, heard faintly; and 2, heard well. The difference between each group was analyzed using Friedman's test with Wilcoxon signed-rank tests (α = 0.05). Results: In step 1, the PSL results were Group 1 > 2 and 3. In step 2, there was no significant difference between the groups when the flap was not elevated, while PSL results were Group 4 > 5 ≥ 6 and 7 ≥ 8 when the flap was elevated. Conclusions: PBF is affected by gingival blood flow when measured with UDF. UDF measurements require isolation of gingiva from the tooth.

Teeth eruption and wearing, especially incisors and canines, are the most practical parameters used in the clinical and physical examination of the animals. This study aimed to evaluate age-related changes in the dentition of domestic dogs in Ahvaz, Iran, to determine a relationship between arrangement of teeth and age of dogs. The present study was conducted on 173 Terrier dogs referred to the Veterinary Hospital of Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz, which had a birth certificate. The animals were divided into 7 age groups of 1: 0-2, 2: 2-8, 3: 8-18, 4: 18-36, 5:36-60, 6:60-120 and 7: more than 120 months. The age estimation was presented based on dental profile and compared with the ancestral age. The crown length of incisors and canines were measured in the left maxillary hemi arch using a digital caliper, followed by imaging. In this study, computer and statistical studies were performed on the dental profile, correlation between crown length and age, as well as teeth wearing rate, and dental morphology. A comparison of crown length of incisors in each group showed that teeth I1, I2, and I3 had the minimum to maximum crown lengths, respectively. The correlation of estimated age with ancestral age in the studied dogs was very significant. This study showed that age assessment using teeth is one of the most important practical and true methods for age estimation in dogs.

Tissue engineering potentially offers new treatments for disorders of the temporomandibular joint which frequently afflict patients. Damage or disease in this area adversely affects masticatory function and speaking, reducing patients' quality of life. Effective treatment options for patients suffering from severe temporomandibular joint disorders are in high demand because surgical options are restricted to removal of damaged tissue or complete replacement of the joint with prosthetics. Tissue engineering approaches for the temporomandibular joint are a promising alternative to the limited clinical treatment options. However, tissue engineering is still a developing field and only in its formative years for the temporomandibular joint. This review outlines the anatomical and physiological characteristics of the temporomandibular joint, clinical management of temporomandibular joint disorder, and current perspectives in the tissue engineering approach for the temporomandibular joint disorder. The tissue engineering perspectives have been categorized according to the primary structures of the temporomandibular joint: the disc, the mandibular condyle, and the glenoid fossa. In each section, contemporary approaches in cellularization, growth factor selection, and scaffold fabrication strategies are reviewed in detail along with their achievements and challenges.

Bone-marrow derived stem cells (BMSCs) can differentiate into several mesenchymal cell lines that are suitable for bone and dental tissue engineering. This study was aimed to assess the efficacy of cell therapy in direct pulp capping (DPC) of canine teeth using autologous BMSCs along with collagen/hydroxyapatite hybrid scaffold in terms of the quantity and quality of calcified bridge formation. The teeth were randomly divided into three groups of DPC with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), hydroxyapatite/collagen hybrid scaffold alone and BMSCs with hydroxyapatite/collagen hybrid scaffold. DPC was performed under general anesthesia in cavities prepared on the buccal surfaces of mandibular and maxillary premolars of the same dogs from which, stem cells had been isolated. All cavities were then restored with light-cure resin modified glass ionomer cement. Histomorphometric assessments after 12 weeks showed formation of dentinal bridge following DPC with BMSCs and MTA. The efficacy of MTA for calcified bridge formation following DPC was significantly higher than that of BMSCs plus hybrid scaffold. According to the present study, we concluded DPC using BMSCs and hybrid scaffold did not provide clinically noticeable results in canine patients.
