The South American vine Araujia hortorum (Apocynaceae) was introduced as an ornamental species in several countries and has since become an invasive weed in many of them. In New Zealand it has been targeted for classical biological control, and this motivated field surveys for fungal pathogens in its native range in Argentina. A disease was frequently encountered in the field causing extensive damage to foliage, as well as stems and fruits. The fungus found in association with the symptoms was identified as Pseudocercospora fumosa. A detailed description of the fungus and the disease is provided. Pathogenicity tests were conducted, and Koch’s postulates fulfilled. Host range tests were conducted on species within the Apocynaceae. Four of these, belonging to the same subtribe as A. hortorum, were found to be susceptible to the disease, while others less related ones were not. Pseudocercospora fumosa was observed to be able to cause severe disease on its host and to be highly specific. It is therefore proposed as a potential biological control agent against A. hortorum in New Zealand.

Three fungi associated with living leaves of plants are new records for Panama: Annellophora phoenicis causing leaf spots of Cocos nucifera (Arecaceae), Cercospora corniculatae (C. apii s. lat.) on living leaves of Oxalis barrelieri (Oxalidaceae) with and without discoloration, and Sclerotium coffeicola on zonate leaf spots of Annona montana (Annonaceae) and Dioscorea alata (Dioscoreaceae). Some records of A. phoenicis and S. coffeicola relevant for known geographical distribution and available by literature are critically revised.

Aak [Calotropis gigantea (L.) R. Br. ex. Ait.] leaf and stem samples infected by leaf spot were collected during August and September 2011 from Lahore Pakistan. Infected leaf and stem surfaces were covered with circular to irregular blackish spots. Conidiophores 15-50 × 4-6 x μm, arising from substomatal stroma in loose fascicles of 8 -15, pale to light golden yellow, simple, sometimes geniculate near tip, 0-3 transversely septate. Conidia solitary, thin and smooth walled, cylindric to cylindro-obclavate, 0-8 septate, obconic base, subobtuse to bluntly rounded tip, 10-130 × 4-6 μm. Morphological characteristics and pathogenecity test confirmed the identification as Passalora calotropidis. However, this is the first report of P. calotropidis on Calotropis gigantea from Pakistan.

U, Urtiaga R 2013 – New species and new records of cercosporoid hyphomycetes from Cuba and Venezuela (Part 2). Mycosphere 4(2), 174–214, Doi 10.5943/mycosphere/4/2/3 Examination of specimens of cercosporoid leaf-spotting hyphomycetes made between 1966 and 1970 in Cuba and Venezuela, now housed at K (previously deposited at IMI as "Cercospora sp."), have been continued. Additionally examined Venezuelan collections, made between 2006 and 2010, are now deposited at HAL. Several species are new to Cuba and Venezuela, some new host plants are included, and the following new species and a new variety are introduced: Cercospororellaamericanae. The new name Pseudocercospora toonae-ciliatae and the new combination Zasmidium hyptiantherae are proposed. Introduction Cercosporoid fungi are anamorphic ascomycetes [Ascomycota, Pezizomycotina, Dothideomycetidae, Capnodiales, Mycosphae-rellaceae (Schoch et al. 2006)] and represent one of the largest and most diverse groups of hyphomycetes, causing a wide range of diseases of wild as well as numerous cultivated plants. The second author of the this paper has collected cercosporoid anamorphs in Cuba and Venezuela since about 1966. Early collections were deposited at IMI as Cercospora sp. (recently completely transferred to K). These specimens have recently been sent on loan to the first author to be determined and for further treatment. Venezuelan collections made bet-ween about 1990 and 2012 (most of them since 2006) have been directly sent to the first author and are now deposited at HAL. First results of examinations of the samples concerned have already been published (Braun & Urtiaga 2008, Braun et al. 2010). The species-rich family Mycosphaerellaceae contains considerable morphological diversity and includes numerous anamorphic genera, many of which are economically important plant pathogens. Recent revisions and phylogenetic research have resulted in taxonomic instability. Ameliorating this problem requires phylogenetic placement of type species of key genera. We present an examination of the type species of the anamorphic Asperisporium and Pantospora. Cultures isolated from recent port interceptions were studied and described, and morphological studies were made of historical and new herbarium specimens. DNA sequence data from the ITS region and nLSU were generated from these type species, analysed phylogenetically, placed into an evolutionary context within Mycosphaerellaceae, and compared to existing phylogenies. Epitype specimens associated with living cultures and DNA sequence data are designated herein. Asperisporium caricae, the type of Asperisporium and cause of a leaf and fruit spot disease of papaya, is closely related to several species of Passalora including P. brachycarpa. The status of Asperisporium as a potential generic synonym of Passalora remains unclear. The monotypic genus Pantospora, typified by the synnematous Pantospora guazumae, is not included in Pseudocercospora sensu stricto or sensu lato. Rather, it represents a distinct lineage in the Mycosphaerellaceae in an unresolved position near Mycosphaerella microsora.
