The subgenus Loxocera (Loxocera Meigen, 1803) (Diptera, Brachycera, Psilidae) in China is reviewed. Six species are recognized, including four new species: L. (L.) chikuni sp. nov., L. (L.) lonsdalei sp. nov., L. (L.) maculithorax sp. nov., and L. (L.) obscura sp. nov. Two species originally placed in the subgenus Loxocera, L. anulata Wang & Yang,...

Background The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture in Saudi Arabia has begun funding some projects to set up some agricultural pest control programs. Therefore, it is very important to enumerate all the predacious or parasitic insects that live on or in other agricultural insect pests and have the potential to become biological control agents against these pests. Results In the present study, nine fly species of potential importance in biological pest control are recorded for the first time from Saudi Arabia, namely, Spogostylum ventrale Bezzi, 1924, Prothaplocnemis anthracina (Becker, 1902) [family Bombyliidae], Alloxytropus anomalus Bezzi, 1925, Scenopinus minusculus (Séguy, 1934) [family Scenopinidae], Actorthia frontata Kröber, 1912, Hoplosathe brevistyla Lyneborg & Zaitzev, 1980 [family Therevidae], Hilara sp. [family Empididae], Tomosvaryella demeyeri Kuznetzov, 1993 [family Pipunculidae] and Orchisia costata (Meigen, 1826) [family Muscidae]. In addition, this is the first time to record the four genera Prothaplocnemis Bezzi, Alloxytropus Bezzi, Hilara Meigen and Orchisia Rondani from Saudi Arabia. World and local distributions, diagnoses, feeding behaviors and some colored photographs of recorded species are provided. Conclusion In the present study, nine species of predacious and parasitic flies belonging to nine genera and six families are recorded for the first time in Saudi Arabia.

... nov. seems to have the costal vein incomplete ending near the vein M3 (Fig. 2D), a trait usually seen in the extant subfamily Phycusinae (Hauser and Irwin, 2005;Hauser et al., 2017). This could be an artifact, however, and the costal vein might not have been preserved past this point. ...
... Furthermore, other characters seen in the new species diverge from Phycusine. For instance, the cell m3 is open, a trait not seen in any known extant representatives of the subfamily, but present on some higher Therevidae, such as Therevinae and Agapophytine (Hauser and Irwin, 2005;Winterton et al., 2016;Hauser et al., 2017). Additionally, there are no visible setae at R1, a character considered apomorphic for Therevinae þ Agapophytine (Winterton and Ware, 2015). ...

A new extinct genus of the Diptera family Therevidae is described from the Lower Cretaceous Crato Formation of Northeastern Brazil. Cretothereva antiqua gen. et sp. nov. is the oldest known fossil of the family Therevidae and the entire therevoid clade. The new taxon cannot be classified in any existing subfamily, and probably correspond to a stem lineage of the Therevidae. The new finding presented herein brings light on the minimum age of therevoids, and falsifies current biogeographical hypotheses standing for a North American origin of the family Therevidae.
... The mouthparts of Cascomixticus would appear to be adapted for both piercing and sucking although there is no way of knowing if the sharply pointed labrum could have been used to impale small invertebrate prey, thus the function of this structure remains unknown. The tubular hypopharynx of Cascomixticus could have been used to imbibe water, plant nectar and exudates from flowers, like the habits of adult therevids (Winterton et al., 2001;Hauser et al., 2017). Even if the nectar had dried, Cascomixticus could have released secretions from the long salivary duct within the hypopharynx to moisten the nectar before consuming it (Brown et al., 2009). ...

A new genus and species of apsilocephalid flies, Cascomixticus tubuliferous gen. et sp. nov. (Diptera: Asiloidea: Apsilocephalidae) is described from Burmese amber. Assignment to the Apsilocephalidae is based on the wing venation that is very similar to extant members of the family. The present fossil differs from known genera of this family by a long labellum bearing tactochemical papillae, a long tubular hypopharynx and a pointed labrum as well as the structure of the scape and pedicel. The long, tubular hypopharynx may have been used to obtain nectar from angiosperm flowers, however the function of the sharp-tipped labrum is unknown.

Two new endemic genera of Therevinae are described from Madagascar. Rinhatiana gen. nov. contains three new species (R. arctifestuca gen. et sp. nov., R. cracentis gen. et sp. nov. and R. latifestuca gen. et sp. nov.) as well as R. distincta (Lyneborg, 1976) comb. nov., which is transferred from Stenopomyia Lyneborg, 1976. Tianarinha gen. nov. is described containing two new species, T. goodmani gen. et sp. nov. and T. micet gen. et sp. nov. All species are diagnosed and figured along with distribution data.

An extinct genus and species of Diptera – Cretothereva antiqua – has recently been described from the Lower Cretaceous of Brazil (Crato Formation). The fossil has been assigned to the family Therevidae and, according to its authors, would represent the oldest known member of the family of the entire Therevoid clade, with important implications for the evolutionary history of the group. A recent paper written by several Diptera experts challenges the systematic position of Cretothereva antiqua, but without a detailed assessment of the evidences. The evidence for the systematic position of this important fossil is reassessed. We argue that criticism of scientific hypotheses must be based on formal discussion of evidence, not based only on conjecture.

The faunistic knowledge of the Diptera of Morocco recorded from 1787 to 2021 is summarized and updated in this first catalogue of Moroccan Diptera species. A total of 3057 species, classified into 948 genera and 93 families (21 Nematocera and 72 Brachycera), are listed. Taxa (superfamily, family, genus and species) have been updated according to current interpretations, based on reviews in the literature, the expertise of authors and contributors, and recently conducted fieldwork. Data to compile this catalogue were primarily gathered from the literature. In total, 1225 references were consulted and some information was also obtained from online databases. Each family was reviewed and the checklist updated by the respective taxon expert(s), including the number of species that can be expected for that family in Morocco. For each valid species, synonyms known to have been used for published records from Morocco are listed under the currently accepted name. Where available, distribution within Morocco is also included. One new combination is proposed: Assuania melanoleuca (Séguy, 1941), comb. nov. (Chloropidae)

the Chinese stiletto fly fauna is poorly known, with few species previously described and no endemic genera. A new genus and species of charismatic stiletto fly is described from northern China. Although the species was previously known from a poorly preserved specimen, the true form of this apparent bumble bee-mimic was not known until images of a live individual were discovered amongst photographs posted on iNaturalist, an online citizen scientist and biodiversity social network.
