The genus Gnopharmia Staudinger, 1892 is revised, based on more than 2000 specimens from the entire area of distribution and study of type material of all described taxa, as far asmap available. Seven species and three subspecies are confirmed as valid for the genus. All important morphological characters have been studied and compared, including m...

We have for the first time performed DNA barcoding of the Nothybidae family (Diptera). DNA barcoding may be successfully used to distinguish Nothybidae species. At present time, the intraspecies allopatric differentiation processes go on in the family and may potentially lead to the new species formation. This can be confirmed by the differences in...

The genus Apteromantis Werner, 1931 comprises two species of wingless mantids, the Iberian A. aptera (Fuente, 1894) and the North African A. bolivari (Werner, 1929). Although A. aptera and A. bolivari have been traditionally considered as separate and valid species, their external appearance is quite similar and no comprehensive taxonomic study has...

The growth of DNA barcode libraries has now revealed many cases of potentially cryptic diversity in various groups of generally well-studied European Lepidoptera. In this paper, we revise a complex of cryptic species, which were formerly all classified as one species, Nemophora degeerella (Linnaeus, 1758). We found that this complex consists of thr...

Ennominae is an important group in the Geometridae family that contains problematic species with very similar external morphological characters. In this study, Ennominae species collected from Yüksekova Dağlıca town of Hakkari Province between April and September 2017 were evaluated from a faunistic and taxonomic perspective. 28 species were identified in the study. Charissa onustaria, C. subtaurica and Crocallis tusciaria species were identified for the first time from Hakkari Province. C. loebeli, Neognopharmia cataleucaria, and Ramitia kufrana were detected in the region are also important endemic taxa for the Turkish fauna. Rhoptria mardinata and Eumera hoferi, known only in Türkiye and Iran, are other rare species found in the region. R. mardinata was presented with photographs of male genitalia for the first time. Morphological and taxonomic aspects of the species under the genera Dicrognophos, Gnopharmia, Crocallis, Bellachima, Charissa, Synopsia and Nychiodes are discussed.

This paper is a part of a long-term study on the Noctuidae fauna of Kerman province. Here we report the newly identified species, which were collected mostly in the South of this province during the years 2015 and 2016. Totally, here we report 30 Noctuidae taxa from 13 genera and six subfamilies namely: Acronictinae (five taxa), Amphipyrinae (three taxa), Heliothinae (two taxa), Condicinae (two taxa), Bryophilinae (six taxa) and Noctuinae (12 taxa). Among these reports there are 12 new provincial records from Kerman. Amphipyra kitti Gaal-Haszler, Lödl, Ronkay, Ronkay & Varga, is recorded here as a new species for the fauna of Iran. Material examined is listed together with provincial distribution for each taxon. Wing pattern and male and female genitalia structures of A. kitti illustrated here. The female genitalia of this species describe here for the first time. According to this data, we concluded that despite the vast area of Kerman province, its fauna has been less explored compared to some of its neighboring provinces. We suggest to explore especially higher altitudes of this province.

... The function of a typical floricomus (Pierce, 1914) is still not satisfactorily clarified. The dense collar of elongated setae surrounding the scoop-shaped setae may support this function by brushing aside or distributing the particles. ...

The genus Prometopidia Hampson, 1902 and its type-species P. conisaria Hampson, 1902 are redescribed and newly discovered morphological characters are explained. The female holotype of Prometopidia arenosa Wiltshire, 1961, was studied and the species redescribed, its correct position in Prometopidia is verified. The new species P. joshimathensis sp. nov. is described from Joshimath area in India, Uttarakhand province. Sympatric with P. conisaria at Joshimath, P. joshimathensis also occurs at Shimla, Punjab province, and in central and eastern Nepal. Morphological and genetic differences found in the specimens of Nepal are considered subspecific, justifying the new taxon P. joshimathensis yazakii ssp. nov. Types and specimens of Prometopidia across its whole range of distribution from Afghanistan to Nepal, habitats, genitalia, remarkable morphological characters and DNA barcoding-results are figured.

This paper is conducted on the Geometridae fauna of Maden district (Elazığ). In total, 87 species were diagnosed in 47 genera of 6 subfamilies. All of the determined species are new record for the research area and also 82 of the species are new record for Elazığ province. And, second location records of endemic Idaea consociata (Staudinger, 1900), Gnophos sacraria (Staudinger, 1895) and Wehrliola inexpectata (Kemal & Uçak, 2018) species are given from the study area.
... The genus Gnopharmia Staudinger, 1892 is a member of the family Geometridae (Geometer moths), which is distributed only in the Middle East, Central Asia and Levant. Before the revision (RAJAEI et al. 2012), 19 taxa (all species and subspecies) of this genus were described by different authors (SCOBLE & HAUSMANN 2007). High intraspecifi c variation in both genitalia and wing pattern led to over 130 years misinterpretation of the species delimitations in this genus. ...

A variety of methods was used: Morphological studies: Light microscopy and scanning electron microscopes were used to study the external and internal anatomy of specimens (including over 900 genitalized species; see RAJAEI et al. 2012). ...

Looking back to the history of taxonomy reveals that thinking of the classifi cation of organisms is an old engagement of human being. However, accumulation of knowledge, invention of new technologies and discovery of many biological facts and new conceptual defi nitions open a new era of taxonomy. Currently, the classical taxonomy undergoes a transformation into an integrative taxonomy, which is a multidisciplinary approach for species delimitation. Thus, integrative taxonomy will be more trustworthy and, if worldwide established, faster in recognizing species and biodiversity. Using the genus Gnopharmia as an example, a geometrid moth that is distributed in the Middle East, Central Asia and Levant, the present survey shows the wealth of information (e.g. taxonomy, species boundaries, zoogeographic distribution and biology) which can be generated with an integrative approach.
... The two widespread and sympatric moth species Gnopharmia colchidaria s.l. and G. kasrunensis (Geometridae) were analyzed for their population structure in a spatial-genetic context. Distribution ranges and the taxonomy of these two species have been recently revised (Rajaei Sh et al. 2012). G. colchidaria s.l. with its three subspecies occurs mainly from southern Iran to the Caucasus in the northwest, and to the Kopet-Dagh, Afghanistan and Pakistan in the east. ...
... G. colchidaria s.l. with its three subspecies occurs mainly from southern Iran to the Caucasus in the northwest, and to the Kopet-Dagh, Afghanistan and Pakistan in the east. Gnopharmia kasrunensis is distributed only in south and west Iran (Rajaei Sh et al. 2012). Due to these characteristics (sympatry, well-known distribution range and taxonomy), we take Gnopharmia moths as candidate organisms for tracing paleo-events in the region of Iran. ...
... Due to these characteristics (sympatry, well-known distribution range and taxonomy), we take Gnopharmia moths as candidate organisms for tracing paleo-events in the region of Iran. As both species are monophagous, successful population foundations depend on the presence of their host plants, Prunus scoparia and P. fenzliana (Rajaei Sh 2010; Rajaei Sh et al. 2012). Depending on this biological interaction, congruent patterns may indicate, but simultaneously cross check, the evidence for shared events during their evolutionary history. ...
