... Callithrix penicillata occurs in seasonal environments of gallery forests, forest patches and savanna ( Cerrado ) in central Brazil ( H ershkovitz , 1977). This species, as in the previous case, is invading and possibly replacing other species in many regions of the east and south, in the states of Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro ( R ylands et al. , 1993; R ocha et al. , 2004). The other four species occur in the Atlantic forest of eastern and southeastern Brazil: C. kuhli and C. geoffroyi inhabit lowlands while C. aurita and C. flaviceps occur in the mountainous rain forests above 400–500m. Typical of the Atlantic forest of Rio de Janeiro, C. aurita also occurs in the east and northeast of São Paulo and in the southern part of Minas Gerais ( C oimbra - F ilho , 1986; B randão & D evelley , 1998). This species is considered vulnerable, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN, 2008), and is also listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES, 2009) and in the Brazilian Institute for the Environment’s list of nationally threatened species (IBAMA, 2003), due to its small population size and ongoing decline. The widespread degradation of the Atlantic forest and the hybridization with invasive species ( C. jacchus and C. penicillata ) are the major threats to C. aurita , although the extent of the latter remains obscure ( R ylands et al. , 2009). C oimbra -F ilho et al. (1993) reported the occurrence of experimental hybridization in captivity among Callithrix species which resulted in fertile individuals with several distinct phenotypes. There is also evidence of natural hybridizations at the distributional limits of the Callithrix species or due to introduction (in the case of C. jacchus and C. penicillata ) ( R ylands et al. , 2000). The present study examines three male Callithrix captured in the wild in Guapimirim municipality, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which were considered possible hybrids between C. aurita and C. jacchus or C. penicillata according to indistinct pelage. Many invasive species take opportunistic advantage of other forms of ecosystem change, such as habitat disturbance, rather than being the direct cause of the decline of native species ( D idham et al ., 2005). For the establishment of conservation management plans to protect the vulnerable species, different causal mechanisms that lead to interspecific breeding must be distinguished. The genetic confirmation of the hybridization is imperative to clarify if there is a directional pattern in the hybridization and also in the survival and reproduction of the hybrids. From the cytogenetic aspect, the Callithrix species represent a homogeneous clade with the exceptions of morphology and size of the Y chromosome, and their Ag-NOR pattern ( N agamachi & F errari , 1984; A rdito et al ., 1987). Based on chromosomal differences already reported for Callithrix species, our objectives were: to analyze the morphology of the Y chromosome of the three possible hybrids, comparing its morphology with that previously observed for C. aurita , C. jacchus and C. penicillata ; to identify the paternal species involved in hybridization; and to examine if the Y chromosome of the individuals studied present secondary constriction similar to that reported for C. jacchus , which would indicate paternity by a male of this species. Three male marmosets considered as possible hybrids between Callithrix aurita and C. jacchus or C. penicillata on the basis of pelage pattern were cytogenetically studied. The individuals were captured in the wild in Guapimirim (22 o 32’14” S, 42 o 58’55” W), in the state of Rio de Janeiro at an altitude of 40 m, in the forest near the Rio de Janeiro Primate Centre (CPRJ/ INEA), Brazil, where these species are kept in captivity. The capture location is part of the Atlantic forest, a highly threatened ecosystem, classified as a global hotspot of biodiversity due to its exceptional concentration of endemic species and the loss of more than 70% of its primary vegetation ( M yers et al. , 2000). Metaphase chromosomes were obtained by using the lymphocyte culture method ( M oorhead et al. , 1960). Blood (2mL) was collected at CPRJ/INEA by femoral puncture in heparinized syringes. Chromosomes were analyzed by conventional staining with 3% Giemsa in phosphate buffer pH 6.8 and examined at a 100x magnification. Nucleolar organizing region (NOR) characterization was performed following H owell & B lack (1980). The karyotypes of the three possible hybrids were compared to those previously described by N agamachi (1995) and N agamachi et al. (1997) (Fig. 1). The karyotypes of the three possible hybrid marmosets showed the same pattern observed in the genus Callithrix . They presented 2n=46, with 14 uni- and 30 bi-armed autosomal pairs, a median submetacentric X and a diminutive uni-armed Y chromosome, similar to that found in C. aurita (Fig. 2). The Ag-NOR staining marked secondary constrictions located in the short arms of six acrocentric autosomes (Fig. 3). Active NOR was not found on the Y chromosome differing from that observed in C. jacchus ( B edard et al. , 1978; N agamachi & F errari , 1984; A rdito et al ., 1987). The five Callitrix species, except C. flaviceps (not studied), present 2n=46, 14 acrocentric and 30 bi-armed autosomes, a median size submetracentric X chromosome, and differ only in the morphology of the Y chromosome (Fig. 1; N agamachi et al. , 1997), which in the case of C. jacchus was variable even between populations. The Y chromosome is subtelocentric in individuals from Bahia and metacentric in those from Pernambuco, probably due to a pericentric inversion ( N agamachi & F errari , 1984). Analysis of the G- and C-banding patterns demonstrated a lack of any chromosomal rearrangements to differentiate their karyotypes ( N agamachi et al. , 1997). Ag-NOR staining marked secondary constrictions of the small arms of the acrocentric chromosomes of all Callithrix species studied. Callithrix jacchus differs from its congeners by being the only species that shows Ag-NOR staining on the Y chromosome ( B edard et al. , 1978; N agamachi & F errari , 1986; A rdito et al ., 1987). The karyotype of the three individuals studied was compatible with that described for the genus. The Y chromosome similar to that of C. aurita and the absence of NOR in this chromosome suggest that the paternal species of the three possible hybrids is C. aurita , and that one of the invaders, C. jacchus or C. penicillata , is the maternal species. Cytogenetic and molecular analyses conducted so far indicate that the Callithrix genus constitute a homogeneous clade with little genetic divergence among the species, which suggests that the speciation in this group is recent ( S chneider , 2000) and that they can still be in a process of speciation ( V eracini et al. , 2002). One piece of evidence of the close phylogenetic relation of the taxa is the fact that all species hybridize at the distributional limits of the various forms ( C. penicillata x C. geoffroyi , C. penicillata x C.kuhlii , C. geoffroyi x C. flaviceps , C. aurita x C. flaviceps ) or due to the introduction of one (or both) forms ( C. jacchus and C. penicillata ) ( C oimbra -F ilho et al. , 1993). In the last case, the occurrence of those species together with C. aurita allied with its population decline can result in interspecific breeding and generation of natural hybrids. Since the only karyotypic difference among the species is represented by the Y chromosome morphology, it does not interfere with synapse during the meiosis, allowing for the production of normal gametes. The great genetic similarity contributes to the viability and fertility of the hybrid descendents observed in captivity ( C oimbra -F ilho , 1978); however, its fitness in the wild in terms of survival and reproductive success has yet to be determined. Although there are few studies on the breeding and social behavior of C. aurita , polygyny was observed as a mating system for one group studied in São Paulo, southeastern Brazil ( C outinho & C orrêa , 1995). Due to the population decline, hybridization can be viewed in the case of the threatened species as an alternative strategy to carry on reproduction. Otherwise, by “hybrid vigor”, the hybrids can represent an additional competitor to the vulnerable species, possibly superior to the invasive species, C. jacchus and C. penicillata , which have already established themselves in the new territory. Biological invasion is now considered to be one of the “big five” environmental issues of public concern ( S ala et al. , 2000), since a significant emphasis has been placed on invasive species as one of the leading causes of species decline and loss of biodiversity ( W ilcove et al. , 1998; V itousek et al ., 1996). The data presented here represents the first attempt to confirm the involvement of C. aurita in interspecific breeding, although further genetic analyses are necessary to identify the other species involved and the magnitude of the involvement. O Centro de Conservação dos Saguis-da-Serra (CCSS), da Universidade Federal de Viçosa, é o primeiro Centro de Primatologia do mundo direcionado exclusivamente para desenvolver atividades, tanto in situ quanto ex situ, em prol da conservação de ambos os saguis-da-serra, Callithrix aurita e Callithrix flaviceps. Essas duas espécies encontram todo um aparato legal consolidado pelo ICMBio, um órgão federal que cria as políticas públicas de proteção às nossas espécies, através da elaboração do Plano de Ação Nacional para a Conservação dos Primatas da Mata Atlântica e da Preguiça-de-coleira (PAN PPMA). O CCSS-UFV conta também com o auxílio direto de pós-doutorandos, doutorandos, mestrandos, bolsistas de iniciação científica, além de estagiários voluntários de diversos cursos. As estratégias adotadas no manejo desses primatas baseiam-se em técnicas de ambientação de recintos, dinâmica social, considerações sobre a dieta e enriquecimento ambiental, pautadas nas melhores práticas de manejo e no bem-estar animal. O resultado de todo esse empenho, fruto de muitas parcerias, é refletido por meio do desenvolvimento, reprodução, aumento da população e bom desempenho dos saguis-da-serra no CCSS-UFV, que hoje mantém treze animais.

The native marmoset of the Southeastern Atlantic Forest in Brazil is among the 25 most endangered primates of the world. Hybridization with alien species is one of its main threats registered since the early 2000s based on phenotype, so far, without genetic confirmation. Using uniparental molecular markers, we analyzed 18 putative hybrids, captured from 2004 to 2013 in different localities of the Atlantic Forest. A nine base pair deletion in the SRY gene of C. aurita was used to investigate paternal ancestry. Maternal ancestry was assessed by DNA sequencing of ca. 455 bp from the COX2 gene. Hybridization was confirmed for 16 out of the 18 marmosets since they inherited COX2 haplotypes of the alien C. penicillata or C. jacchus and the SRY deletion specific to C. aurita. Two individuals inherited both parental lineages of C. aurita, which is probably related to backcrossing or hybrid interbreeding. The direction of hybridization of females with the matrilineal lineage of invasive species with males descending from the native lineage was predominant in our sampling. This is the first time that hybridization between C. aurita and invasive species has been confirmed through genetic analysis.

Callithrix aurita, endemic to the Atlantic Forest, is one of the most endangered primates in the world, due to habitat fragmentation, deforestation, hybridization and competition with other species of the genus. Through new records of the species and its congeners in the Zona da Mata, Minas Gerais, we can contribute to the conservation of C. aurita, informing about the expansion of invasive marmosets and hybridization in its area of occurrence. In fragments inspected through active search and with use of playback, between 2017 and 2021, a total of 137 groups of marmosets were identified in 18 municipalities, among which 13 were groups of C. aurita, four of C. penicillata and 110 groups of hybrid forms. The sampled points alert to the need to define priority areas for the conservation of C. aurita, in addition to the urgency of its management and of its allochthonous species and hybrid forms, preventing the continuity of hybridization and consequent extinction of the species

The trade of non-native pets, especially of non-domesticated and exotic animals, and their subsequent release and establishment of populations is one of the major pathways of introduction for invasive alien reptiles, amphibia, birds and mammals. Here, we use a group of arboreal mammals, tree squirrels of the genus Callosciurus, as a well-documented case study, reviewing the pathways of introduction, the current areas of non-native distribution, the rate of establishment success and the challenge and legal importance of species identification. We further illustrate the importance of early detection and effective monitoring methods and plans. Next, we document how they interfere with native species, their risk of acting as vectors for emerging infectious diseases and their potential role in maintaining parasitic infections that can affect human health. We conclude by reviewing the current management, or the lack of it, and highlight the diverse biological, social, political and economic reasons that make control/eradication of these charismatic species difficult or even impractical in most countries. However, reviewing the only two successful eradications of the IAS, we highlight the need to acknowledge the public opinion and the importance of communication, transparency and the engagement of a diversity of stakeholders to create a consensus about the actions to undertake.

A major outbreak of yellow fever (YF) occurred in Brazil during 2016–2018. Epizootics in New World nonhuman primates are sentinel events for YF virus circulation. However, genus-specific susceptibilities and suitability for YF surveillance remain poorly understood. We obtained and compared epidemiologic, histopathologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular results from 93 human and 1,752 primate cases submitted during the recent YF outbreak in Brazil (2017), with the support of the Brazilian National YF Surveillance Program. We detected heterogeneous YF-associated profiles among the various genera of primates we analyzed. Alouatta primates were the most reliable sentinel; Sapajus and Callicebus primates had higher viral loads but lower proportional mortality rates. Callithrix primates were the least sensitive, showing lower viral loads, lower proportional mortality rates, and no demonstrable YF virus antigen or extensive lesions in liver, despite detectable viral RNA. These differences in susceptibility, viral load, and mortality rates should be considered in strategic surveillance of epizootics and control measures for YF.

The pet trade is one of the most important pathways by which small mammals are introduced to non-native areas. To prevent the introduction and invasion of non-native pets, an impact assessment protocol is useful in understanding which pets might have potential negative impacts should they escape or be released from captivity. In this study, we used the Generic Impact Scoring System (GISS) to assess the potential effects associated with 24 non-native small mammal species sold in the South African pet trade. European rabbits Oryctolagus cuniculus , house mice Mus musculus , Norwegian rats Rattus norvegicus and eastern grey squirrels Sciurus carolinensis had the highest potential impacts for both socio-economic and environmental categories. We found no statistically significant difference between the overall environmental and socio-economic impact scores. Impacts on agricultural and animal production (livestock) were the main mechanisms in the socio-economic category, while the impacts on animals (predation), competition and hybridisation prevailed for environmental impacts. The non-native mammal pet species with high impacts should be strictly regulated to prevent the potential impacts and establishment of feral populations in South Africa.
