The geographical and ecological distribution of some species of Eilema occurring in Italy is revised and updated. Eilema depressa and E. pseudocomplana were found to be much commoner than literature records were suggesting, the former with several coastal populations discovered along the Tyrrhenian coast and in Sardinia, the latter having been prob...

With nearly 80 valid species, the genus Thermocyclops Kiefer, 1927 is one of the most speciose members of the family Cyclopidae. Although its centre of diversity is in the Sub-Saharan Africa, different species can be found in almost any non-glaciated part of the world. Six of them have been recorded so far from Thailand, all from lacustrine environ...

Lesser Antillean anoles provide classic examples of island radiations. A detailed knowledge of their phylogeny and biogeography, in particular how the age of species relate to the ages of their respective islands and the age of their radiation, is essential to elucidate the tempo and mechanisms of these radiations. We conduct a large-scale phylogen...

Sympatric divergent populations of the same species provide an opportunity to study the evolution and maintenance of reproductive isolation. Male mating calls are important in sexual selection in acoustically communicating species, and they also have the potential to maintain isolation among species or incipient species. We studied divergent south...

We conducted a molecular assessment of Colostethus-like frogs along an elevational gradient in the Serranía de Pirre, above Santa Cruz de Cana, eastern Panama, aiming to establish their species identity and to determine the altitudinal distribution of C. latinasus. Our findings confirm the view of C. latinasus as an endemic species restricted to th...

The species of Eilema Hübner, [1819] sensu lato, present in Europe and North Africa, are studied on the basis of morphological characteristics and molecular genetics. Images of adults, genitalia of both sexes, immature stages, as well as phylogenetic trees obtained from the combined analysis of three different genetic markers are presented. Data on life cycles, food plants, and geographic distribution are also included. The morphological differences observed within Eilema sensu lato have led the authors to create the genera Indalia gen. nov. and Pseudokatha gen. nov. New combinations are stablished: Manulea iberica (Mentzer, 1980) st. rest., comb. nov.; Indalia marcida (Mann, 1859) comb. nov.; Indalia predotae (Schawerda, 1927) comb. nov.; Indalia albicosta (Rogenhofer, 1894) comb. nov.; Indalia interposita (Rothschild, 1914) comb. nov.; Indalia uniola (Rambur, [1866]) comb. nov.; Indalia lutarella (Linnaeus, 1758) comb. nov.; Indalia pygmaeola (Doubleday, 1847) comb. nov.; Pseudokatha rungsi (Toulgoët, 1960) comb. nov., and Eilema albicosta witti Kobes, 1993 syn. nov.
... Although in Malta the actual larval host plants for none of the Lithosiinae species have been established, it is not impossible that such lichens form the diet of the larvae of Eilema species. Grassi & Zilli (2005) confi rmed its species level status on the base of exa mination of male and female genitalia. This opinion is also followed by later authors (Gastón, Macià & Ylla 2007;Leraut 2006). ...
... The colouration of moths from the s.g. is also signifi cantly paler and more homogenous with usually much less distinct dark suffusion of outer portion of hind wing especially in the males. The occurrence of two generations is also reported from Italy (Parenzan 1982) where, in contrast to Malta, "in the more southern districts" the species shows "two largely overlapping generations in early summer and late summer-early autumn" (Grassi & Zilli 2005). During the study 11 specimens (4P, 7O), belonging to the fi rst (2P, 4O) and the second (2P, 3O) generation were dissected. ...
... The remaining two retain the position and shape typical for the species (Fig. 1). This feature was, without any details, already noted by Grassi & Zilli (2005), although it was never illustrated. ...

Eilema marcida (Mann, 1859) is recorded for the fi rst time from Malta. Specimens belonging to this taxon were originally determined as Eilema pygmaeola Doubleday which does not belong to the lepi-dopterofauna of Malta. Some biological and faunistic data on E. marcida and Eilema caniola are provided. Information on all the three species of Maltese Lithosiinae is summarized.
... Identification of specimens, particularly those preserved in ethanol inasmuch as collected with Malaise and pitfall traps, largely relied on the examination of their genitalia. Dissections were done after the procedure outlined in Grassi & Zilli (2005) and genital pieces mounted either in permanent slides with Euparal or stored in microvials with glycerol which were associated to the original specimens. recordS. ...

During the inventoring and monitoring programmes on biodiversity carried out in the Marganai mountains and surrounding areas (southern Sardinia) by Centro Nazionale per lo Studio e la Conservazione della Biodiversità Forestale "Bosco Fontana" of Verona in 2003–2006, a total of 155 species of Macrolepidoptera Heterocera, representative of nine families, were collected with a variety of sampling methods. These species are briefl y accounted on here, with remarks on the most noteworthy taxa from the faunistic, biogeographical and systematic standpoints. The survey led to the discovery of the noctuid Phytometra sanctifl orentis (Boisduval, 1834) (= luna Zerny, 1927), so far known only from the Iberian Peninsula, which is thus a species new to both Sardinia and Italy as a whole.
... In diffi cult cases the specimens were dissected and genitalia preparations were made according to the standard methods used for Lepidoptera (cf. Grassi & Zilli 2005). ...

An account of the 342 Lepidoptera species so far recorded from the Vesuvius National Park (Italy, Campania, Naples province) and surroundings is given. The fauna of the Park has so far proved fairly varied as a consequence of the complex environmental mosaic occurring in the area, but it is not particularly rich and is overall dominated by ecologically versatile common elements, often thermophilous ones with vagrant tendencies. Reasons for the comparatively low species richness are to be found both in the harsh conditions occurring on the volcano and in the impoverishment of the environment due to human activities. Among the Macrolepidoptera, fi ve species are newly recorded from Campania: Eupithecia pyreneata, E. gemellata (Geometridae), Cryphia ochsi, Metachrostis velox and Oligia strigilis (Noctuidae). The pyralid Nephopterix angustella is recorded for the fi rst time in peninsular Italy.

Conistra iana sp. n. is described from Sicily. The new species is characterised by an unusual intermingling of characters deemed to be diagnostic for C. vaccinii (Linnaeus, 1761) and C. ligula (Esper, 1791), and shows also some exclusive features. An overall survey of closest congeners revealed that all checked females of "C. ligula" from the south- east Mediterranean are devoid of signum and sparse "C. alicia" from southern Spain and Morocco show markedly dilated postero-lateral processes of antrum, both findings calling for further research on these nominal taxa inasmuch additional entities might be hidden. Orrhodia vaccinii nigra A. Bang-Haas, 1907 is shown to be a senior synonym for Conistra (Orrhodia) alicia Lajonquière, 1939 syn. n. and declared as nomen oblitum in favour of the younger name as nomen protectum.

We present a genome assembly from an individual male Eilema depressum (the Buff Footman; Arthropoda; Insecta; Lepidoptera; Erebidae). The genome sequence is 622.0 megabases in span. Most of the assembly is scaffolded into 30 chromosomal pseudomolecules, including the Z sex chromosome. The mitochondrial genome has also been assembled and is 15.46 kilobases in length. Gene annotation of this assembly on Ensembl identified 20,038 protein coding genes.
