... We, humans, must be inspired by the generosity of nature and the coexistence of species and habitats that these natural areas offer. Along with the data discussed above on the species density of mosses and vascular plants, let us bring another example from the microscopic world; in a periphyton sample or a few drops of the related cleaned material from the Ohrid Lakeshore in Tushemishti (Pogradeci) more than 150 species of diatoms were found, including species new to science [28,29]. ...

There are many important protected areas in the Western Balkan region, which are shared between Albania, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Greece. These areas have special importance based on their species density (mosses and higher plants) per surface unit. These transboundary ecosystems, which include mountainous massifs, lakes, and rivers, are biodiversity hotspots for the whole of Europe. Species and habitat densities are high compared to other countries in Southeast Europe. However, political borders fragment properly across two or three countries, which often have different approaches and rules for nature protection and the use of resources. Hence, in this short opinion piece, we stress common and cooperative transboundary protection and management in these countries. Furthermore, the European Union’s policy towards the Western Balkan countries in the Stabilization and Association Process (SAP), with the goal of their eventual EU membership, is crucial. Therefore, our appeal is addressed not only to the respective local communities and national governments but also to the European Commission and related EU institutions. We stress the importance of these cross-border ecosystems in the integration process.

... A specimen depicted from Lake Hövsgöl in Mongolia (designated as N. platystoma, Edlund et al. 2001) shows resemblance to P. lizae although it somewhat differs from the latter in terms of linear shape. The Albanian specimen of N. platystoma (Miho & Lange-Bertalot 2006), which shows close similarity to P. pantocsekii, is somewhat different in having a more elliptic shape and more narrowly rounded apices. Whether these specimens belong to distinct taxa or represent only unusual valves of established taxa, will be determined through future morphological observations of Petroplacus representatives from ancient lakes. ...

This paper addresses the taxonomy and biogeography of the recently described diatom genus Petroplacus Pomazkina, Rodionova, Sherbakova & D.M. Williams and relates new information regarding the occurrence of Navicula platystoma var. pantocsekii Wislouch & Kolbe in deep-water benthos of the Rybinsk reservoir, the Upper Volga Region. The variety clearly differs from already established Petroplacus species in valve shape, thus it was transferred to this genus at the specific rank, Petroplacus pantocsekii comb. & stat. nov.

Research on microscopic algae (phytoplankton or periphyton) of Albanian waters started only last three decades, focused either on taxonomy and ecology, such us biodiversity, primary productivity, trophy and bioquality. Up to 1300 taxa of microscopic algae have been identified, most of them diatoms (siliceous algae). Some new or rare species have been mentioned here. More than 800 taxa were already known in different coastal habitats (lagoons). Algal blooms and toxic species were of interest, too. Based in periphyton (diatom) community, it seems that the most part of wetland habitats are of ‘good’ or ‘very good quality’, where the upper mountainous parts are distinguished. Nevertheless, the rivers in Western Adriatic Lowland, such as Tirana, Lana and Ishmi, and Gjanica (Fieri), were classified of ‘bad’ and/or ‘poor’ quality. The water trophy of coastal lagoons and littoral parts of Ohrid lake (Pogradeci) and Shkodra lake (Buna) were considered relatively high (mesotrophic to hypertrophic). The phytoplankton in Butrinti showed a seasonal dynamics, mostly irregular; but the life can be disturbed by the blooms of toxic species (Pseudo-nitzschia or dinoflagellates). First report in Albanian fresh waters of the bloom of cyanobacterium Aphanizomenon flos-aquae in Fierza, Kukesi, in July 2014, is also mentioned here. The treatment of wastewaters in big urban centers, at least in Tirana, Durresi and Fieri and implementing by the Albanian Government of the already elaborated Environmental Monitoring Scheme (through StEMA & CEMSA EU projects) are strongly recommended. It would help to know better and in time the water quality, and help to protect and improve, fulfilling the required national and international standards.
... Morphological frustule features (e.g., valve outline, shape of polar raphe ends, striae and foramina morphology) and chloroplasts morphology separate the genus from other naviculoid diatoms (Round et al. 1990, Cox 2003. Several Placoneis taxa are known from brackish and freshwaters worldwide ( Van Landingham 1975, 1978 but description of many new species suggests that the overall species diversity is much higher (Lange-Bertalot & Metzeltin 1998, Metzeltin et al. 2005, Miho & Lange-Bertalot 2006, Levkov et al. 2007, Metzeltin et al. 2009, Kociolek & Thomas 2010, Levkov & Williams 2011, Kulikovskiy et al. 2012) and still largely unexplored. Another problem concerns differences between current and original taxonomic concepts of a number of species regarded as common (Jahn 2004). ...

Navicula clementis Grunow is presented by micrographs from Neogene fossil deposits of the type location Dúbravica. At least three extant populations have barely more in common with Grunow’s taxon than the remarkable two unilaterally situated stigmoids at the central nodule. Due to considerable differences in valve outlines and dimensions, stria position and areola density various recent populations should no longer be interpreted as conspecifi c with N. clementis. Consequently Placoneis clementispronina, P. nanoclementis and P. parvapolonica are described here as taxonomically new to science. All three are (moderately) frequent in the Holarctic realm, abundant in places, whereas P. clementis s. str. is farreaching missing or maybe even extinct. Paraplaconeis cracoviensis sp. nov. is an infrequent taxon in Central Europe, found as yet in Poland and Germany. It is morphologically closely related to the epitypifi ed lectotypus of Pinnularia placentula Ehrenberg. That interpretation conforms to Placoneis placen tu la (Ehrenberg) Mereschkowsky, syn. Paraplaconeis placentula (Ehrenberg) Kulikovskiy & Lange-Bertalot. All the taxa presented here are discussed, documented by light (LM) and scanning (SEM) micrographs, and the brief annotations on their morphology, taxonomy, distribution and ecology are provided.

In this article, the history and taxonomy of Placoneis gastrum, the type species of the genus Placoneis, was discussed. We investigated the structure of pore occlusions in Placoneis and related genera. As a result, we propose a new classification for tectulum-like types of pore occlusions. The new classification is congruent with previously-published and newly-constructed phylogenies based on molecular data. Based on the different structures of the pore occlusions, species of Placoneis are transferred to Witkowskia gen. nov. Hence, 168 new combinations are introduced. A new diatom species, with a similar morphology to Placoneis flabellata, was discovered in Bắc Kạn Province, Vietnam. It is described in this article as Chudaevia densistriata sp. nov. Placoneis flabellata is transferred to Chudaevia gen. nov. We also illustrate Placoneis flabellata herein and compare it to Chudaevia densistriata sp. nov. An unknown diatom, similar to Placoneis coloradensis, was discovered in Chukotka, Russia. It is introduced as Placoneis elinae sp. nov. below. Additionally, we discuss the distribution of some species of Witkowskia gen. nov. and Chudaevia gen. nov.

A new diatom species of the genus Placoneis Mereschkowsky is described on the basis of molecular and morphological data. The new species, Placoneis asymmetricus Glushchenko, Kezlya, Kulikovskiy & Kociolek, sp. nov., is morphologically characterized by slightly asymmetrical valves along the apical axis based on light and scanning electron microscopy of the exterior and interior of valves. Molecular data, which are derived from live cells, are used for phylogenetic reconstruction based on 18S V4 rDNA and rbcL gene markers of taxa from the genus Placoneis and other diatoms in the order Cymbellales D.G.Mann. Comparisons with other morphologically and molecularly closely-related species are given.

Using genetic markers 18S V4 rDNA and rbcL and morphological investigation of the diatom genus Placoneis, we described three new species. The new species, Placoneis baikaloelginensis sp. nov., Placoneis subundulata sp. nov., Placoneis neohambergii sp. nov. were isolated from Russia (Lake Baikal) and Vietnam (waterbodies of Cát Tiên National Park (Đồng Nai Province) and Khánh Hòa Province). We examine relationships within the Cymbellales and show that the genera Placoneis, Paraplaconeis and Geissleria are phylogenetically independent. We discuss the importance of careful identification of strains used for phylogenetic analysis and we show the history of identification of several different Placoneis elginensis strains. After careful identification of Placoneis elginensis vouchers, we found that we have a few independent species. The question of cryptic or pseudocryptic species in this context is discussed.
