This is exploratory research into consumer behaviour in selecting cell phones. During the last decade, there has been an exponential growth in the cell phone usage in India. Today the young Indian population feels that a cell phone is part and parcel of their lifestyle and without a cell phone they’re disconnected from the world and their friends and family. This study examines college students’ cell phone usage from a behavioral and psychological perspective. Utilizing both qualitative (focus groups) and quantitative (survey) approaches and the study suggests these individuals use the devices for a variety of purposes: to manage their time efficiently, to stay connected with friends and family members and to obtain needed information (in the case of smart phones). While users are aware of potential misuse of the cell phone and the addictive nature of cell-phones, the benefits definitely outweigh the risks. The degree to which the individuals are dependent on the cell phones and what they view as the negatives of their utilization are also examined. The findings suggest people have various feelings and attitudes toward cell phone usage. This study serves as a foundation on which future studies will be built in Indian perspective.
